The American Wirehair is a relatively rare American cat breed known for a short, dense, springy coat with hairs that may be crimped, hooked, or bent. These cats are generally described as gentle, adaptable, playful, and people-oriented; grooming is usually modest, but excessive brushing can damage or relax the coat’s wired texture.
Coat feel, sociability, and health history vary between individuals, so prospective owners should look beyond photographs and broad breed descriptions. Ask breeders about coat variation, veterinary records, and health screening, and expect that finding a kitten may take patience.
Key takeaways
- The American Wirehair’s defining feature is a short, dense, springy coat of crimped, hooked, or bent hairs.
- The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s 2025–26 standard assigns 45 of 100 points to the coat, making it the breed’s most important show characteristic.
- American Wirehairs are usually gentle, adaptable, curious, playful, and people-oriented, but individual sociability and lap-cat behavior vary.
- Grooming is generally limited; excessive brushing or combing can damage or relax the wired texture.

- American Wirehairs are relatively rare, so finding one may require contacting multiple breeders, waiting, traveling, or considering an adult cat.
What is special about an American Wirehair cat?
The defining feature of the American Wirehair is its unusual coat. Each hair may be crimped, hooked, or bent, creating a short, dense, springy texture that can feel crisp, coarse, fuzzy, or like steel wool. The wired texture may also appear in the whiskers and ear hair, although coats vary considerably between individual cats.
An American Wirehair is not simply an American Shorthair with curly fur. The breeds share a broadly similar American-type body and personality, but the Wirehair’s individual hair structure gives it a distinctive resilient or “wired” feel. Some American Wirehairs have softer, sparser, or less strongly wired coats, and a recognized straight-coated variation also exists.

- REDUCES DANDER AND FLAKING BETWEEN BATHS: Each wipe lifts loose dander and skin flakes from the coat surface during grooming, helping manage allergen levels and visible flaking without requiring a full water bath.
- COLLOIDAL OAT FLOUR SOOTHES DRY SKIN: Colloidal oat flour is a dermatologist-recognized skin-soothing ingredient; included in these wipes to help calm dry, irritated feline skin and support a softer, more comfortable coat.
- ALOE HELPS CONDITION AND HYDRATE COAT: Aloe provides additional moisture to the coat and skin during wiping, supporting hydration on cats prone to dryness, flakiness, or seasonal skin sensitivity between bathing sessions.
- FRAGRANCE-FREE FOR FELINE SENSITIVITY: Unscented formula avoids artificial fragrances that cats may find irritating; suitable for households with scent-sensitive cats, multi-cat homes, and cats used near allergy-prone family members.
- PH BALANCED FOR FELINE SKIN: Formulated with a pH suited to cats rather than humans or dogs, helping avoid over-drying and maintaining the skin barrier during regular between-bath grooming and dander management routines.
American Wirehair appearance and breed standard
The American Wirehair has a balanced, muscular body, a rounded or broad head, prominent cheekbones, a well-developed muzzle and chin, large rounded eyes, medium-sized ears, proportionate legs, rounded paws, and a tapering tail with a rounded tip. CFA describes the breed as medium to large, while TICA describes a medium-sized, athletic build; males are generally larger than females.
The coat matters more than any single color or pattern. In the CFA 2025–26 American Wirehair standard, the coat receives 45 points, the head 25 points, type 20 points, and coat and eye color 10 points. These weights explain why “curly” is an incomplete description: the standard emphasizes springiness, density, resilience, and the crimped, hooked, or bent structure of the hairs.
| Feature | American Wirehair | American Shorthair |
|---|---|---|
| Coat | Short, springy wired coat with crimped, hooked, or bent hairs; straight-coated variation also occurs | Conventional short coat |
| Texture | May feel crisp, coarse, fuzzy, stiff, woolly, dense, or comparatively soft | More familiar short-haired texture |
| Grooming approach | Usually limited; excessive brushing may relax or damage the wired texture | Routine short-coat maintenance is generally more conventional |
| Body and head | American-type balanced body and head | American-type balanced body and head |
| Availability | Relatively rare and potentially difficult to locate | Generally easier to encounter, although availability varies |
| Personality | Usually gentle, adaptable, curious, playful, and people-oriented | Broadly similar family-cat qualities, with individual variation |
The table describes breed tendencies rather than guarantees. A cat’s socialization, age, health, upbringing, and home environment can matter as much as its pedigree.
What does an American Wirehair coat feel like?
An American Wirehair coat can feel crisp, fuzzy, coarse, or stiff rather than uniformly curly. CFA compares the texture to steel wool, while TICA says the degree of wiring may range from spiked to curly. The breed’s identity comes from the structure and resilience of individual hairs, not from one consistent curl pattern.

Two American Wirehairs can feel noticeably different even when both are correctly associated with the breed. One may have a dense, springy, resilient coat; another may feel softer, woollier, harder, or sparser. Coat condition can also change, so a kitten’s coat should not be treated as a guarantee of an ideal show-quality adult coat.
Why do some American Wirehair kittens have straight coats?
Some American Wirehair kittens have straight coats because CFA describes the wired trait as dominant but semi-penetrating, or incompletely dominant. A wire-to-straight breeding does not produce wired kittens every time, and even wire-to-wire breeding can produce straight-coated offspring.
A straight-coated kitten may still be associated with the American Wirehair breeding program and can be a legitimate pet option, but it should not be represented as having the same visible wired coat as a strongly textured show cat. Ask the breeder about the parents’ coats, the kitten’s current texture, registration status, and how the contract treats straight-coated offspring.

Are American Wirehair cats good pets?
American Wirehair cats are often good pets for families, people living alone, older adults, and homes with other animals. The breed is generally described as gentle, adaptable, affectionate, and comfortable participating in family life without demanding constant attention.

TICA describes the American Wirehair as good-natured, easy-going, intelligent, curious, people-oriented, and adaptable. CFA similarly describes the breed as affectionate and even-tempered, with enough independence to tolerate being left alone during the day. These are useful tendencies, not promises about every individual cat.
Typical American Wirehair behavior
- Affection: Some cats are lap cats, while others prefer sitting close to a person or following household activity.
- Play: Many remain playful into adulthood and enjoy interactive games.
- Curiosity: An intelligent Wirehair may investigate cabinets, drawers, food, windows, and household activity.
- Hunting interest: Insects and moving objects may attract the breed’s attention.
- Social flexibility: Many can adapt to children and other pets when introductions are gradual and appropriately supervised.
- Independence: The breed may enjoy companionship without requiring uninterrupted physical contact.
Prospective owners who require a guaranteed lap cat, a completely non-shedding cat, or a cat with a fixed personality should choose based on the individual animal as well as the breed description.
Do American Wirehair cats need a lot of grooming?
American Wirehair cats usually need modest rather than intensive grooming. CFA states, “American Wirehairs are one of the easiest of all breeds to groom.” TICA’s more specific warning is important: less grooming is generally better because excessive brushing or combing can damage the wired texture or relax the curl.
American Wirehairs shed. CFA says an occasional bath may help reduce loose hair and notes that some owners find a rolling lint collector nearly as effective as a bath. CFA recommends towel drying after a bath and keeping the cat warm until dry; blow-drying is unnecessary.

Avoid the eyes and irritated skin, and follow a veterinarian’s or breeder’s advice for a cat with sensitivity or an oily coat.
A practical Wirehair grooming routine
- Inspect the coat periodically for dirt, oil, mats, skin redness, parasites, or areas the cat is licking excessively.
- Use a gentle, limited grooming method rather than automatically brushing every day.
- Use a cat-safe bath only when the coat is dirty, oily, or otherwise needs cleaning; towel-dry and keep the cat warm until dry.
- Trim the nails regularly and provide a stable scratching post.
- Brush the teeth with a veterinarian-approved cat toothpaste and arrange routine veterinary examinations.
- Contact a veterinarian about persistent itching, odor, hair loss, redness, or unusual oiliness.
The wired coat should not be handled like an ordinary short coat simply because it is short. Frequent combing may make the coat look or feel less characteristic.

Are American Wirehairs healthy?
American Wirehairs are generally considered hardy, but “generally healthy” does not mean disease-free or risk-free. CFA reports no health problems considered characteristic of the breed and says many breeders use genetic testing and may screen breeding cats with echocardiograms to help prevent hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Vetstreet takes a more cautious approach, noting that the breed may develop problems associated with American Shorthairs, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM.
Vetstreet’s American Wirehair health reference describes an echocardiogram as a way to confirm HCM. An echocardiogram is a veterinary diagnostic or screening procedure, not a test every owner should order solely because a cat is an American Wirehair. A veterinarian should advise on testing based on the individual cat, family history, symptoms, and clinical findings.
What should a buyer ask about health?
- What veterinary records will accompany the kitten or adult cat?
- What health screening has been performed on both parents?
- Has echocardiography or genetic testing been performed, and what exactly did each test evaluate?
- What does the written health guarantee cover, and what are its exclusions and time limits?
- What is the breeder’s return policy if the buyer can no longer keep the cat?
Breed-level information cannot diagnose an individual cat. A breeder’s health claims should be supported by documentation, and symptoms or individual-risk questions belong with a veterinarian.
Where did the American Wirehair come from?
The American Wirehair began as an American natural mutation rather than as a breed created from a planned cross. CFA places the defining mutation in a 1966 litter of barn cats in upstate New York. One surviving wire-haired kitten, Council Rock Farms Adam of Hi-Fi, became the foundation cat, and Joan O’Shea helped establish the breed.
Adam produced both wired- and straight-coated offspring. The breed was developed using the American Shorthair as the closest matching type. CFA’s American Wirehair history article states that the breed was first accepted for registration in 1967 and received championship status in 1978. These are historical milestones, not current popularity or population figures.
How rare is the American Wirehair?
The American Wirehair is relatively rare and is described by CFA as a minority breed. Reliable current population totals and annual registration figures were not established in the reviewed authoritative sources, so a numerical population estimate would be misleading.

How can you find an American Wirehair breeder?
Start with breed organizations and then evaluate the individual breeder rather than treating a directory listing as an endorsement. TICA provides a breeder-browsing resource with American Wirehair as a selectable breed. CFA and TICA resources can also help prospective owners learn the standard and identify cat-show or breed-community contacts.
Before sending a deposit, ask to see registration documentation, veterinary records, parent health information, the written contract, and the kitten’s socialization arrangements. Ask specifically whether the kitten is wired-coated or straight-coated, because a photograph may not communicate the texture accurately.
| Breeder question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the kitten wired-coated or straight-coated? | Coat texture varies, and a straight-coated kitten should not be marketed as a strongly wired show cat. |
| What screening was performed on the parents? | “Healthy” is too broad; buyers need to know whether records, echocardiography, or genetic testing exist and what they assessed. |
| How were the kittens socialized? | Early handling and household experience can influence how an individual cat responds to people and other pets. |
| What does the contract cover? | The health guarantee, exclusions, registration terms, and return policy should be clear before purchase. |
| What happens if the cat cannot remain in the buyer’s home? | A responsible breeder should explain the return or rehoming process. |
What does an American Wirehair need at home?
An American Wirehair needs the same basic responsible care as other indoor cats: complete nutrition appropriate to age and activity, fresh water, veterinary examinations, dental care, nail care, safe resting spaces, scratching opportunities, and daily opportunities for play and exploration.
Interactive toys, climbing or observation areas, and puzzle-style food activities can suit a curious, athletic cat, but no particular toy is uniquely required by the breed. Introduce other pets gradually, supervise interactions with children, and give the cat a quiet retreat where it can rest undisturbed.
Is the American Wirehair hypoallergenic?
No reliable conclusion in the reviewed breed sources establishes the American Wirehair as hypoallergenic. The American Wirehair sheds, and unusual coat texture is not the same as being allergy-free. People with allergies should spend time with an individual cat before making a commitment and discuss allergy management with an appropriate health professional.
Who is an American Wirehair best suited to?
The American Wirehair may suit someone who wants a friendly, playful, intelligent companion with an unusual coat and a relatively simple grooming routine. The breed can fit families with children, homes with other pets, older adults, and people who live alone when the individual cat’s temperament and the household’s introduction plan are appropriate.
The breed may be a poor match for someone who wants a guaranteed lap cat, a completely non-shedding pet, frequent brushing, or an immediately available kitten. The realistic expectations are limited grooming rather than no grooming, moderate shedding rather than no shedding, and breed tendencies rather than guaranteed behavior.

FAQ
Are American Wirehair cats good pets?
American Wirehair cats are usually friendly, adaptable, playful, and people-oriented, and many do well with children and other pets. Individual behavior still depends on socialization, age, health, and home environment.
Do American Wirehair cats need a lot of grooming?
American Wirehair cats usually need limited grooming, not intensive daily brushing. Excessive brushing or combing can damage or relax the wired texture, so occasional gentle cleaning is generally preferable.
Why does an American Wirehair kitten have a straight coat?
A straight-coated American Wirehair kitten can result from the breed’s incompletely dominant, semi-penetrating wired trait. The kitten may be a legitimate pet option, but it should not be represented as having the same visible wired coat as a strongly textured show cat.
Are American Wirehair cats hypoallergenic?
The reviewed authoritative sources do not establish the American Wirehair as hypoallergenic. The breed sheds, and a wired coat should not be confused with an allergy-free coat.
Where can I find an American Wirehair breeder?
Prospective owners can begin with CFA and TICA breed resources and TICA’s breeder-browsing tool, then evaluate each breeder’s records, screening practices, socialization, contract, health guarantee, and return policy. The breed is relatively rare, so waiting or traveling may be necessary.
The Bottom Line
The American Wirehair is special because of the structure of its coat: crimped, hooked, or bent hairs create a springy wired texture that varies from cat to cat. The breed is usually gentle, adaptable, playful, and relatively easy to groom, but owners should groom lightly, avoid hypoallergenic claims, verify breeder health documentation, and expect that finding one may require patience or travel.
