Antibiotics treat susceptible bacterial infections, but the right medicine and dose depend on the cat and the infection. There is no safe universal cat antibiotic dose: use only the medicine prescribed for your cat, exactly as its label and veterinarian direct. This overview is informational, not a dosing guide; its references are principally U.S. sources, and medicines and prescribing rules vary by country.

When are antibiotics used for cats?

A veterinarian may prescribe an antibiotic when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed and treatment is judged necessary. Antibiotics do not treat viral disease or every cause of symptoms such as sneezing, diarrhea, or a wound. Even finding bacteria does not always mean a cat needs a systemic antibiotic; the infection site, clinical signs, and test results help determine whether treatment is appropriate.

The FDA’s stewardship principle is that medically important antimicrobials should be used only when necessary to treat, control, or prevent disease, and under a licensed veterinarian’s oversight. Depending on the case, a veterinarian may recommend local care rather than an oral or injectable drug. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that many feline abscesses may be managed with local treatment, but that is not a rule for every wound; the veterinarian must assess the individual cat.

Which antibiotics might a veterinarian prescribe?

The examples below are not interchangeable choices. The suspected infection, the organism and its susceptibility, the medicine’s properties, how it can be given, and the cat’s health all affect selection.

Medicine or group What to know
Amoxicillin A penicillin antibiotic described by Merck as broad-spectrum. Its activity still depends on the bacteria and susceptibility.
Amoxicillin-clavulanate Clavulanate can protect amoxicillin from some bacterial beta-lactamases. That does not make the combination appropriate for every infection.
Clindamycin One of the feline antibiotic examples in Merck’s antistaphylococcal reference table. It can cause gastrointestinal upset, and dry tablets or capsules can injure a cat’s esophagus.
Enrofloxacin Requires particular caution in cats: Merck warns of retinal damage and blindness, especially at higher doses, and says it should be avoided in cats wherever possible.

Do not switch between antibiotics or use a medicine prescribed for another pet based on a shared symptom. A veterinarian may use culture and susceptibility testing to help identify the organism and choose a suitable, narrower treatment.

Why is there no standard antibiotic dose for cats?

A dose cannot be safely chosen from a generic web chart. Merck’s dosing guidance explains that a regimen depends on the pathogen’s minimum inhibitory concentration, how the drug behaves in the target species, and the infection site and host factors. The veterinarian also considers the cat’s clinical condition and may revise the plan as test results or response to treatment become available.

Veterinary reference tables contain doses for defined drugs and clinical contexts; those entries are not a prescription for a cat with an unknown diagnosis. They may differ by route, interval, duration, organism, or treatment objective. Do not calculate a dose from your cat’s weight, use leftover antibiotics, or give human medicine unless the prescribing veterinarian has specifically directed it.

What side effects should you watch for?

Side effects differ by medicine. For amoxicillin, VCA lists reduced appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea as possible effects. Rash, fever, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing can indicate a serious allergic reaction and require immediate veterinary contact. VCA also advises prompt attention if a cat’s appetite loss persists.

Clindamycin can cause gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs; cats may also drool or smack their lips. Do not give a clindamycin tablet or capsule dry: it can lodge in the esophagus and cause injury. Contact the veterinary clinic if your cat has trouble swallowing or eating.

A reaction to one antibiotic does not establish what will happen with another. If you suspect an adverse reaction or overdose, contact the prescribing veterinarian; breathing difficulty or facial swelling are urgent warning signs.

How should you give a prescribed antibiotic?

Follow the prescription label and the veterinarian’s directions for the individual cat. Before leaving the clinic, confirm the medicine name, amount per dose, route, schedule, duration, food instructions, and storage requirements. These details vary by medicine, so do not assume that one antibiotic’s instructions apply to another.

  • Give the prescribed amount at the directed intervals. Skipping doses can undermine treatment; FDA guidance notes it may also contribute to resistance.
  • For a liquid, follow the label about shaking and use an appropriate measuring device rather than estimating by eye.
  • Use the medicine only by the prescribed route. For example, do not substitute ear drops for eye drops or otherwise change how a product is administered.
  • If your cat misses a dose, vomits, or spits the medicine out, ask the prescribing veterinarian what to do. Do not automatically repeat or double a dose: after vomiting, a second dose could result in too much medicine being absorbed.
  • If side effects occur or the plan needs to change, contact the veterinarian promptly rather than independently stopping, extending, or altering treatment.

Ask the clinic directly: “How often should the medicine be given and how much should I give each time?” and “What should I do if my pet vomits or spits out the medicine?” FDA also recommends asking why the medicine is prescribed, how long to give it, whether to give it with food, and what to do after a missed dose.

How do testing and careful use help limit resistance?

Antimicrobial resistance can make medicines less effective. FDA’s veterinary stewardship effort aims to slow resistance while retaining safe and effective drugs for animals and people. Its resistance page describes a 2024–2028 veterinary stewardship action plan.

Culture and susceptibility testing can help identify bacteria and guide selection of a narrower suitable treatment. Merck cautions that a cat’s clinical improvement alone does not ensure resistance has not emerged. Depending on the case, hygiene, local treatment, avoiding unnecessary antibiotic exposure, and choosing an evidence-supported duration can also be part of responsible care.
