The five cat personality types usually refer to the Feline Five: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Dominance, Impulsiveness, and Agreeableness. These are five dimensions used to describe differences among cats—not five exclusive boxes, so one cat may show different levels across several dimensions.
What does the Feline Five describe?
The Feline Five emerged from a 2017 study by Litchfield and colleagues. Owners rated 2,802 pet cats in South Australia and New Zealand on 52 personality traits. The researchers used principal axis factor analysis to identify five reliable factors in those ratings: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Dominance, Impulsiveness, and Agreeableness. In other words, the labels summarize clusters of rated traits. They are not diagnoses, nor do they establish that every cat belongs to a single, fixed type.
What are the five cat personality dimensions?
Neuroticism
This factor was associated with insecurity, anxiety, fear of people, suspicion, and shyness. It describes a pattern of ratings, not a clinical diagnosis of anxiety.

Extraversion
Extraversion is one of the five factors identified by the study. The reported evidence establishes its place in the model but does not support a more specific description here.
Dominance
The study associated this factor with bullying, dominance, and aggression toward other cats.
Impulsiveness
This factor was associated with impulsive, erratic, and reckless traits.

Agreeableness
The study associated this factor with being affectionate, friendly to people, and gentle.
How strong was the evidence?
The study reported internal consistency coefficients of .90 for Neuroticism, .80 for Extraversion, .80 for Dominance, .72 for Impulsiveness, and .78 for Agreeableness. These values describe consistency among items in the study’s measure; they are not percentages of cats or estimates of how many cats have a particular personality.
The factors accounted for initial variance of 18.24%, 12.03%, 6.97%, 6.51%, and 3.67%, respectively, before rotation. Those figures describe the statistical analysis, not the proportion of cats belonging to each factor.

Can you use the Feline Five to understand your cat?
The framework can offer a vocabulary for noticing patterns, but a label alone cannot explain why a cat behaves a certain way. The authors discussed possible welfare implications: high impulsiveness may reflect stress in the environment, while irritability associated with low agreeableness may signal pain or illness. These are possibilities to consider, not diagnostic criteria.
If your cat’s behavior changes, consider the circumstances and consult a veterinarian when appropriate. A personality framework cannot determine the cause of a change or replace veterinary assessment. Litchfield and colleagues recommended a systematic, holistic approach that considers both the individual cat and its environment.

What are the study’s limits?
The 2017 findings came from owners’ survey ratings of cats in South Australia and New Zealand. The authors noted that a more representative sample could be useful and that the survey did not ask how long each rater had known the cat. The findings support a five-factor structure in that study; they do not prove that the same structure applies identically to every cat population.
A 2021 paper discusses the Feline Five alongside wider work on reliability and validity in feline behavior and personality measurement. It provides context for research in this area, but does not establish the factors as an official diagnostic classification. Read the 2021 paper in Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
