Aging With Grace: How to Support Your Senior Pet

Aging is not a disease, and changes in an older dog or cat deserve attention. Learn which signs to report, what to track, how to adapt the home, and how AAHA's 2023 senior guidance approaches care.

Supporting an older dog or cat starts with one principle: getting older is not a disease, but it is also not a reason to ignore a change. The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines, published by the American Animal Hospital Association with a landing page dated December 12, 2022 and section pages dated December 13, 2022, frame senior care as a combination of prevention, diagnostic assessment, treatment, pain management, nutrition, home modification, behavior support, and quality-of-life planning. For most owners, that means four practical habits: notice changes early, keep a useful record, bring that record to the veterinarian, and tailor every decision to the individual animal rather than to its age alone.

When is a pet considered senior?

There is no single age that marks senior status for every dog or cat. The AAHA guideline refers to two life-stage definitions as reference points: a 2019 canine definition that places senior status in the last 25% of estimated lifespan, and a 2021 feline definition that applies to cats older than 10 years. These are useful starting points for a conversation with your veterinarian, but they do not replace an assessment of your particular pet. A 9-year-old Great Dane and a 9-year-old Chihuahua are at very different points in their lives, and a healthy 11-year-old cat may be in better condition than a 7-year-old with a chronic illness.

Changes that deserve a veterinary conversation

The most common mistake owners make is treating a change as normal aging and waiting. AAHA’s guidance is clear that age by itself does not explain every shift in behavior, appetite, or movement. The following signs are reasons to contact a veterinarian for an individualized assessment rather than a diagnosis you can make at home:

  • Malaise or lethargy that is progressive, meaning it gets worse over weeks or months rather than fluctuating with the weather or activity
  • Reduced appetite, or a noticeable loss of interest in food
  • Changes in thirst, such as drinking noticeably more or less than before
  • Weight loss over time, even if your pet still eats well
  • Mobility changes, including reluctance to jump, stiffness after rest, slipping, or trouble with stairs
  • Behavior changes, including new irritability, withdrawal, restlessness at night, or altered house-training habits
  • Wounds that do not heal

Any one of these can have many causes, and some are treatable. Chronic disease is the reason AAHA lists these signs together: a single symptom may seem minor, but a pattern across several areas is what prompts a closer look.

What to track at home and bring to the appointment

A good veterinary history is one of the most useful tools a senior pet has, and it depends on what you can tell the veterinary team. AAHA recommends that owners be ready to describe changes in the following areas:

  • Eating and drinking: how much food and water, and whether either has shifted
  • Exercise and movement: how far your pet walks, how it gets up and lies down, and whether it hesitates on stairs or in the car
  • Play: whether toys, games, or greetings have faded
  • Elimination: frequency, straining, accidents, or changes in litter-box use
  • Attitude: alertness, mood, and interaction with people and other animals
  • Grooming: coat condition, and whether your pet still grooms itself, especially hard-to-reach areas
  • Vision and hearing: bumping into objects, hesitating in dim light, or not responding to sounds it once noticed

For each change, note when you first saw it and whether it is getting better, staying the same, or getting worse. Short phone videos are often more informative than a description. AAHA notes that video of your pet walking, climbing, or interacting with its environment can help the veterinary team evaluate a change and later judge whether a treatment is helping. Bring the list and the videos, along with your questions, and do not worry if you cannot answer everything; the record is valuable even when incomplete.

  • SHERPA SOFT & NON-SKID BASE: Want a large dog bed your dog never wants to leave? 200GSM sherpa fleece feels soft and soothing against paws and skin; non-skid dot-grip bottom stays put on hardwood or tile.

How often should a senior pet have a workup?

AAHA describes a medical workup once or twice a year as a recommendation that may apply to many senior pets, not a universal schedule. A workup may include a complete blood count, a chemistry panel, and a urinalysis. The veterinarian chooses which tests to run and how often to repeat them based on your pet’s history, physical examination findings, and body condition. A healthy senior cat with a stable history and a skilled history-taker may need a different plan from a senior dog on medication for a heart condition. Ask your veterinarian what interval makes sense for your pet and what each test is expected to show.

Pain is often quiet

Pain in older animals can look like personality change, stubbornness, or slowing down. Caregivers commonly interpret reduced jumping, hesitation on stairs, reluctance to be touched, or sleeping in new places as normal aging. AAHA emphasizes that changes in behavior or movement can reflect chronic pain, and that the signs can be subtle. Ask your veterinarian to assess pain at each senior visit and to discuss treatment options if a problem is found.

Do not start a prescription, over-the-counter drug, or supplement based on a general article, a friend’s advice, or a product label. Pain medications and supplements interact with other treatments and with underlying disease, and the right choice depends on the animal’s organs, current medications, and the cause of the pain.

Home adaptations that make daily life easier

Small changes in the home can reduce strain and help a senior pet move with more confidence. AAHA names several categories of aids as examples. Choose them to match your pet’s size, abilities, and surroundings, and talk with your veterinarian if pain or declining mobility persists even after you make changes.

Everyday problem Possible adaptation named in AAHA guidance What to check before you buy or install
Getting onto a bed, couch, or car Ramp Slope, width, and surface grip for your pet’s size; whether your pet will use it consistently; not stated for specific models
Slipping on hard floors Rugs or yoga mats for traction Whether the mat slides on your flooring; secure edges so the mat does not catch paws
Lifting a larger dog Fitted, padded harness used to help lift the pet Fit against the body; that handling method should be shown to you by your veterinarian or a trained professional if your pet is in pain
Resting comfortably Suitable bed Support and firmness for your pet’s joints and size; whether it is easy to get in and out of
Using the litter box Careful placement and design Low entry or step-in access; placement on the same floor as your pet’s usual rest area; avoiding long walks through other rooms

These aids address the task, not the cause. A ramp can help a cat with arthritis reach a windowsill, but it does not treat arthritis. Keep the same principle in mind for every change: the aid makes life easier while the veterinarian manages the underlying condition.

Nutrition and body condition

Food labeled “senior” is not a substitute for an individual nutrition plan. AAHA notes that energy and nutritional needs can change with age and disease. Body and muscle condition, species, age, and any existing illness all influence what a particular pet should eat. Track your pet’s weight and muscle over time, and ask the veterinarian to score body condition at each visit. If weight is falling, muscle is wasting, or appetite is changing, discuss diet before switching foods, adding supplements, or changing the amount offered.

Two figures in the AAHA guidance

Two numbers appear in the AAHA guidance, and both should be cited with their source and year:

  • Senior dogs and cats make up 44% of the pet population. This is a figure reported on AAHA’s 2023 guideline page. The underlying survey or denominator is not described in the guidance page itself, so present it as AAHA’s reported figure rather than an independent measurement.
  • More than 60% of cats have osteoarthritis in at least one joint. AAHA’s healthy-senior evaluation section reports this figure from the studies it references. Many affected cats show little or no crepitus, the grating sensation sometimes felt on examination, so a normal joint feel does not rule out arthritis. The figure comes from the cited studies; AAHA did not conduct them.

How to weigh a treatment decision

There is no single best treatment for an older pet, and AAHA stresses individualized planning. When your veterinarian offers a choice, consider these four questions together:

  1. What is the expected benefit for this pet, and how confident is the veterinarian about it?
  2. What is the burden, including pills, handling, stress, travel, and time?
  3. What is the cost over the months ahead?
  4. What does this option mean for daily comfort and quality of life?

Answering these questions with your veterinarian often leads to a plan that fits your household, your budget, and your pet’s temperament, rather than a plan built around age alone.
