The volunteer group began as an effort to help the American Animal Hospital Association recognize DEIB issues more deliberately and connect with the broader veterinary community. Its reported work now reaches staff education, public communications, advocacy, conference access, external partnerships and efforts to widen the veterinary career pipeline.
AAHA’s own materials describe an evolving organizational effort rather than a completed program with published outcome scores. The association explains what the committee has worked on and the direction it wanted to take in December 2024, while the available accounts do not provide a current roster, formal charter or independent evaluation of results.

When did AAHA’s DEIB committee start?
AAHA dates its first internal DEIB committee to 2020. The committee was formed to promote greater recognition of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in veterinary medicine and to improve AAHA’s connection with the wider veterinary community.

In AAHA’s December 2024 retrospective, marketing coordinator and committee member Samantha Motyl said the group wanted inclusion to be visible in AAHA’s thought leadership and outreach, not treated as a private internal issue. That ambition shaped changes in the association’s content, events and educational activities.

The five-year framing used in the 2024 article refers to the period since the committee’s 2020 formation. It is a description of the committee’s age, not a measure of its impact. The sources do not publish participation totals, representation targets, retention figures or other outcome measures.
What DEIB means in AAHA’s framework
AAHA’s DEIB initiative page describes a welcoming environment in which every individual feels valued and respected. It organizes the work around four connected commitments. AAHA presents these as an initiative framework; the published material does not establish that they are a formal committee charter or an exhaustive list of committee values.
Leadership creates the foundation
The first commitment is to build a foundation by motivating leaders. In practice, that means treating DEIB as an organizational responsibility rather than assigning it only to people from underrepresented groups or to a single staff volunteer group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFair internal teamwork and talent
The second commitment is to use internal teamwork to attract and retain diverse talent while treating people fairly and equitably. This is the part of the framework most directly connected to staff culture, internal education and the way AAHA works with colleagues.
Sustained education links inside and outside work
The third commitment is to bridge internal and external efforts through long-term education and initiatives. It signals that a one-time statement or awareness campaign is not enough; the association describes continuing learning as the connection between its workplace practices and its public role.
External collaboration serves communities
The fourth commitment is collaboration with outside groups to serve communities and promote diverse, equitable and inclusive practices. Partnerships, pathway events and shared educational resources fit this part of the framework.
AAHA separately lists PrideVMC among its DEIB resources and says it signed the Gender Identity Bill of Rights in August 2022. That resource listing provides context for the association’s public commitments, but it does not turn PrideVMC into a committee department or establish a governance relationship.

How the committee’s work expanded
AAHA’s accounts show a committee that moved from raising awareness internally to influencing how the association communicates, convenes people and works with partners. The following are examples AAHA reports; they are not presented as an audited inventory of every project.
Representation in content and communications
Committee members wanted AAHA’s public-facing material to reflect a wider range of people and experiences in veterinary medicine. The 2024 retrospective describes more representative imagery and a broader content strategy that included additional topics, resources and subject-matter experts.
The communications work also included diversity-focused print and digital articles, social-media campaigns centered on solidarity, and promotion of DEIB webinars to both internal and external audiences. These activities make the association’s stated values visible in ordinary publishing and outreach rather than limiting them to a policy page.
Advocacy and position statements
The committee collaborated on AAHA position statements about DEIB issues. Examples named by AAHA include a plea to end discrimination and violence toward Asian American and Pacific Islander people, and guidance connected with the association’s signing of the Gender Identity Bill of Rights pledge.
These efforts place the committee in a convening and advisory role around the association’s public voice. The available article does not say that the committee independently issued binding policy or that every recommendation became an AAHA-wide rule.
Internal learning and awareness dates
AAHA says the committee highlighted cultural and religious holidays, heritage celebrations and awareness dates for staff. In December 2024, the group was still planning to expand education around dates such as Neurodiversity Awareness Week and Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Awareness calendars can be useful when they lead to informed discussion, accommodation and policy review. They can also become symbolic if they are disconnected from everyday decisions. AAHA’s published descriptions establish the educational activity and its intended direction, but do not include an assessment of how staff participation or workplace outcomes changed.

Conference access and belonging at AAHA Con
AAHA reports that the committee helped advance several practical measures at AAHA Con:
- gender-neutral bathrooms;
- neuroinclusive accommodations;
- a nursing and pumping lounge;
- pronoun sharing; and
- a formal Code of Conduct.
These measures address different barriers. Facilities and accommodations affect whether people can participate comfortably; pronoun sharing can make introductions less presumptive; and a Code of Conduct states expected behavior and a route for responding to problems. The sources do not provide attendance data, incident reports or a participant survey that would show the size of their effect.
External partnerships and career pathways
AAHA describes a multi-year collaboration with blendVet. AAHA characterizes blendVet as providing DEIB-focused training and certification for veterinary teams and funding pathway events intended to encourage young people to consider veterinary careers.
The retrospective names pathway events held at AAHA Con in 2023 and 2024. It describes another event as planned for 2025. Because the article was published in December 2024, that wording should not be read as confirmation that the 2025 event occurred.
This partnership links professional education with the longer-term pipeline into veterinary medicine. The published accounts do not report the number of participants who attended, entered training or later joined the profession.

Why belonging is more than access
“Belonging” adds a question that is different from whether a person is technically allowed to attend or apply. In an AAHA interview published in March 2023, Ewan D. S. Wolff, PhD, DVM, DACVIM—identified there as PrideVMC’s industry liaison and a co-author of its Gender Identity Bill of Rights and Gender Diversity Guide—described belonging as feeling that a place is yours and that you can participate actively.
Wolff explained the perspective involved this way: “The definition of belonging, very similar to the definition of discrimination for that matter, is that it’s something that is understood from the perspective of the people involved.”

- Joint Health Supplement for Dogs: Cosequin is the #1 vet recommended retail joint health supplement brand, supporting joint health in dogs for over 25 years
- Contains Glucosamine for Dogs: Cosequin contains glucosamine hydrochloride (FCHG49) and sodium chondroitin sulfate (TRH122), plus methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). This unique combination of ingredients supports healthy joints
- For Any Breed or Size: Whether you have a young or senior dog, a small or large breed, Cosequin helps support their joint health
- Tasty Chews for Daily Use: Cosequin comes in a tasty chewable tablet, making daily administration easy and convenient
- Exceptional Quality: Cosequin is backed by science, undergoing thorough quality inspections to ensure your dog receives a safe, high-quality product. It is manufactured in the United States with globally sourced ingredients
That distinction helps explain why AAHA’s reported conference measures combine physical access with social signals and conduct expectations. A ramp, a quiet accommodation or a restroom option can remove a barrier, but belonging also depends on whether people feel safe speaking, networking and being recognized as full participants.
Wolff also argued that inclusion requires continuing education, bringing people into the profession and leadership, and everyday allyship. His warning is concise: “Ally is not a ribbon that you can wear or a bumper sticker. It’s something that requires an effort every single day.” These are Wolff’s views in a broader veterinary conversation, not statements issued by AAHA’s committee.
AAHA’s reported work by area
| Area | Examples AAHA reports | What the public account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Internal culture and education | Staff learning around cultural and religious holidays, heritage celebrations and awareness dates | AAHA describes ongoing educational activity and plans to expand it |
| Public advocacy | Collaboration on position statements addressing discrimination, violence and gender identity | The committee contributed to AAHA’s public-facing advocacy work |
| Communications | More representative imagery, broader topics and experts, DEIB articles, solidarity campaigns and webinar promotion | DEIB considerations were incorporated into content and outreach |
| Event access | Gender-neutral bathrooms, neuroinclusive accommodations, a nursing and pumping lounge, pronoun sharing and a Code of Conduct at AAHA Con | AAHA reports concrete conference-access and conduct measures |
| External collaboration and pipeline | Work with blendVet and pathway events at AAHA Con in 2023 and 2024, with a 2025 event described as planned | AAHA reports a multi-year partnership and named event examples |
This pattern shows breadth rather than a ranking of priorities. The sources cover internal culture, communications, event access and external collaboration, but they do not attach a common set of outcome indicators to those areas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What AAHA said about the future in December 2024
More education around identity and heritage
The committee’s then-current plans included expanding internal education around Neurodiversity Awareness Week and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, alongside broader attention to cultural heritage and identity dates. These plans suggest a move from occasional recognition toward a more deliberate educational calendar.
More ways for people to participate
AAHA said committee meetings were structured so members and nonmembers could collaborate on projects of interest. That approach can widen the pool of contributors and let staff engage with specific projects without requiring every participant to join a permanent committee. The article describes the meeting model; it does not publish attendance or project-completion figures.
An ambition to lead the profession
AAHA’s longer-range ambition was to position the association as an industry leader in veterinary DEIB. This is a stated goal, not a verified status. Leadership would require evidence beyond a list of activities, such as transparent standards, sustained implementation and credible measures of whether veterinary professionals experience better access, safety and advancement.
Because the retrospective was published in December 2024, it cannot verify what happened after that date. The available materials do not establish whether the 2025 pathway event occurred, whether the planned education expanded, or whether the committee’s structure changed.

What is known—and what is not measured
The strongest public evidence concerns AAHA’s own account of its formation, examples of work, initiative framework and stated ambitions. Several important governance and evaluation details remain unreported in the sources reviewed:
- There is no published current committee roster.
- The sources do not provide a formal committee charter defining authority, membership terms or reporting lines.
- No formal impact evaluation or longitudinal results are presented.
- The accounts do not show whether every stated goal was completed.
- There are no published figures for conference accommodation use, Code of Conduct cases, staff participation, pathway-event conversion or changes in workforce representation attributable to the committee.
AAHA’s NEWStat retrospective also carries a disclaimer that its columns are intended to inform, educate or entertain and do not represent an official position of AAHA or its Board of Directors. Readers should therefore distinguish between a reported committee activity, an association-wide policy and an independently measured result.
That distinction does not make the work insignificant. It makes the claims more precise: AAHA has documented an organizational effort and a set of practices, while the public record available here does not establish their scale or outcomes.

How to interpret the committee’s evolution
AAHA’s trajectory can be understood in four connected steps:
- Formation: an internal volunteer committee was created in 2020 to raise recognition of DEIB and strengthen connection with the veterinary community.
- Integration: the group brought DEIB into imagery, editorial planning, webinars, awareness dates and staff learning.
- Application: the association connected values to conference facilities, accommodations, pronoun practices and a Code of Conduct, while also contributing to advocacy statements.
- Extension: partnerships and pathway events linked the association’s internal work with professional education and the future veterinary workforce.
This is an evolution in scope, not proof of a completed transformation. The next stage depends on whether AAHA can sustain the practices, explain responsibility and publish meaningful evidence of who benefits and where gaps remain.
Bottom line for readers
AAHA’s DEIB committee began in 2020 and has grown into a cross-functional effort touching culture, communications, advocacy, conference access and career pathways. Its four-part framework emphasizes leadership, fair internal teamwork, sustained education and external collaboration. The reported examples show how those ideas have been applied, from representative content and staff awareness work to gender-neutral facilities, neuroinclusive accommodations and blendVet pathway events.
The careful conclusion is that AAHA has described a substantial and continuing initiative, not that it has demonstrated a measured outcome. The committee’s future, as described in December 2024, centered on deeper education, wider participation and an ambition to lead veterinary DEIB. Confirming progress beyond those plans will require newer reporting, a clear account of governance and public measures of results.
