Cats and monkeys are the clearest examples in the surviving evidence. Tomb scenes show them beneath chairs, around houses, and accompanying their owners, while a Middle Kingdom record describes monkeys as sources of amusement and status.
That answer needs an important qualification: an animal in Egyptian art or a mummy in a cemetery was not automatically a pet. Images could be symbolic, and mummified animals could be sacred animals, votive offerings, food for the afterlife, or companions buried with people. The strongest conclusion is that pet keeping existed in particular households and periods, not that every Egyptian owned an animal.

What evidence can establish that an animal was a pet?
Ancient Egyptian evidence comes in several forms, and each answers a slightly different question. A domestic image can suggest an animal lived with people. A text may identify an animal, its owner, or its role. A burial can reveal deliberate care after death. The most persuasive cases combine more than one kind of evidence, but no single category should be treated as a complete census of Egyptian pets.
- Images: Animals shown beneath a chair, beside a person, or in a household setting may be companions. Yet Egyptian artists also used animals to communicate religious, social, or symbolic ideas.
- Texts: Names and descriptions can identify relationships that an image leaves ambiguous. Textual evidence is uneven, however, and does not record every animal represented in art.
- Burials: A carefully prepared burial may indicate attachment, but mummification also served sacred, votive, dietary, and other purposes.
For that reason, historians ask not simply “Is an animal present?” but “What setting, date, wording, and treatment indicate its role?”

Middle Kingdom evidence for household monkeys
One of the clearest examples comes from fragments associated with the tomb of Khety at Deir el-Bahri, dating to the reign of Mentuhotep II, approximately 2051–2000 BCE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes a scene with baboons, more slender guenons, and a dog. Its collection record says that ancient Egyptians kept pet monkeys “for amusement and as status symbols.”
The same record describes monkeys playing around houses and accompanying their owners on outings. This is stronger evidence than a lone animal motif: the setting and behavior place the animals in the orbit of household life. It also shows that keeping a monkey could communicate rank or wealth, not merely affection. A status animal may have been a companion and a social display at the same time.
The scene does not prove that every Middle Kingdom household could obtain a monkey, nor that all monkeys shown in Egyptian art were tame pets. It documents a practice in a particular elite context. The dog in the scene demonstrates that dogs were represented alongside domestic life, but the museum’s explicit pet statement concerns the monkeys.

Cats and monkeys under chairs in New Kingdom tomb art
A New Kingdom scene associated with Queen Tiye, from Dynasty 18 during the reign of Amenhotep III (about 1386–1347 BCE), depicts a vervet monkey, a goose, and a cat beneath a chair. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that cats and monkeys commonly appear under women’s chairs and were treated as family pets, often with names.
The position matters. An animal tucked under a chair is shown inside the social space of the household rather than as a distant wild creature or a temple emblem. Names provide an additional sign of individual recognition. Together, those features support the interpretation of cats and monkeys as familiar domestic companions.

- Heart, Liver & Immune Health - Multifunctional Bites feature powerful antioxidants, premium CoQ10, Cod Liver Oil and Vitamins A, C, & E to promote healthy cardiovascular function, support liver health and enhance immune response.
Still, the museum cautions that the particular grouping in the Queen Tiye scene probably communicates symbolism as well as affection. The goose and the arrangement of the animals may carry meanings beyond a literal record of what sat in the room. The safest reading is therefore twofold: the image draws on real household relationships, while its composition also serves an artistic and social message.
Which animals could be pets?
Cats
Cats are among the best-supported household pets in the visual record. Their repeated appearance beneath women’s chairs, sometimes with names, is consistent with family companionship. Cats could also carry religious associations, so an image of a cat should be read in its full context rather than assumed to be a private pet automatically.

Monkeys
Baboons and guenons appear as household animals in the Middle Kingdom evidence, and a vervet monkey appears in the New Kingdom scene. The sources describe monkeys as playful companions, animals taken on outings, and symbols of status. Their presence is especially useful because the evidence describes behavior, not merely an animal’s existence.
Dogs
A dog appears with monkeys in the Deir el-Bahri tomb material, showing that dogs could be represented in a household setting. The reviewed evidence does not provide a general count of pet dogs or establish that every dog in Egyptian art was a companion. Dogs may have served several roles, including working and symbolic ones, so individual scenes require careful interpretation.
Other animals
The Tiye scene includes a goose, and Egyptian society engaged with many species as food sources, predators, pests, sacred beings, and symbols. The Walters Art Museum summarizes these overlapping roles by explaining that animals were viewed in life and the afterlife in all of those ways. The presence of an animal in Egyptian culture therefore does not, by itself, make it a pet.

Why a tomb picture is not a snapshot of ordinary life
Egyptian tomb art can preserve valuable information about domestic life, but it was created for religious and social purposes. Artists selected, positioned, and labeled figures to convey identity, rank, relationships, and hopes for the afterlife. A pet may be represented because it belonged to the deceased, because it signaled status, or because the image required a symbolic association.

In a 2024 study, Krystal V. L. Pierce compares visual and textual evidence for cats, monkeys, and donkeys. Some animals appear in images but not in texts, while others are attested in writing but are rarely pictured. A count of animals in tomb scenes therefore cannot stand in for the total number of animals present in the community or for the number kept as pets.
This mismatch is not a flaw in one source; it is a reminder that images and texts were made for different purposes. Researchers must compare them rather than treating either one as a complete inventory.
Were animal mummies pets?
Not necessarily. Ancient Egypt produced enormous numbers of animal mummies, but mummification had several distinct purposes. A 2020 study of mummified animals separates categories that include:
- Pets buried with their owners: companions whose relationship continued into the afterlife.
- Food provisions: animals prepared as supplies for the deceased.
- Sacred animals: creatures worshipped or associated with a deity during life.
- Votive offerings: mummies dedicated in temples, often as requests or acts of devotion.
Votive animal mummies became especially widespread from the Late Period into the Roman Period and were by far the most common category discussed in that study. Consequently, a mummified cat, dog, bird, or other animal cannot be labeled a pet without evidence about its burial context and relationship to a person.

The scale of the material can create a misleading impression. The Walters Art Museum reports millions of mummified animals excavated at more than 30 burial sites across Egypt. That figure concerns mummified animals, not household pets, and it provides no basis for estimating how many Egyptians owned companions.
What the Berenike cemetery adds
An unusual cemetery at Berenike, an early Roman Red Sea port, provides archaeological evidence interpreted as a group of house pets. A 2017 study identifies cats, dogs, and monkeys buried there and argues that the burials are domestic rather than ritual deposits. The interpretation rests on the character of the burials and the absence of human inhumations at the site.
Berenike is important because it moves beyond painted scenes to physical remains arranged in a cemetery context. It is also a warning against overgeneralizing. The study describes the cemetery as unique, and its early Roman date and port setting do not make it representative of all Egyptian communities or all periods. It demonstrates that people in at least one place cared enough for household animals to arrange dedicated burials.

|---|---|---|---|
| Middle Kingdom, Deir el-Bahri, ca. 2051–2000 BCE | Tomb fragments showing monkeys and a dog; museum description of household behavior | Baboons and guenons could be household companions, amusement, and status symbols | Documents particular tomb imagery, not pet ownership across Egypt |
| New Kingdom, Thebes, Dynasty 18, ca. 1386–1347 BCE | Vervet monkey, goose, and cat under a chair | Cats and monkeys were represented as family pets, often named | The scene also carries symbolic meaning |
| Deir el-Medina, studied in 2024 | Comparison of visual and textual records for cats, monkeys, and donkeys | Animal evidence differs by medium; neither images nor texts give a complete inventory | The study’s comparison does not establish that all three species were household pets |
| Berenike, early Roman period | Cat, dog, and monkey cemetery without human inhumations | Site-specific cemetery of house pets | The cemetery is unusual and should not be generalized to Egypt as a whole |
How to tell a likely pet from a sacred or votive animal
When examining an Egyptian object or image, use a sequence of questions rather than relying on the species alone.

- Check for individual treatment. A name, a relationship to an owner, or a burial associated with a household strengthens the case for a companion.
- Consider the date and region. Practices changed between the Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom, Late Period, and Roman periods, and between places such as Thebes, Deir el-Medina, and Berenike.
- Separate species from role. Cats, dogs, monkeys, birds, and other animals could each have more than one role.
- Look for competing explanations. Religious symbolism, votive use, food provision, and status display may coexist with affection.
This method prevents two common errors: treating every animal image as documentary and treating every mummy as a beloved pet.

What we can say about ancient Egyptian pet ownership
The evidence supports a measured conclusion. Some households, especially those represented in elite tombs, kept animals as companions. Monkeys were valued for amusement and status, and cats and monkeys appear in domestic scenes beneath chairs, sometimes with names. Dogs also occur in household-associated imagery, while the Berenike cemetery provides a rare physical example of dedicated pet burials.
What the evidence does not provide is a national pet-ownership rate, a complete list of household species, or proof that ordinary Egyptians generally kept pets. Millions of animal mummies cannot be converted into a pet population estimate, and the symbolism of tomb art means that even a convincing domestic scene must be interpreted within its religious and social setting.
Ancient Egyptians therefore did have pets, but “pet” was only one of several ways people related to animals. The clearest cases are individual animals integrated into household life; the broader animal record belongs to a much larger world of companionship, work, worship, food, status, and ritual.
