How to choose the safest way to deal with a mat
A mat can pull on the skin and trap moisture or debris, so it is more than a cosmetic problem, according to PetMD’s guidance, published September 30, 2026. The safest choice depends on the mat, your cat’s response, and your grooming experience—not on which tool has the sharpest edge.

- Small, loose, accessible tangle: Try gently teasing it apart with a comb or brush only if your cat remains relaxed. Stop if the tangle will not loosen easily.
- Tight, compacted, extensive, or painful mat: Arrange help from a qualified groomer or veterinarian. Veterinary removal may sometimes require sedation.
- Any sign of distress or resistance: Stop rather than restraining your cat and continuing. A cutting-edge tool is not a safe next step for an unwilling cat.
VCA Animal Hospitals’ cat grooming guidance advises using clippers—not scissors—to remove mats. Closely matted fur can make it difficult to tell where skin lies, so do not try to cut a mat out with household scissors.

1. Steel grooming comb for a minor tangle

A slicker brush can be part of regular coat care if your cat tolerates it, but it is not a solution for a tight or extensive mat. VCA notes that long, silky, or curly coats may need daily brushing, especially around the ears, armpits, and backs of the legs. Adjust the routine to your cat’s coat and response.

The FURminator Adjustable deMatting Tool is marketed for dogs and cats and has adjustable curved cutting edges, according to its manufacturer listing. Its instructions say to use it on dry fur, follow the grain, and read the directions carefully. Because this design cuts through fur, it demands particular caution: Zoetis advises using metal-edged dematting tools only with experience, a calm cat, and help to keep the cat still without force. 7. Clippers for trained or experienced handlers
VCA recommends clippers rather than scissors for removing mats. That advice does not mean clipping is simple or suitable for an inexperienced owner: close matting can make skin hard to see, and a moving cat raises the risk of injury. For severe mats, leave clipping to someone with appropriate skill or ask a veterinarian.
8. A professional groomer for mats that are not safely loosening
A groomer is a sensible next step when a mat is tight, widespread, or stubborn, or when gentle grooming is not working. Choose a qualified professional who handles cats and will stop if the cat becomes distressed. If the skin seems sore or the cat reacts as if grooming hurts, consult a veterinarian.

9. A veterinarian when mats are painful or grooming is not tolerated
Seek veterinary help for painful or extensive matting, or when your cat cannot tolerate grooming safely. A veterinarian can assess the skin and decide how removal should be handled; VCA notes that veterinary removal may sometimes require sedation.

Only attempt home grooming when the tangle is small and accessible, and your cat is calm. VCA’s guidance supports gentle loosening of small tangles and stopping when a cat resists or grooming causes distress.
- Choose a calm moment and let your cat settle. Do not force or tightly restrain a cat that is resisting.
- Check the tangle gently with your fingers and a comb. If it is tight against the skin, painful, or too extensive to work on comfortably, stop and seek professional help.
- Work on a small, loose tangle gently, without yanking or pulling the skin. Keep the combing brief and watch your cat’s response.
- Stop immediately if your cat resists, shows distress, or the mat does not loosen easily. Do not switch to scissors or a sharp dematting tool to force the job through.
- Arrange grooming or veterinary care for a stubborn, painful, or widespread mat.
Prevent new mats with a coat-care routine
Prevention is different from removing an existing mat. Regular brushing helps reduce tangles; it does not make a dematting tool appropriate for every knot. VCA says long, silky, or curly coats may need daily brushing, with particular attention to areas prone to tangling, including behind the ears, armpits, and backs of the legs.
