Breed organizations describe these cats as adaptable and generally easygoing, but each cat has its own temperament and care needs. Their coat is relatively easy to maintain, and regular play, measured feeding and routine veterinary care support a healthy home life.

These are broad breed descriptions, not guarantees for every cat. A cat’s temperament and care needs also reflect its individual history, socialization and home environment. TICA and CFA provide breed profiles and standards.
History and breed development
Shorthaired cats accompanied settlers to North America on ships, where they helped control rodents. As settlers moved west, cats also protected farms and homes from vermin. This broad history describes the development of working cats; it does not prove the documented lineage of every modern American Shorthair.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) reports that more than 50 American Shorthairs were present at the first cat show held in the United States in 1895, and that the breed was among the first five recognized by CFA at its founding in 1906. Cats were originally shown as “Domestic Shorthairs.” CFA dates the change to the name “American Shorthair” to 1965; TICA describes the renaming more broadly as occurring in the early 1960s.

The modern American Shorthair is a recognized pedigree breed with a defined type. A random-bred short-haired cat can be an excellent pet, but it is not automatically an American Shorthair simply because it has a striped coat or was born in the United States.
Appearance and size
American Shorthairs are muscular, balanced cats with a substantial build. CFA describes the breed as medium to large, while TICA emphasizes its medium-sized, muscular and balanced appearance. Breed standards describe show type; individual household pets may not match every idealized feature.
The breed has a short, dense coat with a firm or hard texture. Silver and brown classic tabbies are popular examples, but the breed appears in many colors and patterns. CFA reports more than 100 color combinations; that count is attributed to CFA and is not a measure of how common each one is.
Temperament: friendly, steady and independent
TICA describes American Shorthairs as good-natured, easygoing, adaptable and people-oriented while retaining some independence. CFA describes them as affectionate, playful, intelligent and tolerant of children and other animals. These are breed tendencies, not promises about an individual cat.
Many enjoy sitting near their people and accepting attention on their own terms. Some are lap cats; others prefer to sit beside you rather than be held for long periods. Regular interactive games can give an outlet to the breed’s hunting instinct. Feather and wand games are options, not required purchases.

American Shorthairs can be good family cats when children learn appropriate handling. Teach children to let the cat approach, avoid pulling its tail or restraining it, and stop interacting when it shows signs of stress. Introduce other pets thoughtfully and supervise interactions as appropriate.
Individual cats vary in how vocal they are and how much attention they want. Consider changes in behavior in context rather than assuming every trait is determined by breed.
Daily care and grooming
Brushing
The short coat is relatively easy to care for, but American Shorthairs shed. TICA says a comb can be used as needed to remove dead hair and notes that weekly combing can suffice for ordinary, non-show care. CFA recommends daily brushing in its breed profile. Adjust grooming frequency to your cat’s shedding and coat condition; a cat comb or grooming mitt is an optional tool.

Claws, teeth and ears
- Trim the claws as needed and provide a scratching post.
- Brush the teeth with pet toothpaste approved for cats, if your cat will tolerate it.
- Check the ears and clean them as needed using a veterinarian-approved product.
These are general cat-care practices, not special medical needs unique to American Shorthairs. Follow your veterinarian’s advice about products and care.

Feeding and exercise
Choose food and portions based on your cat’s life stage, body condition and individual needs, with veterinary advice when needed. The reviewed breed sources do not establish a breed-specific calorie target, fixed feeding amount or named food recommendation. Keep fresh water available; TICA notes that some owners may place a water bowl away from food.
Offer regular interactive activity. CFA describes feather and wand games as ways to engage the breed’s hunting instinct. Other suitable enrichment can include toys the cat can chase, food puzzles, scratching structures and climbing furniture. Rotate toys so familiar objects continue to attract interest.

Provide indoor cats with clean litter boxes, fresh water, resting places and safe spaces to retreat. A cat tree or window perch can add opportunities for movement and stimulation.
Health considerations
CFA says the American Shorthair is “not currently known for any breed-specific health problems.” This is CFA’s breed-profile statement, not a guarantee that an individual cat will remain healthy. TICA recommends regular veterinary visits, and routine care can help address an individual cat’s needs.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
CFA reports that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) was observed in some American Shorthairs in the 1980s and 1990s, and says preventive testing and selective breeding helped reduce its presence. That account does not mean the breed cannot develop HCM or that any cat is permanently clear of heart disease. Discuss relevant family history, symptoms or testing questions with a veterinarian.

Weight and general well-being
Monitor your cat’s body condition and discuss weight changes with a veterinarian. The reviewed sources do not establish a breed-specific weight range or a comprehensive health-screening schedule. Ask your veterinarian what preventive care is appropriate for your cat’s age and health.

Dental care
Include dental care in routine veterinary discussions. Ask your veterinarian about your cat’s teeth and gums and whether home care or professional assessment is appropriate.
Is the American Shorthair hypoallergenic?
The reviewed breed sources do not establish that American Shorthairs are hypoallergenic. A short coat alone should not be treated as proof that a cat is suitable for someone with allergies. If allergies are a concern, spend time with the specific cat and discuss symptoms with a medical professional.

If you want a pedigreed American Shorthair, registry breeder-finding resources from TICA and CFA can be starting points. TICA says listed member breeders have signed its Code of Ethics; registry membership alone does not guarantee health or breeding quality.
Ask a breeder about:
- the parents’ temperaments and health history;
- veterinary records and any relevant testing;
- how kittens were socialized;
- the kitten’s diet and care so far;
- registration and pedigree paperwork;
- the written contract and return policy.
Rescue organizations and shelters may also have cats that resemble American Shorthairs. Unless pedigree records are available, describe such a cat as an American Shorthair-type or domestic shorthair rather than assuming its breed.

Who is this breed best for?
An American Shorthair may suit someone looking for a companion described by breed organizations as adaptable, affectionate and relatively independent. The breed can live in different kinds of homes, provided the cat receives appropriate daily care, play and enrichment.
Temperament varies, and no breed label guarantees that a cat will enjoy being carried, need little interaction or have a particular activity level. Consider the individual cat and household fit when choosing a companion.
