What the episode is about
Best Friends’ description says the conversation addresses Ippoliti-Smith’s career, Maddie’s Fund’s influence on animal welfare and sheltering, and what she sees ahead for the no-kill movement. The description also characterizes Maddie’s Fund’s impact this way: “From the support of individual shelters and rescue organizations to national campaigns and the vast amount of resources and programs, online courses, and conferences, Maddie’s fundamentally changed what we do and how we do it.” This is the publisher’s description, not a quotation attributed to Ippoliti-Smith.

Who is Mary Ippoliti-Smith?
The biography on the episode page, published in 2021, says Ippoliti-Smith joined Maddie’s Fund in 1998 and then served on its Executive Leadership Team, helping develop strategic direction, the annual operating business plan, and policies. It describes her earlier role as vice president of operations, overseeing day-to-day operations and philanthropic activities, managing a multimillion-dollar budget, and handling grant distributions of more than $10 million annually. That grant figure refers to the historical biography and her prior operations role; it should not be read as Maddie’s Fund’s current annual grant total.
The same biography says she spent seven years at the San Francisco SPCA before joining Maddie’s Fund and earned a degree in development studies from UC Berkeley. These are biographical details reported on the 2021 page, not confirmation of her current position or circumstances.
