Some elections have raised money for local causes; others have offered a bit of civic fun or attracted visitors. Here are ten U.S. communities known for electing dogs, goats, cats, and other furry candidates, with the dates and limits of each account made clear.
What does it mean when a town elects an animal mayor?
“Animal mayor” can describe very different things. In many cases, a pet is chosen in a community vote and serves as a mascot or ceremonial representative. Some of these places are unincorporated communities without an official town mayor’s office. Fundraising is another recurring purpose: reported beneficiaries include historical societies, a preschool, a school playground, and animal rescue groups. Those are the elections’ stated purposes, not independently audited results.

10 U.S. communities with animal politicians
1. Sunol, California: Bosco the dog
In 1981, Bosco, a Labrador–Rottweiler mix, reportedly received 75 of 120 votes in a contest against two human candidates. Catster’s 2026 account says he served as honorary mayor until his death in 1994. It reports his campaign promise as “a bone in every dish, a cat in every tree, and a fire hydrant in every corner”; the article does not identify who originally coined the line. 3. Rabbit Hash, Kentucky: a recurring lineup of dog mayors
Rabbit Hash began its animal-mayor tradition in 1998. Catster says the elections are held during presidential election years to raise money for the local historical society. Catster’s account; ABC News report.

Not every animal-politician story describes a town electing an honorary mayor. ABC News reported that Boston Curtis, a mule, was elected Republican precinct committeeman in Milton, Washington, in 1938. The report says the election was a hoax organized by the town’s Democratic mayor. It is a political prank, not evidence that a mule held a municipal mayoralty. ABC News’s account of animal mayors and Boston Curtis.
Quick Recap
How to read the election stories
- Check the kind of office: “Mayor” may be an honorary title, not a legally empowered municipal position.
- Notice the purpose: Some elections support a local cause; others emphasize community participation, civic fun, or tourism.
- Keep the date attached to the claim: An animal named in a past election account is not necessarily the current officeholder.
- Distinguish reported numbers from original records: Bosco’s vote count is reported by Catster in 2026 about the 1981 election; it is not presented here as an original election return.
