Sonny found his permanent home because a Manhattan family agreed to foster him temporarily, then reconsidered when the puppy became part of their lives. Best Friends Animal Society connected Sonny—who was arriving from Alabama—with Joshua Ramus, Liana Khatri and their daughter Lilyblue. The family expected to care for him for about two weeks, but their growing attachment led them to adopt him themselves, with encouragement from another prospective adopter named Jill.
Why the family tried fostering first
Before Sonny arrived, Joshua and Liana did not assume that owning a dog would fit their household. They worked long hours and worried about the practical demands of caring for a dog in Manhattan. Lilyblue had wanted a dog for some time, but the adults still needed a way to understand how a dog would affect their schedule and home.

Fostering offered a limited commitment rather than an immediate promise of permanent ownership. Liana described the reasoning plainly: “Finally I said, why don’t we just foster because it’s a little bit lower stakes.” That decision let the family experience daily life with a puppy while giving a shelter animal a temporary place to stay.

The arrangement was not presented as a trial with a guaranteed outcome. The family expected Sonny to remain with them for roughly two weeks. During that period, they would learn about him and decide whether they could continue as his caregivers, while Best Friends could continue looking for an adopter if necessary.

How Sonny arrived in Manhattan
Best Friends contacted the family about Sonny, a puppy coming from Alabama who needed a foster home. The organization’s team introduced the family to him and sent him home with supplies for his arrival. The feature does not list those supplies, so it is not possible to identify particular food, bedding, toys or medical items from this account.
The first meeting made a strong impression on Liana. She called Sonny patient and calm. When it was time to leave, he sat politely while the family put on his harness. She then took him outside on a leash marked with the words “adopt me,” a small but visible sign that his temporary placement was also part of his search for a permanent family.
As Liana walked Sonny, she told people that he was available through Best Friends. Those conversations gave neighbors a way to learn about him and created an informal link between the foster home and potential adopters. The story does not say how many people asked about Sonny or how long he was expected to remain available.
The people who helped Sonny move toward a home
Sonny’s adoption was not the result of one person acting alone. The feature describes a chain that included the organization’s staff, the transport that brought him from Alabama, the foster family that cared for him, a woman who considered adopting him, and the family’s eventual decision to keep him.
| Stage | What the feature reports | People involved |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a foster home | Best Friends contacted the Manhattan family about a puppy arriving from Alabama. | Best Friends, Joshua, Liana and Lilyblue |
| Settling in | The organization introduced Sonny to the family and sent him home with supplies; the family expected a stay of about two weeks. | Best Friends and the foster family |
| Meeting the public | Liana walked Sonny on a leash labeled “adopt me” and told people he was available through Best Friends. | Liana, Sonny and interested neighbors |
| Connecting a prospective adopter | Liana gave Jill information about the New York Best Friends Lifesaving Center. | Liana and Jill |
| Making the permanent decision | After the family became attached, Best Friends asked whether they would adopt Sonny or let him go to another adopter. Liana called Jill, who supported the family’s choice. | The foster family, Best Friends and Jill |
This sequence matters because a foster placement can help an animal even when the foster caregiver does not adopt. In Sonny’s case, the family’s own decision changed the outcome, but Liana was also willing to direct an interested person toward the organization’s New York center. Jill’s support meant that the family could make its decision without treating her interest as a conflict.

When fostering became adoption
During Sonny’s stay, the family grew attached to him. Best Friends asked them to decide whether they would adopt him or allow him to move to another adopter. That conversation turned a temporary arrangement into a clear choice: keep Sonny as their own dog or return to the original foster plan.
Liana called Jill, the woman who had shown interest in Sonny after losing a previous dog and deciding she would not get another. Jill supported the family’s decision. The family then adopted Sonny.

It does not establish that every hesitant household will reach the same conclusion.
What daily life with Sonny was like for this family
The family’s account focuses on ordinary routines rather than a dramatic transformation. Sonny’s walks brought Liana into contact with neighbors. She called him “a local celebrity,” saying, “He’s famous in our neighborhood, a local celebrity.” The description is personal and playful, not a measurable claim about how many people knew him.
Liana also said that walking Sonny made it easier to leave work behind. She described a slower pace after he joined the household: “Living with Sonny has made me slow down a lot.” For someone who worked as an executive chef, the change was meaningful because coming home created a transition between a demanding workday and time with family and pet.

She described one way Sonny affected difficult days: “If I’ve had a bad day now, I come home and I pet Sonny for five minutes and think, ‘What was I even upset about?’” That is a personal account of comfort, not a medical or psychological treatment claim. Liana specifically clarified, “He’s not a therapy dog or anything. That’s just what pets do.” Sonny should therefore not be described as a trained therapy animal, and his behavior should not be presented as a promise about puppies generally.

It shows why a temporary commitment can be useful
The family’s original concern was practical: long work hours and uncertainty about dog ownership. Fostering gave them direct experience before they made a permanent decision. For a household considering fostering, the relevant lesson is not that adoption will necessarily follow, but that a temporary placement can reveal how a particular animal fits the household’s real routines.
It shows that the individual dog matters
The family responded to Sonny’s observed conduct: he was patient, calm and willing to sit while his harness was put on. Those details belong to Sonny’s story. They do not predict how another puppy will behave, how quickly another dog will settle in, or how much time another placement will require.
It shows that saying goodbye is part of fostering
Best Friends asked the family to choose between adopting Sonny and allowing another adopter to take him. That decision point is built into the story. A foster caregiver may become attached while still helping an animal move to a different home. Sonny’s family ultimately adopted him, but the feature does not suggest that adoption is the expected or preferred result for every foster placement.
It shows the value of redirecting interest to the responsible organization
When Jill became interested, Liana gave her information about the New York Best Friends Lifesaving Center rather than arranging an informal handoff. The account does not describe the center’s current hours, eligibility rules or adoption process. Anyone seeking those details should confirm them directly with Best Friends before making plans.

Questions the feature leaves open
This is a family story, not a current adoption-process guide. It does not provide Sonny’s age at adoption, vaccination or medical history, training schedule, exact foster supplies, household costs, the length of his transport, or the organization’s current foster requirements. It also does not establish present-day adoption listings, event schedules or viewing options for any Puppy Bowl event mentioned in connection with the broader feature.
Those omissions do not weaken the central account. They define its scope: the article documents how one puppy moved from an Alabama shelter journey to a Manhattan foster home and then into permanent adoption, as told by the people involved. Current procedures, available animals and local requirements can change, so they should be checked with the relevant Best Friends program rather than inferred from this 2024 story.
The larger community behind one adoption
Best Friends frames shelter-animal help as a set of connected roles. Fostering provides a temporary home; transport moves an animal to a place where a foster or adopter can help; adoption creates a permanent home; volunteering supplies time and practical assistance; advocacy encourages others to participate. Sonny’s path includes several of those roles, even though the feature does not quantify their overall impact.
For Sonny, the foster family’s willingness to try, Liana’s conversations during walks, Jill’s understanding of the family’s decision and the organization’s coordination all formed part of the outcome. The story’s point is not that every placement follows this exact sequence. It is that a successful adoption can depend on cooperation among people whose roles change as the animal’s needs become clearer.
Why the ending feels earned
The family did not begin with certainty that they wanted a dog. They began with a manageable question: could they care for one temporarily? Sonny’s calm behavior made the first days easier, but the permanent decision still required the adults to consider their responsibilities and choose openly. Their adoption followed that process rather than bypassing it.
That is what makes the final chapter of Sonny’s journey distinctive. He was not simply delivered to a ready-made home. He arrived as a foster puppy, met people who had reservations, became part of their routines, attracted interest from someone else, and remained with the family only after everyone involved had a chance to decide. The result was a home built through a sequence of small acts of care.
