Short answer: ID Handbook of European Birds is a two-volume visual reference for solving difficult plumage identifications, not a pocket field guide. The set’s annotated photographs, multiple plumages and side-by-side structural comparisons make it especially useful at home or at a birding base. It does not cover calls, behavior or the overall impression of a bird, so most birders will use it alongside a conventional field guide rather than instead of one.
This article examines the American Birding Association’s May 18, 2025 review by Julian Hough and Rebecca Minardi. Their review concerns the 2024 Princeton University Press set by Nils Van Duivendijk and Marc Guyt; it is not a standalone book titled A Photo Guide to The Birds of Europe.

What the reviewed photo guide actually is
The featured publication is ID Handbook of European Birds, a pair of large hardcover handbooks. Volume 1 covers non-passerines and Volume 2 covers passerines. Together, the American Birding Association review reports 1,056 pages and 720 species, including regular vagrants recorded in Europe. The authors concentrate on Europe itself, not the entire Western Palearctic.
That distinction matters. A title that sounds like a general European field guide can imply a small, all-purpose book for carrying on a walk. The review describes something different: a detailed identification reference designed for study before or after a day outside. Each volume is approximately eight by six inches. The reviewer’s warning is memorable: “To be clear, these are not ‘field guides’ in the traditional sense; these hardcover books at eight by six inches won’t fit in any of your pockets, even if you wanted to take them out for a spin.”

Photographs replace the paintings used in many traditional guides. Images are selected to show useful identification marks and are annotated with callouts that tell you where to look. The pages also bring together different plumages and close visual comparisons, including family-level treatments of head and tail patterns and wing formations. That approach is most valuable when the problem is not recognizing a bird family, but separating similar species or age and seasonal plumages.
Contents and specifications at a glance
| Characteristic | ID Handbook of European Birds |
|---|---|
| Publication examined | 2024 Princeton University Press two-volume hardcover set |
| Authors | Nils Van Duivendijk and Marc Guyt |
| Volume 1 | Non-passerines |
| Volume 2 | Passerines |
| Species coverage | 720 species, including regular European vagrants, according to the ABA review |
| Combined page count | 1,056 pages in the review’s descriptive text; a separate listing in the same review says 1,048 pages |
| Geographic scope | Europe; not a guide to the broader Western Palearctic |
| Format | Large hardcovers, approximately 8 × 6 inches |
| Images | Photographs with identification callouts, multiple plumages and comparative layouts |
| Explicitly covered | Visual field marks, plumage variation and structural comparisons |
| Not covered as a core system | Vocalizations, behavior and general impression |
The conflicting page totals should not be silently combined. If a retailer, library record or product card needs an exact figure, check the publisher’s record and the particular edition. The review itself supports both numbers in different contexts, so 1,056 pages is the best description of the set in the review’s main account, while 1,048 pages remains a reported listing figure.
How the photographic identification system works
Callouts turn photographs into study diagrams
A normal photograph can show what a bird looks like without telling you which details matter. In these handbooks, arrows and labels direct attention to the diagnostic areas. That helps a learner build a repeatable inspection routine: look at the head pattern, examine the wing arrangement, check the tail, then compare the rest of the plumage. The value is not simply that the pictures are attractive; it is that the page is organized around decisions an identifier has to make.

Several plumages are shown together
European birds can change substantially between sexes, ages, seasons and stages of molt. A single adult breeding photograph is a poor match for a juvenile, winter bird or transitional individual. The review highlights multiple plumages and detailed visual comparisons, allowing you to compare those states on the page instead of relying on memory or flipping among unrelated entries.
Family-level comparison pages address structure
The review specifically notes comparisons of head and tail patterns and wing formations. Such spreads are useful when several species share a color or habitat but differ in proportions, feather pattern or the shape of a wing in flight. They encourage comparison of structure rather than a hunt for one bright patch.
Where the set is strongest
- Resolving hard visual identifications: annotated images and comparative layouts give you a way to test small differences that are easy to miss in a quick field glance.
- Learning plumage variation: multiple appearances help connect age and seasonal variation to the same species account.
- Preparing for a trip: the large pages are suited to deliberate study of the birds expected in a region before you leave.
- Checking an observation afterward: when a field note or photograph leaves a bird uncertain, the handbooks provide a detailed visual reference at a desk.
- Building identification skills: callouts model which marks experienced observers inspect first.
The format also reduces a common field-guide compromise. A pocket guide has to fit in a jacket and remain quick to scan; these books can devote more space to larger photographs and comparisons. That extra room is the reason to own them, provided you have somewhere to use them.

What it does not provide—and why that changes the buying decision
The ABA review says the handbooks do not cover vocalizations, general impression or behavior. Those are not minor extras. A call may identify a hidden bird before you see it; behavior can separate similar species; and overall shape, flight style, posture and habitat often narrow the possibilities before a close plumage comparison is possible.
Because those inputs are absent, the set is not a complete identification system on its own. A birder who hears an unfamiliar song, sees a silhouette in poor light or has only a fleeting flight view still needs another source or field experience. The handbooks answer the question, “Which visual marks distinguish these candidates?” They do not answer every question that arises during an encounter.
This limitation is also a useful way to position the books. Use a conventional field guide for rapid decisions outdoors, and use ID Handbook of European Birds to investigate difficult visual cases, learn variation and review what you saw. The two formats solve different problems rather than competing for exactly the same job.

Reference set or field companion?
| Your situation | How well the set fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You study European birds at home or at a base camp | Excellent | Large hardcovers provide room for annotated photographs and comparison pages. |
| You need one book in a jacket pocket | Poor | The approximately 8 × 6-inch hardcovers are not pocket-sized, and there are two volumes. |
| You regularly identify birds by song | Limited | Vocalizations are not covered. |
| You work through difficult plumage or age problems | Strong | Multiple plumages and visual callouts focus on fine field marks. |
| You want coverage beyond Europe | Limited | The set focuses on Europe rather than the broader Western Palearctic. |
| You want an all-in-one guide for quick field decisions | Incomplete | Behavior and general impression are outside its stated coverage, and the physical format favors reference use. |
How it compares with other European bird books
The right comparison depends on four practical axes: portability, geographic scope, depth of plumage and species coverage, and treatment of calls, behavior and general impression. The following books occupy different points on that map; none is a like-for-like replacement for every use.
| Book | Format and scope | Reported content | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ID Handbook of European Birds | Two large hardcovers; Europe; non-passerines in Volume 1 and passerines in Volume 2 | 720 species and 1,056 pages in the ABA review’s main description; photographs, callouts and multiple plumages | Detailed visual study and difficult identifications | Bulky; omits calls, behavior and general impression |
| Collins Bird Guide: The Most Complete Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe | Conventional field-guide format for Britain and Europe | The ABA review names it as the traditional field-guide comparison; no matching page or species total was published | Portable field identification and a broader all-round treatment | Less specialized in the reviewed set’s large photographic comparison format |
| Identification Guide to European Passerines | Specialist passerine reference by Lars Svensson | Detailed passerine identification criteria; no comparable combined-set totals were published | Observers concentrating on passerines and fine separation points | Narrower group coverage than a two-volume Europe-wide set |
| Shorebirds: An Identification Guide to the Waders of the World | Specialist wader reference | Detailed wader identification criteria; no directly comparable set-wide totals were published | Birders working on shorebird identification | Specialist rather than a general European guide |
| Europe’s Birds: An Identification Guide | Single volume, published by WILDGuides in 2021 | 640 pages and 914 species in listings; NHBS lists 4,700 colour photographs, 540 colour distribution maps and 49 illustrations | One-volume coverage with a larger stated species total | Single-volume convenience means a different balance of scale and depth from two dedicated handbooks |
| Birds of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East: A Photographic Guide | 2017 compact photographic guide covering a broader region | 448 pages and 2,200 colour photos and maps, according to a 2018 BirdGuides review | Portable travel use and a wider geographic itinerary | The BirdGuides review finds it less useful for complex identification problems |
The numerical comparisons need context. Europe’s Birds lists more species in one volume, while the reviewed handbooks devote two volumes to a different visual-reference approach. The 2017 guide reaches North Africa and the Middle East and is much more portable, but its broader region and compact format are not designed to provide the same depth for difficult cases. A specialist passerine or shorebird book can go deeper within its group while covering far less of the European avifauna.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical workflow for using the handbooks
- Record what you actually observed. Note location, date, habitat, size, posture, flight, behavior, call and the visible plumage marks before opening a book. The handbooks cannot restore details that were never recorded.
- Use a field guide or your own shortlist to establish candidates. Narrow the possibilities with range, habitat, behavior and sound. Those inputs are outside the reviewed set’s core coverage.
- Open the appropriate volume. Start with Volume 1 for non-passerines and Volume 2 for passerines. If the group is uncertain, use another guide to avoid searching the wrong half of the set.
- Read the callouts, not just the photograph. Follow each label and identify the corresponding mark on your bird, photograph or notes. Treat an apparent match as a hypothesis until other marks agree.
- Compare all shown plumages. Check whether your bird could be a juvenile, winter, breeding, sex-specific or transitional plumage. Do not force an adult image to fit an immature bird.
- Use the family comparison pages. Compare head and tail patterns and wing formations across the candidates. Structural agreement is more reliable than one isolated color patch.
- Return to non-visual evidence. Recheck call, behavior, general shape, habitat and distribution in a complementary source. A visual match that conflicts with those observations needs further investigation.
- Document the final reasoning. Write down the decisive marks and the marks that ruled out the nearest alternatives. This turns a one-time answer into a reusable identification lesson.
Who should buy the two-volume set?
Choose it if you are a serious visual learner
The set makes sense for birders who enjoy studying plumage, maintain a home library, or routinely encounter identification problems that a quick field guide cannot settle. It is also a strong fit for teachers, local bird clubs and shared reference shelves where several observers can examine the same large pages.

Choose a different primary guide if portability comes first
If your priority is carrying one book on every walk, a conventional field guide or a compact photographic guide is more practical. The two-volume arrangement also means deciding in advance which volume to pack, and the books’ size makes them better suited to a vehicle, lodge, classroom or desk than to a small daypack.
Add another source if sound and behavior drive your birding
Song, call, flight behavior and overall impression can be the decisive evidence in many encounters. Keep a guide or recording resource that covers those dimensions, then use the handbooks for the close visual work they do best.
Geography and species coverage: read the numbers carefully
The reported 720 species include regular vagrants recorded in Europe, but the set is not presented as a guide to every bird of the Western Palearctic. A trip that includes North Africa or the Middle East therefore needs an additional regional source. Conversely, a birder whose itinerary stays within Europe may value the focused coverage more than a broader but shallower regional book.
Species totals also measure different editorial choices. A single-volume guide can list more species by allocating less page space to each account; a two-volume handbook can devote more room to comparative photographs and plumage states. Neither total, by itself, proves that one book is more useful for your identifications.
Edition and availability checks before purchase
- Confirm that the listing is the 2024 Princeton University Press two-volume set by Nils Van Duivendijk and Marc Guyt.
- Check whether the seller describes the set as 1,056 pages or 1,048 pages. Both figures appear in the ABA review in different contexts, so treat the discrepancy as unresolved until the publisher’s edition record confirms it.
- Verify that both hardcovers are included; a listing for only one volume is not the reviewed set.
- Check the regional edition, ISBNs, format and current stock because these details can change between markets.
- Do not assume a current price from an older listing. Retail prices and availability are volatile and were not established by the review.
Verdict
ID Handbook of European Birds is best understood as a detailed visual reference that complements, rather than replaces, a field guide. Its two-volume organization, annotated photographs, multiple plumages and structural comparison pages address the hardest part of many European identifications: deciding which small visual differences matter. Its size, Europe-only scope and lack of vocalization, behavior and general-impression coverage make it a poor pocket companion and an incomplete standalone solution. Buy it when depth and study matter more than portability; pair it with a conventional or specialist guide when you need the full set of evidence in the field.
