Most pets should see a veterinarian at least once a year, even when they seem healthy. Regular checkups let the care team assess changes against that pet’s own health baseline and tailor preventive care to age, species, lifestyle, and medical history. Senior pets and pets with ongoing conditions may need visits more often; the right schedule is an individual plan, not a universal rule.
Why schedule a checkup when your pet seems well?
Pets can hide pain and illness, and changes may be subtle at home. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) notes that “Pets instinctively hide pain and illness signs, which can prevent pet owners from realizing their furry friend is sick.” A routine exam gives a veterinary team a chance to look for changes and compare findings with the animal’s own baseline. It cannot guarantee that a problem will be found early or prevent every illness, but it can help guide appropriate care.

An annual visit is also a chance to raise observations you have noticed: changes in appetite, activity, behavior, mobility, or signs of discomfort. Those details can help your veterinarian decide whether the pet needs further evaluation.
How often should pets have veterinary checkups?
AAHA recommends routine veterinary care at least annually as a general minimum. Its position statement says frequency should be individualized according to age, species, breed, health, and environment. The statement was adopted in June 2008 and last revised in November 2014, so treat it as general guidance to discuss with your veterinarian rather than a rigid schedule.

| Pet or situation | Guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Adult pet without a known ongoing health issue | At least one routine veterinary examination per year, per AAHA’s general recommendation. | Use this as a minimum starting point; the veterinarian may recommend a different interval based on the animal’s needs. |
| Senior dog or cat | AAHA’s summary of joint AAHA/AVMA preventive-care guidance describes exams every six months as beneficial for senior dogs and cats. | Discuss whether six-month visits suit your pet’s health, age, and care plan. |
| Senior dog | AAHA’s canine life-stage checklist recommends more frequent exams, at least every six months, alongside appropriate diagnostic screening. | This is canine-specific guidance, not a frequency protocol for every species. |
| Pet with a chronic condition or changing health | Frequency depends on the animal; no single interval is established for all such pets. | Ask the veterinarian how often the condition or treatment should be reviewed. |
Indoor cats and pets that appear healthy should not be assumed to need no routine care. AAHA’s guidance supports regular examinations, while the specific interval remains a veterinary decision informed by the pet’s circumstances.
What happens during a pet wellness exam?
An annual wellness exam may include a head-to-tail physical assessment and a discussion of health, behavior, and lifestyle. Depending on the pet, the veterinarian may also review:

AAHA’s 2022 senior-care table gives examples of monitoring intervals, not universal requirements: it lists fecal parasite testing one to four times per year for senior dogs depending on preventive products and lifestyle, and one to two times per year for senior cats depending on health and lifestyle. The same table lists a CBC, chemistry, and urinalysis every six to twelve months for senior dogs and cats. Your veterinarian can explain whether any of these tests or intervals apply to your pet.
How to prepare for the appointment
- Write down changes and questions. Note shifts in appetite, activity, behavior, mobility, or comfort, including when they began and how often they occur.
- Bring a current medication and supplement list. Include doses if you know them, and mention any changes since the last visit.
- Ask about the schedule. Confirm when your pet should return and whether any recommended screening or preventive care is specific to its age or lifestyle.
- Plan a calm, safe trip. If your pet has travel anxiety or motion sickness, raise it with the veterinary team. A carrier may be useful for transporting a cat or small pet; choose transport arrangements appropriate to your animal.
What does an annual checkup cost?
There is no single general price established here. The bill varies by location, clinic, and the services recommended for the individual pet. Ask the clinic what the appointment fee includes and whether proposed tests or preventive treatments are separate charges.
