Greyhounds are not automatically suited to every home: ask about the dog’s behavior, experience with children and other animals, daily routine and health needs before deciding.
Is a greyhound a good fit for your household?
Greyhounds are large dogs, and their personalities and needs vary. A rescue’s behavior assessment can help identify an individual dog’s traits, but it cannot guarantee an easy or stress-free transition. RSPCA Australia recommends asking about the dog’s experience with children, other animals, being alone, stairs and indoor surfaces.

The Retired Greyhound Trust describes greyhounds as gentle and adaptable and says they commonly retire at three to five years old. It also notes that greyhounds have an instinct to chase. Discuss cats and small pets with the rescue rather than assuming a particular dog will be safe with them. [Retired Greyhound Trust: All About Greyhounds]
Questions to ask about the dog
- What is known about the dog’s temperament, history and experience in a home?
- How has the dog responded to children, resident dogs, cats and smaller animals?
- What is known about the dog’s comfort with being left alone, stairs, slippery floors and household sounds?
- What exercise, enrichment and routine does this dog currently have?
- What health records or ongoing care needs should the adopter understand?
How do you adopt a greyhound?
Procedures differ by organization and location. For its UK program, the Retired Greyhound Trust describes a process of contacting a local branch, visiting to meet dogs and completing a home visit. It says its greyhounds are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before homing, and that the described package includes a collar, lead, muzzle and four weeks of Petplan insurance. The Trust notes that branch procedures can vary, so confirm the details with the branch you contact. [Retired Greyhound Trust: Rehoming Process]
Ask any adoption organization how it assesses dogs and matches them with homes, whether you can meet the dog, what veterinary care and identification are complete, what supplies or insurance are included, and what guidance is available after adoption. RSPCA UK says its process considers each animal and household individually. Its adoption fees vary by animal and centre, so request an itemized explanation rather than relying on a general estimate. How should you prepare your home and the first weeks?
A dog moving from a kennel environment may find household life unfamiliar. RSPCA Australia notes that floors, stairs, glass doors, noises and routines can be new or overwhelming. Set up a quiet place where the dog can rest undisturbed, keep the household routine predictable and introduce unfamiliar experiences gradually. Mats can help provide traction on slippery floors.

Use kind, reward-based training and supervise interactions with children and other pets. Ask the rescue for advice about the individual dog rather than assuming all greyhounds need the same training. The Retired Greyhound Trust offers guidance on topics including commands, small animals, separation anxiety and crate training, and says support remains available after homing. Introducing a resident dog
When possible, RSPCA Australia recommends introducing dogs on neutral ground under supervision. At home, provide separate sleeping and eating spaces, put away items that could trigger conflict and supervise them closely. Do not leave the dogs alone together until you have established that it is safe. Follow the rescue’s instructions for the specific dogs. What should you know about walks, equipment and weather?
Use a leash unless the dog is in a very secure area and has reliable recall. RSPCA Australia advises against extendable leashes and recommends a correctly fitted front-attaching harness rather than a flat collar for walking. It also recommends a basket-style muzzle when a muzzle is required in the owner’s area; that style allows a dog to open its mouth and pant. Check local rules and ask the adoption organization what equipment suits the dog. Muzzle advice is not universal: the Retired Greyhound Trust says its UK adopters receive a muzzle and recommends using one outdoors initially until the adopter is confident around other breeds.

Climate guidance also depends on location and the individual dog. RSPCA Australia says a coat is essential for greyhounds below 15°C, and advises removing it indoors in a warm house or when the dog runs. In hot weather, it recommends shade and cool water, and bringing dogs indoors to air conditioning when temperatures exceed 35°C. Consider your local climate and ask the rescue or veterinarian about the dog’s needs. [RSPCA Australia: What should I know about owning a greyhound?]
How should you plan food and ongoing health care?
Start by feeding the food provided by the adoption centre, unless the rescue or veterinarian advises otherwise. If you change foods, RSPCA Australia recommends making the transition gradually over 7–10 days to reduce the chance of gastrointestinal upset. Choose a balanced commercial food suited to the dog’s life stage and health status.
Review vaccination records and discuss parasite prevention, dental health, nail care, exercise and enrichment with the rescue and a veterinarian. Seek veterinary advice about concerns such as lameness or a possible embedded grass seed; the right response depends on the dog and the symptoms. What should you budget for?
There is no single adoption fee or standard package that applies everywhere. Fees and included care depend on the organization, location and individual animal. RSPCA UK says its fees vary by animal and centre and help contribute to veterinary care, vaccinations, neutering and preparation. Ask for the fee, what it covers and which supplies, documents or services are included before committing. [RSPCA UK: How to Adopt a Pet]
Also plan for recurring food, insurance and veterinary expenses. Their amounts depend on your location, provider and dog; ask local providers and your veterinarian about likely costs for your circumstances.
