Antifreeze Poisoning in Cats: Treat Exposure as an Emergency

Antifreeze exposure can cause rapid, life-threatening kidney injury in cats. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately—do not wait for symptoms or try a home remedy.

Suspected antifreeze exposure in a cat is an emergency. Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately and get veterinary care; do not wait for symptoms. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote. If you can do so without delaying care, bring the product container or a clear photo of its ingredient label.

What to do if your cat may have been exposed

  1. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service now. Tell them what product may be involved, when exposure could have happened, and what signs you have noticed. Follow their directions while arranging urgent veterinary care.
  2. Keep your cat away from the spill or product. Prevent further contact, but do not spend time cleaning up before seeking help.
  3. Bring product information if it is readily available. Formulas vary, so the ingredient label can help the veterinary team identify the risk. A photo is useful if you cannot safely bring the container.
  4. Do not try home treatment. Do not induce vomiting, give medication, or administer an antidote unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.

A cat that seems normal may still be in danger: early signs can be subtle, and waiting for them can cost critical treatment time.

How cats get antifreeze poisoning

Ethylene glycol, found in many radiator antifreeze products, is a highly toxic ingredient for cats. Exposure can occur when a cat licks a spill or leak, but products called antifreeze do not all have the same formulation. Possible sources of ethylene glycol also include some solar heat-exchange fluids, ice-rink freezing equipment, brake or transmission fluids, and other household or automotive products. Merck Veterinary Manual also reports toxicity after skin absorption from topical products containing ethylene glycol.

After ingestion, ethylene glycol is converted into substances that cause metabolic acidosis and acute kidney injury. Oxalate, one of those substances, can bind calcium and form crystals in kidney tubules, as described in Merck’s professional toxicology guidance.

Small exposures can be dangerous

Merck Veterinary Manual’s pet-owner article, last updated in September 2024, warns that a small lethal dose for a cat may be only 1 to 2 teaspoons. Its professional article gives a minimum lethal dose of undiluted ethylene glycol in cats as 1.4 mL/kg. These are toxicology warnings, not amounts an owner can use to judge whether an exposure is safe or to calculate a cat’s risk. If exposure is possible, seek professional advice immediately.

What are the signs of ethylene glycol poisoning?

Early signs may start about 30 minutes to 12 hours after exposure and can resemble alcohol intoxication. Watch for:

How a veterinarian diagnoses poisoning

Diagnosis can be difficult if no one saw the exposure because early signs overlap with other illnesses. The veterinarian will consider the exposure history and physical examination alongside blood and urine tests. Some clinics have an in-house blood test for ethylene glycol; when reliable confirmation is unavailable, Merck notes that a veterinarian may need to begin presumptive treatment based on the overall evidence.

How poisoning is treated and what affects the outlook

Treatment is time-sensitive and depends on when exposure occurred and the cat’s condition. Veterinary care may include measures to reduce further absorption when appropriate, intravenous fluids, antidotal therapy to prevent ethylene glycol metabolism, and supportive treatment for metabolic or other complications. Merck describes early intravenous ethanol treatment as potentially helpful in cats; professional guidance also discusses fomepizole or ethanol approaches. The choice is for the veterinary team—not a home-treatment decision—and this article does not provide medication doses.

The outlook worsens as time passes between exposure and treatment. Merck Veterinary Manual states, “The prognosis worsens as more time elapses between ingestion and treatment.” Merck’s guidance says the outlook is poor once severe kidney failure develops, and VCA describes prognosis as very poor after signs have developed. These are serious risks, not a guarantee of an individual cat’s outcome; only the treating veterinarian can assess the cat’s condition.

Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are not equally toxic

Ingredient Relative toxicity and outlook What owners should do
Ethylene glycol Highly toxic to cats; poisoning can cause acute kidney injury. Merck’s September 2024 pet-owner guidance describes a poor outlook with severe kidney failure. Keep it inaccessible. Suspected exposure requires immediate veterinary or animal poison-control contact.
Propylene glycol Merck says it is less toxic than ethylene glycol and is associated with a generally better outlook. Still keep it away from cats. ASPCA advises preventing pet exposure; “less toxic” does not mean safe to ingest.

How to reduce the risk at home

  • Store antifreeze and other automotive or household chemicals securely, where cats cannot reach them.
  • Clean leaks and spills promptly. Merck recommends using absorbent material for cleanup.
  • Keep cats away from any area where a product has spilled, including during cleanup.
  • Do not assume a product is harmless because it is labeled pet-safe or contains propylene glycol; prevent access to all antifreeze products.
