Life After Pet Loss: Daily Reflections for Working Through Grief is a year-long reflection book for people grieving a dog, cat, or other animal. The publisher describes daily entries, remembrance ideas, affirmations, and quotations; an independent review by Sally Rosenthal for Best Friends Animal Society calls it compassionate and welcoming to readers with different spiritual backgrounds. Those descriptions make it sound like a steady companion through grief, not a promise to make grief disappear.

What is the book, and what does it offer?

Written by Judith Eve Rosen, LCSW, Life After Pet Loss is designed around a year of daily reflections. Penguin Random House says the entries are intended for people whose grief is fresh or long-standing, and that the book welcomes people grieving dogs, cats, and other animals. Its described contents include suggestions for honoring a pet, affirmations, and quotations. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the book, not evidence of a particular therapeutic result. What does the independent review say?

In a review published June 30, 2026, Sally Rosenthal of Best Friends Animal Society describes the book as compassionate and says it addresses readers regardless of spiritual background. Rosenthal writes: “The beauty of Judith’s approach is that it speaks to all individuals, no matter where they are on their grief journey or whatever their spiritual background.” She also calls it “an important book for anyone grieving an animal companion.” Read Rosenthal’s review at Best Friends Animal Society.

Rosenthal also notes that the book points readers toward resources such as online support and other books. Her review does not identify a particular provider, so readers seeking help beyond a book should look for support services available in their own area.

Who may find it useful?

  • Someone who wants a short, regular prompt for reflecting on pet loss, rather than a one-time guide or a promise of quick relief.
  • Someone grieving any kind of animal companion: the publisher’s stated audience includes dogs, cats, and other animals.
  • Someone who would welcome remembrance ideas and reflective material, while choosing for themselves whether and how to use a suggested ritual.
  • Someone who prefers a book described as agnostic and open to different beliefs, rather than one framed around a single spiritual tradition.

The daily format may not suit every reader. Some people want structured exercises, a specific therapeutic approach, or direct access to a support professional; the available descriptions do not establish that this book provides those things. It is best understood as a reflection resource that may sit alongside other forms of support.

What is known about the author—and what that does not prove

Penguin Random House’s biography describes Rosen as a licensed psychotherapist and LCSW, a Beck Institute CBT Certified Clinician, and a recipient of veterinary social-work certification from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The biography also says she has a virtual private therapy practice and facilitated pet-loss support groups at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center of New York. That background is relevant context for a book about grief, but credentials alone do not show that this title has been clinically tested or produces a specific outcome.
