Thomson’s gazelles can reach up to 40 miles per hour, while other species are notable for large herds, desert water strategies, or unusual alarm adaptations.
Here are eight research-backed facts about gazelles, with species named where the evidence is specific.
1. Thomson’s gazelles can reach 40 miles per hour
National Geographic reports that Thomson’s gazelles can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. That figure applies to this species; it should not be treated as a verified top speed for every gazelle. Gazelles live in open habitats where detecting danger and moving quickly can help them avoid predators.
2. Thomson’s gazelles can gather in large herds
Thomson’s gazelle herds may range from around ten animals to several hundred, according to National Geographic. Large aggregations can form during the rainy season. Herd size and grouping patterns vary across species and conditions.

3. What do gazelles eat? It depends on the species and habitat
Gazelles eat different plants according to what grows where they live. Thomson’s gazelles browse grasses, shoots, and leaves. Dama gazelles eat desert shrubs, acacias, and rough desert grasses, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.
These examples show why there is no single gazelle diet: food choices vary with habitat and species.
4. Some desert gazelles get much of their water from food
Dama gazelles obtain most of their water from the plants they eat, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Mountain gazelles can also use succulent plants and dew as water sources, according to Animal Diversity Web. These are examples of species-specific strategies, not a rule for every gazelle.
5. Gazelles may leap with all four feet off the ground
Some gazelles perform a high, stiff-legged leap known as stotting. The Smithsonian describes the behavior as a gazelle trait. The research sources here do not establish one universal explanation for why gazelles stott, so it is best not to assume every leap has the same purpose.

6. Speke’s gazelle has an unusual alarm adaptation
When alarmed, skin on top of a Speke’s gazelle’s nose inflates, amplifying its honking alarm call, according to the Los Angeles Zoo. This distinctive adaptation is specific to Speke’s gazelle; it should not be generalized to all gazelles.
7. Where do gazelles live? Across plains, mountains, and deserts
Gazelle habitats include open plains, mountains, deserts, and semi-desert landscapes. Thomson’s gazelles frequent open plains. Some species use mountainous or desert environments, while Speke’s gazelles occur on open semi-desert plateaus in Somalia.
Those differences in habitat help explain why gazelles can vary in their food and water strategies.
8. Some gazelle species face severe conservation pressure
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute describes the dama gazelle as critically endangered and estimates that fewer than 400 remain in the wild, primarily in Chad and Sudan. The page does not provide a census date, so this should be understood as the source’s estimate rather than a new population count.
