No rescue, location, listing, ages, breeds, fees, or adoption statuses are identified by that phrase alone. Confirm those details with the rescue before making plans.
The useful next step is preparation: arrange an indoor living area, remove hazards, gather essential supplies, and identify a rabbit-savvy veterinarian before any rabbit comes home. The checklist below follows House Rabbit Society guidance while leaving animal-specific decisions to the rescue and veterinary team.

What “buns” and “baker’s dozen” mean here
Rabbit-rescue communities commonly use “bun” as an affectionate nickname for a rabbit. “Baker’s dozen” conventionally suggests thirteen, but the title does not establish that thirteen rabbits form one real adoption group. Search results for the phrase also include unrelated dog-rescue and puppy material, so it cannot identify a particular shelter or current group of animals.

That distinction matters when you are deciding whether to adopt. Treat the title as a general invitation to learn about rabbit rescue, then verify the actual listing: which organization has the rabbit, where adoption takes place, whether the rabbit is still available, and what care or housing requirements apply. Do not infer an animal’s age, breed, sex, medical history, adoption fee, or status from a photograph or a headline.

Make the home ready before contacting a rescue
Preparation is not something to postpone until pickup day. House Rabbit Society recommends having an indoor cage or pen ready before bringing a rabbit home so you can inspect the area and reduce hazards in advance. Decide where the rabbit will live, how much access it will receive initially, and who will supervise the first exploration sessions.
Choose a controlled indoor starting area
House Rabbit Society lists an exercise pen, a condo, or a gated section of a room as possible housing approaches. The right category depends on the space you can make safe and the way you plan to supervise access. A designated area gives a newly arrived rabbit a predictable base while you learn its habits; free run of the entire home requires every accessible part of that home to be prepared first.
| Setup approach | What it is useful for | Decisions to make before arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Exercise pen | A defined indoor area that can contain a litter box, hay, resting space, bowls, and enrichment. | Where it will stand, how it will be secured, and how you will open it for supervised time outside. |
| Condo | A dedicated rabbit enclosure when vertical organization suits the room. | Whether each level is safe and accessible, and how supplies and litter will fit without crowding. |
| Gated area | A section of a room or home that can be isolated while habits and hazards are assessed. | Which boundaries prevent unsupervised access and how gates will remain closed when no one is watching. |
| Free run | Broad access after the home has been thoroughly rabbit-proofed and the rabbit’s behavior is understood. | Whether every accessible cord, gap, plant, surface, and doorway has been checked; expand access gradually rather than assuming it is safe on day one. |
There is no single “best” setup in the guidance. Evaluate the size and safety of the area, the completeness of your rabbit-proofing, the ease of supervision, and whether the layout leaves room for a litter box, hay, a resting place, and toys.

- Enrichment: toys and safe chewing choices. House Rabbit Society specifically names hay, untreated wood, cardboard, and untreated straw mats as alternatives to household objects.
- Grooming: basic grooming tools suitable for the rabbit’s coat and a routine for checking the animal calmly.
- Rabbit-proofing materials: barriers or heavy-duty plastic cord protection, along with anything needed to close gaps and restrict access.
The guide does not rank commercial models or establish current prices. Match dimensions and construction to the individual rabbit and the space, and ask the rescue whether the rabbit has preferences or restrictions that affect the setup.
Rabbit-proof electrical cords and other hazards
Electrical cords deserve special attention because a rabbit can reach them quickly and supervision is not a reliable safeguard. House Rabbit Society advises blocking cords or encasing them in heavy-duty plastic; it warns that a rabbit may bite through a cord before a person can intervene.
- Walk through every room the rabbit could enter, including behind furniture and near charging stations.
- Move cords out of reach where possible, then block the remaining routes with a physical barrier or heavy-duty protective covering.
- Close narrow gaps behind appliances and furniture so the rabbit cannot disappear into an unprotected space.
- Offer approved chewing alternatives—hay, wood, cardboard, or untreated straw mats—in the prepared area.
- Keep the rabbit in the starting pen or gated zone whenever no responsible person is actively supervising.
- Recheck the room after furniture moves, cleaning, or adding a new cable; rabbit-proofing is an ongoing inspection, not a one-time glance.
House Rabbit Society also describes supervised time outside the enclosure while both the rabbit and the home are being assessed. If you cannot see what the rabbit is doing, that time is not supervised.
Plan transport and the first hours at home
Ask the rescue how the rabbit should be collected and what information will travel with the animal. Bring the prepared hard-sided carrier and keep the route as calm and direct as possible. The rescue should tell you about the rabbit’s current diet, litter habits, medical care, and any special handling needs; do not assume that two rabbits with similar appearances have identical routines.

At home, place the carrier inside or beside the prepared indoor area and allow the rabbit to move out at its own pace when practical. Keep the first session quiet. Show the locations of the litter box, hay, water, and resting area without forcing interaction. A limited starting space makes it easier to notice eating, drinking, elimination, and unusual behavior.
Litter training is a gradual process
A new home can temporarily disrupt a rabbit’s litter habits. House Rabbit Society recommends starting with a limited pen area, placing a suitably sized litter box where the rabbit tends to eliminate, and using safe litter with hay. As habits stabilize, expand access gradually.
- Begin with the rabbit’s pen or a small gated area rather than the whole home.
- Observe which corner the rabbit chooses for elimination and place the litter box there.
- Keep hay with the litter setup as recommended by House Rabbit Society, while maintaining clean food and water supplies.
- Watch for consistent use instead of expecting immediate perfection.
- Increase the accessible area in small stages once litter habits are stable.
- If accidents increase after expansion, reduce the area again and proceed more slowly.
Accidents during acclimation are part of the process, not proof that a rabbit cannot learn. Clean the area safely, review whether the box is suitably sized and positioned, and tell the rescue or veterinarian if a sudden change accompanies other health concerns.

Hay should be ready when the rabbit arrives, and bowls should be stable enough not to slide or tip easily. Ask the rescue exactly what the rabbit has been eating and make any change with professional guidance rather than introducing several new foods at once.

Chewing is a normal reason to prepare the environment, not a behavior to punish. Supply the safe alternatives named by House Rabbit Society—hay, untreated wood, cardboard, and untreated straw mats—and remove anything that is treated, painted, or otherwise not approved for rabbit use. Rotate toys and inspect them for damage so a worn item does not become a hazard.

A careful conversation protects both the rabbit and the adopter. Ask questions that the title cannot answer.
- Which rescue currently has the rabbit, and where will the adoption or handoff occur?
- Is the rabbit still available, and are there adoption requirements specific to this animal?
- What age, sex, breed description, and identification information does the rescue have?
- What veterinary care has the rescue provided, and are records available?
- What food, hay, litter, carrier, and housing arrangement is the rabbit using now?
- How does the rabbit behave around handling, other animals, household noise, and time outside an enclosure?
- Has the rabbit shown any litter-training pattern or chewing preference?
- What should the adopter do if eating, drinking, elimination, or behavior changes after the move?
Rescue-raised young rabbits may receive nutrition, socialization, and veterinary care before adoption, according to House Rabbit Society’s baby-rabbit guidance. That does not mean every rescue follows an identical program, so request the actual records and policies for the rabbit you are considering. Adoption through a rescue can also help prevent further overbreeding, but the organization’s specific mission and practices should be confirmed directly.
Arrange rabbit-savvy veterinary care
Identify a veterinarian experienced with rabbits before adoption day. House Rabbit Society recommends a rabbit-savvy veterinarian and lists warning signs that merit prompt attention. Ask the rescue which clinic has treated the rabbit and how to transfer records.

Seek veterinary advice promptly if the rabbit shows the warning signs described by the rescue or House Rabbit Society, or if you notice a meaningful change in eating, drinking, elimination, or behavior. Do not wait for a routine appointment when an animal appears unwell. The veterinarian, not a generic pet-care checklist, should set the individual plan for examination, treatment, and follow-up.
Expand access safely after settling in
Supervised exploration should follow the rabbit’s progress, not a fixed calendar. Keep the pen or gated area available as a retreat. Open one additional section at a time, watch how the rabbit navigates it, and inspect newly accessible cords and gaps before each expansion. If litter habits deteriorate or the rabbit becomes overwhelmed, return to the last successful boundary and try again later.
This staged approach also helps you distinguish a housing problem from an individual adjustment issue. A rabbit that needs more time is not failing; the environment may simply be changing faster than the rabbit can process.
A practical adoption-day checklist
- Confirm the rescue’s identity, location, availability, and adoption requirements.
- Prepare the indoor pen, condo, or gated area before pickup.
- Protect or block every reachable electrical cord.
- Set out the hard-sided top- and front-opening carrier.
- Place a suitably sized litter box with rabbit-safe litter.
- Stock hay, heavy bowls, and approved enrichment.
- Keep grooming tools and rabbit-proofing materials ready.
- Obtain veterinary records and the rescue’s feeding and care instructions.
- Know which rabbit-savvy veterinarian to call if warning signs appear.
- Plan quiet, supervised introductions to the rest of the home.
What a responsible “baker’s dozen” feature can—and cannot—promise
A playful headline can encourage adoption, but it cannot substitute for an individual animal profile. Until a rescue provides a current listing, the number of rabbits, their identities, and their adoption status remain unverified. The responsible promise is practical: prepare a safe indoor space, ask the rescue precise questions, and make decisions based on the rabbit in front of you.
