A six-day guided tour from 20–25 September 2025 began and ended in Alice Springs and visited local sites, Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park and Erldunda. Andrew Walker’s Birding Ecotours report says the group saw 94 bird species. That is a record of one group in one season, not a forecast for every visitor.

The report is most useful when read alongside habitat guidance from Parks Australia and local information for Alice Springs: start early, match likely birds to spinifex, mulga, sand plains and creeklines, and verify current access before setting out.

What the September 2025 report covers

The documented trip ran from 20 to 25 September 2025, with Alice Springs as both the starting and finishing point. Birding took place around Alice Springs, inside Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park and at Erldunda. The report describes a guided tour rather than a permanent itinerary, abundance survey or guarantee of repeat sightings.

Its headline result is 94 species seen by that touring group during those six days. The number belongs to that particular route, dates, weather, guide team and observation effort. A future visit can produce a different list even if it follows similar roads and trails.

Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa is Anangu-owned and jointly managed with the Australian Government. Use the Aṉangu place names and follow park guidance when visiting. The park guide notes that many Aṉangu bird names are based on the birds’ calls, an important reminder that local knowledge is part of the landscape rather than an afterthought.

Bird highlights recorded by the tour

The report’s notable birds span ground birds, raptors, parrots, honeyeaters, chats, robins and grassland specialists. The following are reported observations from that tour.

Open country and spinifex birds

  • Spinifex Pigeon: a signature arid-country bird and one of the report’s Red Centre highlights.
  • Australian Bustard: a large, conspicuous species of open country.
  • Spinifexbird: closely tied by name and ecology to spinifex habitat.
  • Dusky Grasswren: a skulking spinifex specialist that rewards slow scanning and patient listening.
  • Rufous-crowned Emu-wren: another small, difficult-to-detect bird associated with dense grasses and spinifex.
  • Banded Whiteface: a compact arid-zone passerine included among the tour’s notable records.
  • Zebra Finch: a familiar finch of dry country, often easier to find where suitable cover and water are nearby.

Raptors and other large birds

  • Wedge-tailed Eagle: the report’s large soaring raptor highlight.
  • Black Falcon: a fast-flying falcon recorded during the trip.

Kingfishers, bee-eaters and woodland birds

  • Red-backed Kingfisher: one of the creekline-associated species highlighted for the park.
  • Rainbow Bee-eater: another creekline and open-air insect hunter.
  • Western Bowerbird: a distinctive Central Australian bowerbird.
  • Grey-headed Honeyeater: a mulga-associated honeyeater named in both the tour highlights and park habitat guidance.
  • Hooded Robin: a woodland and open-forest species among the report’s observations.

Parrots, cockatoos and chats

  • Pink Cockatoo: one of the striking sand-plain and open-country possibilities listed in the park guidance.
  • Budgerigar: a classic inland parrot associated with spinifex country.
  • Mulga Parrot: a characteristic bird of the arid interior.
  • Crimson Chat: a colourful bird of open sandy habitats.

Some of these species are conspicuous, while others are easy to miss without a guide who knows calls, microhabitats and feeding behaviour. Treat the list as a set of realistic targets for the region, not as a promised checklist.

Where Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa birds fit in the landscape

Parks Australia recommends early-morning birdwatching and specifically advises quiet, patience and alertness. Its visitor guidance says, “But the best time to see birds in Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa is early in the morning.” Habitat is the next useful filter: instead of searching every plant community at once, choose a habitat and work it slowly.

Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.

Spinifex

Park guidance links spinifex with Zebra Finches, Budgerigars and Dusky Grasswrens. Walk edges rather than pushing through dense clumps, pause frequently, and listen before moving. Small birds may reveal themselves through contact calls or brief flights between clumps.

Mulga woodland

Mulga habitat is associated in the park guide with Splendid Fairy-wrens, Red-capped Robins and Grey-headed Honeyeaters. The first two species were not included in the tour’s published notable list, so they should be treated as habitat-based possibilities rather than tour records. Scan shaded branches, ground margins and open gaps beneath trees.

Sand plains

Crimson Chats and Pink Cockatoos are the park’s sand-plain examples. Broad views help with larger or more mobile birds, while low shrubs and scattered vegetation deserve closer attention for small passerines.

Kata Tjuṯa creeklines

Parks Australia identifies creeklines around Kata Tjuṯa as places to look for Red-backed Kingfishers and Rainbow Bee-eaters. Creeklines can concentrate activity compared with uniform dry ground, but bird movement changes with season and recent conditions.

Birding around Alice Springs and nearby regional sites

Tourism Northern Territory describes around 180 bird species in habitats surrounding Alice Springs. That figure is the tourism authority’s regional description, not the count from the September tour and not a direct comparison with the park totals.

Stop or area Setting and reason to include it Access or distance information established in the sources
Telegraph Station A named Alice Springs birding option for exploring local habitat close to town. Current opening, trail and access details are not stated; check official visitor information.
Olive Pink Botanic Gardens A town-based site where native plantings can provide a different birding context from open desert. Current access conditions are not stated; verify before travel.
Alice Springs Desert Park A local option specifically identified for birding and a practical place to connect with regional natural-history information. Current opening hours, entry conditions and programs are not stated; confirm directly.
Finke River system The regional source identifies it as a setting for waterbirds, adding a riverine perspective to an otherwise arid itinerary. Specific access points and current conditions are not stated.
Tjoritja / West MacDonnell ranges A broader regional destination named among Central Australian birding possibilities. Road, trail and site conditions are not stated; consult current official information.
East MacDonnell ranges Another regional option for extending birding beyond Alice Springs town sites. Current access and opening information are not stated.
Erldunda Included in the September 2025 guided tour, making it part of the documented route. The report does not establish a current access schedule or a separate Erldunda species list.

The source material identifies these destinations but does not provide reliable current distances, road conditions, fees or opening times. Plan them as categories of outing—town site, park walk or longer regional drive—until you confirm the operational details.

How to plan a similar birding day

  1. Choose the scale of outing. Decide whether you want a walk near Alice Springs, a Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa park session or a longer regional trip. Keep a separate plan for Erldunda or the MacDonnell ranges rather than assuming every stop has the same facilities.
  2. Schedule the first observation period early. The park’s own guidance prioritises early morning. Arrive ready to listen and scan before activity becomes harder to follow later in the day.
  3. Select a target habitat. Use spinifex for Zebra Finch, Budgerigar and Dusky Grasswren possibilities; mulga for woodland species; sand plains for Crimson Chat and Pink Cockatoo possibilities; and Kata Tjuṯa creeklines for Red-backed Kingfisher and Rainbow Bee-eater possibilities.
  4. Move quietly and stop often. Parks Australia’s advice is simple—quiet, patience and alertness. Short stationary watches at habitat edges are more productive than constant walking.
  5. Record evidence, not assumptions. Note the time, habitat, behaviour and vocal clues. If you are uncertain, mark the record as tentative until you can check a field guide or compare the call.
  6. Check conditions immediately before travel. Confirm park notices, road and trail status, fees, attraction hours and any tour requirements through current official channels. The 2025 report cannot establish what is open now.

Understanding the different species totals

Several official pages use different counts for the park and region. Parks Australia says 178 bird species have been recorded in Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park; that page was checked on 13 October 2026 and displays no publication date. The Australian Government heritage page describes the park as home to more than 150 bird species; it was also checked on 13 October 2026 and likewise has no displayed publication date. Tourism Northern Territory describes around 180 species in habitats around Alice Springs, with the page checked on 13 October 2026.

Those statements use different wording, geographic framing and, on the pages reviewed, no reconciled counting method or common survey date. Do not add them together or rank them as if they measured the same thing. The 94-species tour tally is a separate observation result from a defined six-day visit.

Practical identification and recording advice

When small birds vanish into cover

Return to the same patch, reduce movement and listen for repeated calls. Spinifex specialists such as Dusky Grasswren and Spinifexbird may be detected before they are seen. Watching the edges of cover can reveal where birds cross between feeding and sheltering areas.

When several parrots look alike at a distance

Write down flight pattern, flock size, call and habitat before naming the species. Budgerigars and Mulga Parrots occupy the same broad region but can behave differently; a careful note is more useful than an overconfident tick.

When a raptor passes too quickly

Record wing shape, soaring style, apparent size and direction. Wedge-tailed Eagles and Black Falcons are both memorable records, but a fleeting silhouette may not provide enough detail for a firm identification.

When the day produces fewer birds than expected

Change habitat rather than simply walking farther. Move from uniform ground to a creekline, mulga edge or water-associated site identified in the local guidance, and keep the tour list in perspective: it reflects one guided group’s effort, not a minimum for every day.

Local birding community and preparation

BirdLife Central Australia is the local BirdLife Australia group based in Alice Springs. Its page lists monthly meetings at Alice Springs Desert Park on the fourth Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Meeting schedules can change, so verify the date and venue before attending. A local group can also help visitors understand current conditions, recent sightings and respectful access, but no meeting schedule should be assumed without confirmation.

A regional field guide is a sensible preparation tool because the trip involves many similar-looking arid birds and the park provides bird information and a checklist. The available information does not independently endorse a particular book, tour operator or commercial service.

What this report can—and cannot—tell you

  • It documents a six-day September 2025 experience beginning and ending in Alice Springs.
  • It gives a concrete set of Red Centre species to learn before travelling.
  • It shows why habitat-based planning is more useful than searching randomly across the desert.
  • It does not predict your species total, establish current road or trail access, or replace park notices.
  • It does not reconcile the different official descriptions of total bird diversity in the park and Alice Springs region.

For a visitor, the most defensible takeaway is practical: use early morning, quiet observation and habitat targeting as your starting method; treat every species as a possibility; and confirm current conditions with the relevant official site before leaving Alice Springs.
