You may be able to meet a dog and adopt the same day at an event or at a shelter—but neither the location nor the format guarantees a particular dog will be there, what screening is required, how much adoption costs, or how quickly you can take a dog home. The organization running the adoption sets the rules. Check the specific dog’s listing and the event’s or shelter’s current instructions before you go.
What is different about an event and a shelter?
An adoption event describes a temporary or partner location where dogs may be presented for adoption. A shelter is an organization or facility; shelters may also hold events away from their facility. The setting alone does not tell you how the organization handles applications, meetings, fees, or post-adoption support.

ASPCA notes that animal-welfare organizations set their own processes, fees, and parameters: some permit same-day adoptions, while others take longer. Its adoption guidance is useful for preparing, but the organization handling the dog is the authority on its current policy.
What happens at a dog adoption event?
First confirm the exact dog is expected to attend and is still available. Event schedules, locations, and procedures can change. ASPCA says its mobile events let prospective adopters meet and spend time with animals and may allow them to go home with a pet the same day. Those events are first-come-first-served, and the events focus mostly on cats and kittens, so do not assume a dog will be present. Check ASPCA’s current event updates before setting out.

If adoption is offered on site, expect to meet the dog and follow that event’s application or paperwork process. One example—not a rule for other organizers—is a Petco Love event in Houston that describes meet-and-greet stations and paperwork reviewed before approval. That event specifies a minimum age of 18, valid photo ID, proof of address, and a leash and collar for dog adopters. Requirements and fees elsewhere may differ.
Example: event-specific fees and care information
The cited Petco Love Houston event page describes age-appropriate vaccines, spay/neuter, and microchipping unless otherwise noted. It lists a $50 adoption fee on Saturday and free adoptions on Sunday. Those are details of that particular event, not a typical price or current quote for another event. Confirm the current event page and the fee and care details for the dog you are considering.

What happens when you adopt through a shelter?
You may meet the dog at the organization’s facility and speak with adoption staff about the dog’s known needs. For example, SPCA of Texas describes shelter meet-and-greets or appointments with its adoption team. It says staff share what they know—and do not know—about each animal, and may offer behavior recommendations or require particular home characteristics for some animals.

Questions to ask about the dog and the process
- Is this exact dog expected at the event or available at the shelter now?
- How can I meet the dog? Can household members or resident pets participate, and what does the organization recommend?
- What is known about the dog’s medical history, behavior, training, and time in care? What remains unknown?
- Which veterinary services have already been completed for this dog, and which are still needed?
- What paperwork or eligibility requirements apply? Ask specifically about age, photo ID, proof of address, landlord approval, or any other requested information.
- Is a same-day decision expected? Are holds, advance applications, or later appointments possible?
- What is the total fee for this dog, what does it include, and is any discount or waiver specific to the event?
- What veterinary, behavioral, or return support is available after adoption?
Care included with an adoption can vary by organization and by animal. SPCA of Texas says it provides dogs and cats in its care with spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, age-appropriate vaccinations, and medical and behavioral evaluations. Humane Society Silicon Valley lists spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccines, routine deworming, and a microchip with lifetime registration among its own adoption inclusions. Ask what has been done for the individual dog rather than assuming a standard package.
How to prepare for the event or shelter visit
Before you leave
- Confirm dogs will be present, the dog is still available, and the event’s current hours and location—or the shelter’s meeting arrangements.
- Check how meetings work, whether you need to apply or be approved in advance, and whether holds or appointments are offered.
- Verify the current fee and which documents to bring. ASPCA’s New York City mobile-adoption guidance requests non-expired government-issued ID showing date of birth, says proof of address may be needed, and recommends checking that your landlord or building permits pets. Requirements are specific to that location and event.
- Plan safe transport. A cited Petco Love event asks dog adopters to bring a leash and collar; check whether your organizer requires or supplies anything else.
When you bring the dog home
Set up a quiet, safe area and remove household hazards before arrival. ASPCA recommends a predictable routine, patience, giving a dog space, and not forcing interactions while the animal adjusts. Arrange regular veterinary care after adoption. A dog may need time to settle in, so ask the organization how to handle the needs it already knows about and where to get help if questions arise.

Are event adoptions cheaper or faster?
There is no reliable general rule that an event costs less or takes less time than adopting through a shelter. Fees and processes are set by each organization, and promotions may occasionally reduce or waive fees. Ask for the current total fee and expected timing for the specific dog; an event promotion or same-day option at one organization does not establish what another will offer.
