Amoxicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that a veterinarian may prescribe for a cat when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed and the bacteria are susceptible to it. U.S. labels for two veterinary products list feline uses and dosing directions, but those label directions are not a dose for your individual cat: follow the prescription and instructions for the product dispensed to you.
What is amoxicillin used for in cats?
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, not a general treatment for symptoms. The U.S. veterinary labels for Amoxi-Tabs and Amoxi-Drop list feline uses involving upper respiratory, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, skin and soft-tissue infections. The organisms listed differ by formulation. The Amoxi-Tabs label specifies susceptible bacteria associated with particular infections, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis and Pasteurella multocida. The Amoxi-Drop label has its own organism list.

Not every cough, runny nose, urinary problem, bout of diarrhea or wound is caused by bacteria that amoxicillin can treat. The labels note that penicillinase can inactivate the drug and that some bacteria are resistant; they advise appropriate culture and susceptibility testing. A veterinarian determines whether an antibiotic is appropriate and which treatment fits the suspected infection.

The U.S. labels for both Amoxi-Tabs and Amoxi-Drop state a feline dose of 50 mg (5–10 mg/lb) once daily. They describe a 5–7 day course or continuing for 48 hours after symptoms have subsided. These are label directions for those specific products, not individualized instructions. Give only the dose and duration prescribed by your cat’s veterinarian; do not calculate a dose from the label or change the schedule yourself. The Amoxi-Tabs label says that if there is no improvement after 5 days, the diagnosis should be reviewed and therapy changed.

Plain amoxicillin labels state that use is restricted to or by order of a licensed veterinarian. FDA likewise explains the prescription requirement for a related amoxicillin/clavulanate suspension because veterinary expertise is needed to diagnose bacterial infections and select treatment. The labels do not establish that one form is more effective, easier to give or better tolerated than the other. The veterinarian or pharmacy can tell you which form and administration instructions apply to your cat.

What are the side effects of amoxicillin in cats?
The cited U.S. labels identify allergic reactions as a potential adverse reaction and contraindicate use in animals with a history of penicillin allergy. The label information cited here does not quantify how often allergic reactions occur or provide a complete list of routine feline adverse effects. If your cat develops concerning symptoms while taking the medicine, contact the prescribing veterinarian for advice. For a suspected allergic reaction or rapidly worsening condition, seek veterinary care promptly.

No. Do not give leftover medication or medication prescribed for another animal. The cause of a new illness may differ, the bacteria may not be susceptible, and the appropriate product, dose and duration depend on the veterinarian’s assessment. Contact your veterinarian rather than reusing a previous prescription.

What to confirm with the veterinarian
- The exact product and formulation, and the dose and schedule prescribed for your cat.
- How long to give it and what to do if a dose is missed or your cat’s condition changes.
- Whether your cat has a penicillin allergy or any other relevant medical history.
- For liquid, how to administer and store the dispensed bottle, and when to discard it.
