Yes. Cats can be therapy animals in structured visits when the cat is comfortable with people and unfamiliar settings, is healthy enough to participate, and has a handler prepared to support it. The evidence for benefits is encouraging but limited: a 2023 report gathered perceptions from handlers and facility staff; it did not establish that visits cause clinical improvement. Therapy-cat registration also does not give a cat general public-access rights.
What therapy cats may offer—and what the evidence shows
Therapy-cat visits can provide comfort and encourage connection in settings such as hospitals, schools, libraries, assisted-living facilities, workplaces and community events. A facility must invite and approve the team, and the setting should suit the cat as well as the people it visits.

The most detailed cat-specific report cited here, Exploring the Cat-Human Bond, was published by Pet Partners and Cat Person in 2023. It gathered 63 cat-handler survey responses and 13 facility-contact survey responses, plus interviews with 29 handlers and 7 facility contacts. The report itself describes cat-assisted-intervention research as limited. Its selected, small sample and nonexperimental design cannot show that therapy-cat visits cause health improvements.

| Reported outcome | Handlers | Facility contacts |
|---|---|---|
| Perceived decrease in anxiety | 73% | 81% |
| Perceived decrease in loneliness | 83% | 75% |
| Perceived decrease in stress | 72% | 81% |
| Perceived increase in interaction with other people | 60% | 81% |
These are respondents’ perceptions reported in the 2023 Pet Partners and Cat Person report, not clinical measurements or proof of cause and effect. Facility contacts included staff such as activity directors and program coordinators; they were not necessarily clinicians evaluating treatment outcomes. In the same report, all 13 surveyed facility contacts viewed their cat-therapy programming positively and 94% viewed it very positively. That describes this small respondent group, not every program or participant.

Cats may be a welcome option for people uneasy around dogs. Their smaller size and ability to sit on a lap can suit some quieter visits or people with limited mobility, but neither the species nor a visit guarantees a particular response. The recipient’s preferences and comfort matter as much as the animal’s.
What makes a cat a good therapy candidate?
A suitable cat is not merely tolerant of visits. It should be comfortable meeting unfamiliar people, remain reasonably calm amid novelty, and recover after new experiences. Pet Partners notes that visits can involve unfamiliar smells and sounds, medical equipment, wheelchairs, elevators, children and busy corridors. A handler needs to recognize whether the cat is relaxed, uncertain, tired or ready to stop.

There is no universal species winner. When considering a cat, dog or other potential therapy animal, compare each individual’s response to strangers and novelty, ability to settle and recover, transport and handling needs, fit with the planned setting, recipient preferences or fears, and health and infection-control needs. A cat should not be assumed to suit every facility simply because it is affectionate at home.

The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Wellness Guidelines for Animals in Animal-Assisted Activity, Animal-Assisted Therapy and Resident Animal Programs say dogs and cats should not participate until they are at least six months old and prepared for participation. This is professional guidance; a therapy organization or facility may set additional requirements.

Involve a veterinarian in wellness planning. The AVMA guidance covers regular examinations, preventive care, vaccination and parasite considerations, behavior evaluation and attention to changing needs. A health condition does not automatically disqualify every cat in every program: suitability and safety should be assessed for that animal with a veterinarian and the organization.
During a visit, the handler must keep watching the cat rather than focusing only on the recipient. The 2023 report describes handlers offering reassurance or breaks, asking clients to change how they interact, and ending visits early. These are practical ways to respond when a cat shows stress or fatigue. Participation should be voluntary in practice: a cat that is uncomfortable should be allowed to withdraw.

How to register a cat as a therapy animal
Requirements depend on the organization. Pet Partners’ pathway is one example, not a universal standard. Its current FAQ describes a veterinarian-completed Animal Health Screening Form, handler education and a team evaluation. The general sequence is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Create a volunteer account with the organization you intend to join.
- Complete the handler course and review the program’s policies and eligibility requirements.
- Ask your veterinarian to complete the health screening form and discuss whether the cat’s health and behavior suit visits.
- Complete the team evaluation with your cat so the organization can assess you together.
- Submit registration materials and payment as directed, then wait for the organization’s approval before arranging visits.
- Coordinate with each facility separately. A facility must invite and approve the team and may have its own rules.
See Pet Partners’ therapy-animal FAQs for that organization’s current details. Registration with a program does not replace a facility’s approval or the handler’s ongoing responsibility to assess the cat’s comfort.

Therapy cat, service animal and emotional support animal: the difference
| Type | Role | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Therapy animal | Visits other people with a handler to offer comfort and connection. | No general public-access rights from therapy registration; visits are by invitation and approval. |
| Service animal | Trained to perform specific tasks for an individual with a disability. | Its role and access are distinct from a therapy animal’s; therapy registration does not confer service-animal status. |
| Emotional support animal | Provides comfort to its owner. | That role is distinct from visiting others as part of a therapy team. |
Pet Partners states that “Therapy animals do not have public access rights.” A therapy cat cannot therefore be assumed to accompany its handler everywhere; it may visit only where the relevant facility invites and approves the team.
Frequently asked questions
Can any friendly cat become a therapy cat?
No. Friendliness at home is not enough to establish that a cat will be comfortable with strangers, transport and unfamiliar environments. A program evaluation, veterinary input and the cat’s behavior during visits all matter.
Does a cat need to wear a harness?
The cited sources do not establish a harness as a universal requirement or a qualification. A leash or harness may be an option for a cat already comfortable with it, but equipment cannot substitute for preparation, welfare checks or program rules.
