Yes—but build a secure, dark ground-level refuge rather than a brightly lit display. Lithobius forficatus is usually found beneath stones and in decaying timber, and adults have been collected under dead wood. A sensible starting enclosure therefore has a tight-fitting container, diggable substrate and at least one clean, pesticide-free hide. Published work confirms that adults can be kept in individual plastic boxes or a terrarium, but it does not establish a species-specific tank size, substrate depth, ventilation design, temperature or humidity target.
The instructions below separate what is documented from practical habitat-based inference, so you can set up a container without treating an untested number as an official care standard.

What the enclosure needs to accomplish
The goal is to reproduce the animal’s most relevant choice in the wild: a dark retreat at ground level. The UK Natural History Museum describes L. forficatus as widespread in urban and rural settings and usually found under stones and in decaying timber. Its listed body length is 9.5–13.5 mm; that measurement describes the centipede, not a recommended enclosure dimension. See the species account at Natural History Museum UK Species Dictionary.

- Containment: a box or terrarium that closes securely.
- Refuge: dark bark, dead-wood-like material or another stable cover.
- Digging opportunity: substrate that permits some burrowing, following general ground-dwelling arthropod guidance.
- Access for observation and feeding: enough opening space for you, but no escape route for a small centipede.
These are functional requirements, not a validated recipe. The available species studies describe how specimens were held, not a complete pet-care protocol.

Choose a container: individual box or terrarium
A 2019 morphology study kept adult L. forficatus individually in plastic boxes or together in a terrarium. The methods do not report dimensions, lid construction, ventilation measurements or a comparison of survival and behaviour between the arrangements. Read the methods in Comparative morphology of ultimate and walking legs in the centipede Lithobius forficatus.
| Option | What is documented | How to use that evidence | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual plastic box | Used for adults in the 2019 study. | A straightforward conservative choice for one animal, with a secure closure, substrate and hide. | No source-validated dimensions, lid type, airflow specification or minimum floor area. |
| Terrarium | Used for specimens housed together in the 2019 study. | Can hold substrate and multiple refuges if it closes securely. | The paper does not show that group housing is safe, preferable or suitable for every individual. |
For a home setup, individual housing is the cautious default because the publication reports individual maintenance but does not provide an outcome comparison for groups. Do not present the terrarium observation as proof that several centipedes can be kept together without injury, food competition or escapes.
Build the habitat step by step
1. Select a secure container
- Use a rigid plastic box or terrarium with a lid that closes completely.
- Check the entire rim, hinge area, corners and any cable or ventilation openings before adding the centipede. A small opening can become an escape route.
- Prefer a design that lets you open the enclosure deliberately rather than leaving a loose cover balanced on top.
- Do not infer a required length, width or height from the animal’s 9.5–13.5 mm body-length range. No such conversion is supplied by the species account or experimental papers.
If you add ventilation, keep it secure and covered so the opening cannot be used as a route out. The cited studies do not specify a hole size or ventilation rate, so any design you choose remains a practical containment decision rather than a published standard.
2. Add a diggable substrate
University of Florida IFAS guidance for live arthropod displays says ground-dwelling insects benefit from substrate in which they can dig. Apply that as broad guidance, not as a tested L. forficatus formula. The guidance is available in Guide to Collecting and Maintaining Live Arthropods for Classroom Display in Florida.
- Choose a clean material that is physically stable and free of visible contaminants.
- Arrange enough substrate for the centipede to move below or into it rather than placing it on a bare floor.
- Keep the surface accessible for placing food and checking the animal.
- Do not claim a particular substrate depth, blend or moisture percentage as species-specific; none is established in the cited sources.
The practical test is behavioural and mechanical: the animal should be able to disappear into or beneath the substrate, while you can still inspect the enclosure and remove uneaten prey.
3. Provide a dark refuge
Place at least one piece of clean, pesticide-free bark, dead-wood-like cover or another hide that creates a shaded underside. This is an inference from the species’ documented use of stones and decaying timber, not evidence that a particular commercial cork or wood product has been tested.

- Ensure the hide sits firmly and cannot collapse onto the centipede.
- Offer a covered underside or crevice at floor level rather than only an elevated ornament.
- If the container permits, provide more than one retreat so the animal can choose among shaded positions.
- Remove any material that shows chemical treatment, paint, fragrance, fresh sap or pesticide exposure.
IFAS specifically warns that pesticides can be dangerous to captive invertebrates. “Natural” appearance is not proof of safety; source and handling matter.
4. Position the hide and substrate together
Set the bark or cover partly against the substrate so it forms a continuous refuge. This arrangement gives the centipede both a surface shelter and a route into the substrate, matching the broad habitat pattern of hiding under stones or wood. It is a design inference, not a measured requirement.
5. Check the enclosure before introducing the animal
- Close the lid and inspect it from every side.
- Confirm that the hide is stable and that no gap opens when the container is moved gently.
- Verify that feeding and water access do not require leaving the lid unsecured.
- Remove pesticide-exposed plants, wood, leaf litter or soil before use.
Water and prey: what published methods actually did
Two publications document different maintenance intervals. The 2019 study reports water once a week and small house crickets (Acheta domesticus) every two weeks. A 2024 study reports providing water and small crickets once a week. The later paper is The venom and telopodal defence systems of the centipede Lithobius forficatus.
| Source protocol | Water | Prey | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 morphology study | Once weekly | Small crickets every two weeks | A documented laboratory maintenance schedule, not a validated household feeding rule. |
| 2024 venom and defence study | Once weekly | Small crickets once weekly | A second laboratory schedule; its difference from 2019 shows that published methods are not a single consensus interval. |
Offering water
The papers establish that water was supplied, but do not describe the vessel, volume, humidity effect or replacement procedure. Use a method that lets you provide water without creating an escape gap or flooding the substrate, and treat the weekly interval as a description of the studies rather than a universal prescription.
Offering crickets
Small crickets are the prey item named in both study protocols. They demonstrate that this food can be used in laboratory maintenance; they do not prove that every individual requires the same quantity or interval. Remove uneaten prey if it could disturb or injure the centipede, and record what happens after each offering so you can discuss any change with an invertebrate specialist.

Do not convert “small cricket” into an unqualified prey-size rule for all captive situations. The papers do not state cricket counts, centipede age classes, portion sizes or a response-based feeding chart.

Temperature, humidity and ventilation: avoid invented targets
The Natural History Museum account and the cited experimental methods do not establish numeric temperature or humidity targets for captive L. forficatus. They also do not provide a species-specific ventilation rate, substrate depth or enclosure volume. Consequently, this evidence cannot support a claim such as “keep it at X °C,” “maintain Y% humidity” or “use a tank of Z dimensions.”
That limitation does not make monitoring pointless. It tells you what to record rather than what number to pretend is authoritative:
- Write down the room conditions and any changes you make.
- Observe whether the centipede can reach a dark retreat and substrate interface.
- Check that the substrate is not visibly contaminated and that water provision is deliberate rather than accidental flooding.
- Inspect the lid and openings after every maintenance session.
Do not use a generic arthropod target as though it were measured for this species. Broad display guidance can support the need for substrate and hiding places, but it does not fill the missing environmental values.

Should you house more than one?
The 2019 paper says specimens were maintained individually in plastic boxes or together in a terrarium, but it does not compare outcomes or describe interactions. That is evidence that both arrangements were used in an experiment, not proof of compatibility.
If you cannot identify each animal, monitor each one separately or provide a separate container. Individual housing makes it easier to confirm feeding, inspect the animal and detect an escape. If you nevertheless use a terrarium for more than one, treat it as an unvalidated choice: secure the lid, provide several refuges and be prepared to separate animals at the first sign of conflict or inability to monitor them. No source establishes a safe group size, sex combination or communal stocking density.
Materials and contamination precautions
Use only materials whose history you can reasonably establish. The IFAS guidance warns that pesticides can harm captive invertebrates, so outdoor-collected leaves, bark, soil and wood should not be assumed safe merely because they look clean.

- Use separate tools for potentially treated outdoor material and the centipede’s container.
- Replace any material that becomes chemically contaminated rather than attempting to rinse away an unknown treatment.
The exact commercial material is not tested in the species literature. Calling a product “safe” would therefore overstate the evidence; describe it instead as a clean, pesticide-free refuge selected on habitat grounds.

- Before opening: confirm the container is on a stable surface and identify where the centipede and hide are located.
- During access: open only as far and for as long as needed to provide water, offer prey or remove leftovers.
- After feeding: note whether the cricket is taken and whether any prey remains.
- After watering: confirm that the water was delivered without saturating the entire enclosure or creating a lid gap.
- At each inspection: check the closure, hide stability, substrate condition and signs that the animal has escaped into an inaccessible space.
- When conditions change: record the change rather than attributing a response to a supposed universal temperature or humidity rule.
This log turns an evidence-limited setup into a repeatable observation process without pretending that the literature supplies missing husbandry numbers.
Common setup mistakes and corrections
Using a bare, brightly exposed container
Why it misses the habitat: the species is associated with cover beneath stones and decaying timber.
Correction: add a stable dark hide at ground level and substrate that permits some digging.
Choosing a container by body length alone
Why it is misleading: 9.5–13.5 mm is the reported body-length range, not a formula for enclosure size.
Recommended Free Tools
Correction: choose a container that can hold substrate and a refuge while closing securely; do not label an untested dimension as mandatory.

Assuming a terrarium proves group compatibility
Why it is misleading: the paper reports communal maintenance but no comparison of outcomes.
Correction: use individual housing as the conservative option, or be ready to separate animals.
Presenting one feeding interval as official
Why it is misleading: the 2019 and 2024 protocols differ in cricket frequency.
Correction: identify the publication and interval you are following, monitor the animal and avoid calling either schedule a consensus.
Adding outdoor material with an unknown chemical history
Why it is risky: pesticides can be dangerous to captive invertebrates.
Correction: use materials with a known, pesticide-free history and discard anything questionable.
What the evidence still does not answer
A responsible enclosure guide must leave some boxes unchecked. The cited material does not establish:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- a minimum or recommended enclosure length, width or height;
- a required ventilation opening or exchange rate;
- substrate composition, depth or moisture percentage;
- numeric temperature or relative-humidity targets;
- a lifespan or growth schedule for captive animals;
- a safe communal stocking density or proof of compatibility;
- a tested commercial bark, cork or soil product.
Those omissions are reasons to avoid false precision, not reasons to fill the enclosure with arbitrary numbers. Start with secure containment, dark cover, diggable substrate and uncontaminated materials, then keep observations that can guide a qualified invertebrate veterinarian, curator or researcher if a problem develops.
Bottom line for a first setup
Use a securely closing plastic box or terrarium, furnish it with clean pesticide-free substrate and a stable dark hide, and keep the animal at ground level where it can retreat beneath cover or into the substrate. Individual housing is the conservative choice because communal safety has not been demonstrated. Water and small crickets are documented laboratory foods, but the published intervals differ, so treat them as study methods rather than a definitive care schedule. Most importantly, do not invent temperature, humidity, substrate-depth or enclosure-size numbers that the available species evidence does not provide.
