A seizure in a cat is a symptom, not a diagnosis: causes range from problems inside the brain to low blood sugar, toxins, and other conditions elsewhere in the body. If a seizure lasts more than five minutes or seizures happen close together, contact an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. During an episode, keep yourself and your cat safe, do not put anything in the cat’s mouth, and note how long the visible seizure lasts.

What does a seizure look like in a cat?

Seizures can affect movement, awareness, behavior, sensation, and automatic body functions. Some involve dramatic whole-body convulsions; others are more subtle or limited to one area. A cat may appear unresponsive or lose consciousness, make unusual movements, behave oddly, or show signs such as salivation, vomiting, urination, or defecation. These signs can have causes other than seizures, which is one reason veterinary assessment matters.

Focal and generalized signs

  • Focal seizure: Abnormal activity affects a limited part of the body or appears as a localized change in behavior or sensation. It may not look like a full-body convulsion.
  • Generalized seizure: The event affects the body more broadly and may include impaired awareness and widespread motor activity.

A seizure may have three phases: behavioral changes before the visible event (the prodromal phase), the seizure itself (the ictus), and a recovery period (the postictal phase). Afterward, a cat may pace, seem confused, or act unusually hyperactive. Note recovery behavior separately from the start and end of the visible event; it can help the veterinarian understand what happened.

What causes seizures in cats?

Possible causes include disease within the brain and problems elsewhere in the body. A seizure alone does not establish epilepsy, so the veterinarian will investigate the cause before deciding how to describe or treat the condition.

Causes within the brain

Brain-related causes can include tumors, inflammation or infection, trauma, reduced blood flow or other ischemic injury, and developmental abnormalities. Head injury is one possible cause; Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises: “If your cat has suffered a head injury, transport it immediately to an emergency veterinary facility.” Cornell Feline Health Center: Head Trauma.

Causes elsewhere in the body

Metabolic or reactive causes can include low blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance, liver-related encephalopathy, kidney-related uremia, certain medications or other drugs, toxins, and envenomation. Some seizures occur in connection with a temporary disturbance, intoxication, or injury. Repeated unprovoked seizures may lead a veterinarian to consider epilepsy, including idiopathic epilepsy, but that label does not rule out the need to evaluate treatable causes.

How long can a cat seizure last before it’s an emergency?

A seizure lasting more than five minutes requires immediate veterinary treatment. Several seizures in rapid succession are also an emergency. Cornell advises consultation without delay when feline seizures occur less than 10 or 15 minutes apart; do not wait for another episode if seizures are clustering. See Merck Veterinary Manual: Seizures and Status Epilepticus in Small Animals, Cornell Feline Health Center: Seizures, and VCA: Emergencies in Cats.

Contact veterinary care promptly for a first seizure or any event that concerns you, even if it stops sooner. The five-minute threshold is an emergency trigger, not a reason to delay calling for advice. A veterinarian or emergency clinic can help determine how quickly your cat needs to be seen.

What should I do if my cat is having a seizure?

  1. Prioritize safety. Keep yourself safe and avoid putting your hands or any object in the cat’s mouth.
  2. Time the visible event if you can do so safely. Record when it starts and ends. If safe and practical, a short video may help the veterinarian assess the episode.
  3. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic for instructions. Seek emergency treatment immediately if the seizure lasts more than five minutes, or if seizures occur in rapid succession or less than 10 or 15 minutes apart.
  4. Describe recovery separately. Note confusion, pacing, hyperactivity, or other behavior after the visible seizure has stopped.

For a cat with a head injury, go immediately to an emergency veterinary facility, as Cornell advises. Do not give medication unless a veterinarian directs you to do so.

How do vets diagnose seizures in cats?

The veterinarian will use your account of the episode and a physical and neurologic examination to assess whether it was a seizure or another event, such as fainting (syncope), and to look for underlying illness. Details such as what the cat was doing beforehand, the movements or behavior observed, the event’s duration, and the recovery period can help guide that assessment.

Testing depends on the history and examination; not every cat needs every test. A workup may start with blood and urine tests and expand if findings point to a particular cause or if the cause remains unclear.

Part of the workup What it may help assess
Blood tests, including a complete blood count, chemistry, and electrolytes Metabolic abnormalities and other systemic clues
Urinalysis and, when indicated, infectious-disease testing Additional evidence of illness outside the brain
Systemic imaging Possible disease elsewhere in the body
Brain imaging, such as MRI, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis Possible structural, inflammatory, or other neurologic causes

The veterinarian chooses tests based on the individual cat. For an overview of the possible diagnostic and treatment approaches, see Merck Veterinary Manual: Epilepsy in Small Animals.

How are seizures in cats treated?

Treatment depends on the cause, recurrence, severity, and the cat’s overall condition. When an ongoing or clustered seizure requires emergency control, a veterinarian may administer anticonvulsant medication. Longer-term antiseizure medication is a veterinary decision; the caregiver and veterinarian should discuss expected benefits, risks, and monitoring needs. Do not start, stop, or give a medication without veterinary direction.

Emergency control and ongoing management are different decisions

Emergency treatment aims to control a dangerous episode or cluster. Longer-term treatment addresses the pattern of seizures and the underlying diagnosis, when one is found. A cat with a reactive seizure may need care directed at the triggering problem, while recurring unprovoked seizures may lead the veterinarian to discuss epilepsy management. Antiseizure drugs require appropriate veterinary oversight and monitoring.

Merck’s guidance describes antiseizure medication as central to epilepsy treatment and emphasizes discussing benefits, risks, and monitoring with the caregiver. The specific plan belongs to the veterinarian familiar with the cat’s findings and health status.
