AAHA’s 2025 roundup brings together guidelines, a practical toolkit, articles, retention research, and a podcast for National Veterinary Technician Week. Its most useful thread is what happens after recognition: practices can review whether technicians’ responsibilities and workflows make appropriate use of their education and skills, while supporting career satisfaction and retention.
What AAHA’s roundup includes
Published October 14, 2025, the AAHA roundup is a directory of professional resources, not a new clinical standard or a ranked list of recommendations. It points readers to several formats and uses:

How the utilization guidelines can help a practice
The 2023 AAHA Technician Utilization Guidelines introduction describes the guidelines as actionable strategies and practical tools for evaluating and improving how a practice uses veterinary technicians. The materials include goal worksheets, role-based workflows, utilization assessments, examples of technician levels and skills, case studies, and open-ended questions for team conversations.
#1 Best Overall
For a practice, the central question is whether assigned responsibilities and day-to-day workflows align with credentialed technicians’ training and skills. A team can use the worksheets and assessment to identify where roles are unclear, where workflows could be adjusted, and what goals to discuss. AAHA connects optimal utilization with job and career satisfaction, collaboration, and retention; these are aims to work toward, not guaranteed outcomes.
AAHA summarizes the purpose this way: “Together, the action steps, tools, and resources in these guidelines provide veterinary practices with strategies for improving utilization, job satisfaction, and retention of these valuable and skilled veterinary professionals.” The statement appears in the introduction to the 2023 guidelines.

Use the guidance as a framework, not a mandate
AAHA says its guidelines are not an exclusive protocol or standard of care. Recommendations draw on cited evidence where available as well as practical clinical experience and expert consensus. The guideline development page explains that a practice may need to adapt recommendations to its setting, resources, and limitations. Use local professional judgment when deciding what is appropriate.

Recognition during National Veterinary Technician Week can be a starting point for more durable workplace practices. AAHA’s appreciation guidance points to public recognition, respectful treatment, and sharing information about technicians’ work. Pairing that recognition with a conversation about responsibilities, development, and workplace support makes the week relevant beyond its dates.
Dates should be checked against the intended year. AAHA’s appreciation page says the 2024 observance ran October 13–19, 2024; that is a historical schedule, not a current-year date.
Where to find more AAHA learning resources
AAHA’s professional resource library says employees at AAHA-accredited hospitals and individual AAHA members can access its resources, many of which are free. The library features the technician-utilization toolkit, but access conditions can differ across resources; do not assume every item is free or open without registration.

The Technician Utilization Guidelines resource center lists certificate courses, webinars, and other learning opportunities. Check each listing for eligibility, registration, and any applicable terms.
Choose a resource by the action you need
| Resource format | Best fit | Action it can support |
|---|---|---|
| Guidelines and toolkit | Practice leaders, technicians, and teams reviewing how roles are used | Assess workflows, clarify goals, and structure team discussion |
| Articles and retention research | Readers exploring recognition, career topics, utilization, or retention | Inform discussion about workplace practices and career support |
| Podcast | Listeners interested in advocacy, compensation, progression, and innovation | Prompt conversation about technicians’ professional concerns and opportunities |
These are different entry points, not competing options. A practice could start with the toolkit for a workflow review, then use relevant articles or research to broaden a team conversation.
