The most reliable approach is to make donating easy, build relationships with supporters, and choose a mix of fundraising activities that fits your community and your team’s capacity. Before committing, estimate both the money and time each activity will require, then compare its net results with its costs.
Start with a fundraising plan, not a single event
Think of fundraising as an ongoing program rather than a string of one-off events. Individual donations, recurring gifts, appeals, grants, business support, events, and donated goods or services can all contribute. Best Friends Animal Society recommends developing several revenue sources and maintaining communication with supporters; its animal fundraising guide also covers appeals, online giving, peer-to-peer fundraising, grants, and major gifts.

Set a clear, supportable goal first: for example, covering a specific veterinary bill, replenishing a supply, or funding a defined program. Match the appeal to that need, explain who will benefit, and make clear whether you are asking for money, goods, volunteer help, or a combination. A specific purpose helps supporters understand the request without implying that a donation is restricted when it is not.
For a longer-term program, the Best Friends fundraising toolkit includes monthly giving, major donors, planned gifts, direct mail, email, events, and grants. Which elements make sense depends on your organization’s capacity and supporters; the sources do not establish a universally most effective tactic.

Make every donation route easy to find and use
Put a clear donation link on your website and social channels, and use an online payment system that is effective and reasonably priced for your organization. ASPCA’s fundraising tips recommend asking directly, reminding people, thanking donors, and giving people who cannot attend an event another way to contribute.
- State what the fundraiser supports and who receives the funds.
- Use a short, direct request with a working donation link.
- Offer a way to give remotely when fundraising in person.
- Thank donors and share appropriate updates about the need or outcome.
For peer-to-peer fundraising, give supporters a simple goal, a concise explanation they can share, and a donation page. They can then invite friends by email or social media. SPCA International describes this model on its peer-to-peer fundraising page.

Choose an idea that fits your people and community
Compare ideas by estimated net proceeds after direct expenses, staff and volunteer hours, upfront cash or equipment, mission fit, likely community interest, ease of giving, and whether the activity could help build lasting donor relationships. Best Friends advises estimating expenses and probable attendance; an event can lose money if it is poorly planned. No comparable return-on-investment figures are available for the options below, so treat them as ideas to test locally rather than ranked recommendations.

|---|---|---|
| Birthday or peer-to-peer fundraiser | A clear goal, a short explanation, and a donation link supporters can share. | Supporters are willing to invite their own networks online. |
| Bake sale or lemonade stand | Supplies, volunteers, a location, promotion, and the host’s rules for handling funds. | You can run a small, local activity with manageable expenses. |
| Benefit night or percentage-of-sales event | Written agreement with the business, promotion responsibilities, timing, and how proceeds will be calculated. | A local business is willing to participate and both parties can explain the arrangement clearly. |
| Round-up request at a business | Permission, point-of-sale procedures, staff coordination, and a clear beneficiary message. | A business can make the request to its customers and handle contributions appropriately. |
| Animal walk or community gathering | Likely attendance, venue and other direct costs, volunteer workload, and animal-handling policies if animals are involved. | Your community has interest in an activity connected to your mission. |
| Auction or benefit concert | Venue, donated items or services where applicable, promotion, staffing, and realistic attendance estimates. | Your team can secure the needed contributions and manage a more involved event. |
| Car wash or dog wash | Location approval, supplies, volunteers, safety, and rules for handling animals if applicable. | You have an appropriate site, a willing team, and a safe, clearly managed setup. |
Dane County Humane Society’s event-hosting guidance lists ideas and planning and promotion steps. Its policy is specific to that organization: it says it cannot bring adoptable animals to independent events. Ask your own shelter or rescue about its permission requirements and animal-handling policies before advertising an event involving animals.

Ask businesses and supporters for useful non-cash help
A wish list can invite pet food, medical supplies, printing, equipment, professional services, or other items your organization actually needs. Keep the list current and specific so donors can choose appropriate items. Best Friends Animal Society’s guide puts the value plainly: “If you can get what you need donated, that’s as good as raising the money to buy it.” Donated goods can meet needs directly or reduce expenses, but unrestricted money may give your organization more flexibility. Consider which form of support best serves the need.
Local businesses may also be able to offer sponsorships, matching gifts, donated goods or services, or a cause-marketing arrangement. Make a focused request: explain the community benefit, the specific need, and what participation would involve. Agree in advance on promotion, timing, and how contributions will be handled.

Explore grants with a clear fit and realistic budget
Look for funders whose mission, geography, and eligibility rules match your organization. Follow each funder’s current application requirements, describe the intended outcomes, and prepare a budget. Consider how the work would continue if an award is partial or ends.
ASPCA reports that it has awarded more than $250 million in grants to more than 4,000 organizations and programs since 2001, according to its grants page checked in 2026. That is ASPCA’s cumulative grantmaking total—not a typical award, an estimate of funding available to any applicant, or proof that a particular organization qualifies. Check the current program details and eligibility directly with the funder.

- Features a sign holder for a 5.5"W x 8.5"H sign
- Hinged door with metal lock and key protects contents. Bottom holes allow for mounting of box to counter or table.
Measure what each activity actually brings in
After each appeal or event, record the money received, direct expenses, and staff and volunteer hours. Compare the net proceeds and effort with your original estimate. Note how people heard about the fundraiser and whether it brought in new or repeat supporters. Use those results to adjust future plans rather than assuming that a popular event was financially worthwhile.
- Net proceeds: What remained after direct costs?
- Time and capacity: How many staff and volunteer hours did the activity require?
- Reach: Did it connect with the supporters you hoped to reach?
- Follow-up: Did you thank participants and offer a clear next way to stay involved?
Be precise about the beneficiary. For example, ASPCA says donations to it cannot be restricted to a particular area, so a local fundraiser should not suggest that a gift to ASPCA is earmarked for a specific local shelter. Name the organization that will actually receive the funds and explain any limits on how they can be used.
