To adopt a cat or dog from a humane society, start by checking nearby humane societies, municipal shelters, and nonprofit rescues, then follow the specific organization’s current instructions. Processes, fees, eligibility rules, and pickup arrangements vary. Before you visit, confirm what to bring, prepare your home and transport plan, and ask what veterinary care the animal has already received.
1. Find local shelters and available pets
Start with organizations close enough for visits and follow-up: humane societies, municipal shelters, and nonprofit rescue groups. The ASPCA’s shelter-finding page recommends identifying and contacting a local animal shelter and links to ways to find organizations. Check each shelter’s own listings for current animals, biographies, contact details, hours, and adoption instructions; availability can change.

2. Choose for fit, not just appearance
Consider how an animal’s known age, energy level, temperament, behavior, and medical needs fit your household and daily routine. Think about work hours, exercise time, children, and any other pets. A biography can help you decide what to ask, but it cannot guarantee how a pet will behave in a new home.
Ask shelter staff or a foster caregiver what they have observed, what support the animal may need, and what is still unknown. Organizations can help assess whether a pet may suit your household, but no single rating or matching score replaces an honest discussion of your circumstances.
#1 Best Overall
- Hard sided pet carrier with 2 doors for front and top entry; suitable for cat or medium size dog weighing 12 - 20 pounds
- Durable plastic construction with steel wire doors; screws keep the top and bottom sections securely connected
- Spring load latches ensure easy one-handed door opening and closing; top door swings open to the left or right and includes a top carry handle
- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
- Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size
3. Confirm the shelter’s adoption process before going
There is no single nationwide humane-society application or approval process. Some organizations may use a questionnaire, application, appointment, or additional matching steps; some may offer same-day adoptions. Household criteria and meeting arrangements also differ. The ASPCA notes that each animal welfare organization has its own process, fees, and parameters in its adoption guidance.
Read the organization’s current instructions and contact it before traveling. Ask:
- Is the animal still available, and how are meetings arranged?
- What identification, address information, or other documents should I bring?
- Should household members or other pets attend a meeting?
- Is landlord or building approval relevant to the application?
- How long might the process take, and can an adoption be completed that day?
- What equipment is required to take the pet home safely?
These are questions for the shelter you plan to use, not universal adoption requirements.

A location-specific example: ASPCA’s New York City center
The ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City currently says adopters must be at least 18 and bring a valid, non-expired government-issued photo ID; proof of current address may be needed in some cases. It also requires cats and kittens to leave in a secure pet carrier and publishes its own visit arrangements and fees. Those details apply to that center and may change; they are not rules for every humane society.
4. Ask what the adoption fee includes and budget beyond it
Ask for the current fee and an itemized explanation of what is included. Fees vary by organization and may be reduced or waived during promotions. Depending on the shelter and animal, a fee may include services such as spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, or microchipping. Do not assume a particular service has been completed until the shelter confirms it.
Plan separately for food, basic supplies, routine veterinary care, parasite prevention, and unexpected medical expenses. The shelter can tell you what the pet has received and what care is due next; its fee should not be treated as a complete estimate of the cost of pet ownership.

5. Prepare your home for the pet
Set up a quiet place where the animal can rest and retreat. Before bringing the pet home, secure doors, windows, cords, and tempting chewable items; check that plants are safe for pets; and use gates if they will help limit access. If you already have pets, keep their food and belongings separate at first when needed.

Best Friends Animal Society’s new-cat checklist recommends preparing cozy bedding or a blanket, a hiding place, a litter box and unscented litter, food and water bowls, the food the cat has been eating, toys, a scratching post or pad, and a carrier. Arrange these in a quiet room where the cat can settle for the first few days.
For a dog
Have food and water bowls, suitable bedding, toys, and a safe resting area ready. A crate can be useful for some dogs, but it is optional and should not replace supervision, exercise, or time outside it. If you choose one, the Humane Society of the United States advises selecting a crate that lets the dog stand and turn around and introducing it gradually with positive steps in its pet-care guide.

Ask the shelter what transport equipment it requires or recommends. A secure carrier is a practical choice for a cat, and Best Friends includes one in its general new-cat checklist. The ASPCA’s carrier requirement applies specifically to its New York City center, so confirm the rule at the organization where you adopt. For a dog, ask what restraint or other travel arrangements the shelter recommends for the trip.
7. Collect health information and arrange veterinary care
Before leaving, ask for available health records and confirm which vaccinations, procedures, or other care have been completed and when follow-up is due. Arrange regular care with a local veterinarian. The ASPCA recommends planning for checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and potential emergencies; its adoption guidance also covers veterinary planning.
