Antiplaque Sealants in Cats and Dogs: Reading the AAHA Educational Image

AAHA’s educational image shows barrier sealant gel applied to a cat and hydrophilic gingival sealant applied to a dog. Here is what each panel means, what the schedules apply to, and why sealants supplement rather than replace dental care.

The AAHA educational image titled “Application of antiplaque sealant” shows two veterinary dental procedures at the gingival sulcus: a barrier sealant gel being professionally applied to a cat, and a hydrophilic gingival dental sealant being professionally applied to a dog. The materials are intended to reduce plaque accumulation, including below the gumline. They are adjuncts, not substitutes for tooth brushing or veterinary dental treatment.

The cat example pairs the professional application with weekly reapplication of a home plaque-prevention gel by the owner. The dog example identifies reapplication every six months. Those intervals belong to the specific products and cases shown; they are not a universal schedule for every veterinary sealant.

What the AAHA image depicts

AAHA published the educational image on May 3, 2019, under the title “Educational Images: Applying antiplaque sealants.” Photographer Jan Bellows is credited. Rather than showing a human cavity-prevention procedure, the photograph documents veterinary plaque-control products placed in the gingival sulcus of a cat and a dog.

The gingival sulcus is the narrow space where the tooth meets the gum. Plaque can collect there, including in areas that are difficult for an owner to reach with routine home care. The image therefore focuses on placement along the gum margin, not on filling a cavity or repairing a damaged tooth.

Panel Animal Material described in the caption Application site Reapplication described
A Cat Barrier sealant gel, followed by home plaque-prevention gel Gingival sulcus Home gel reapplied weekly by the owner
B Dog Hydrophilic gingival dental sealant Gingival sulcus Reapplication recommended every six months

The table records what the caption assigns to each panel. It does not establish that the dog formulation is better than the cat formulation, or that one interval should be copied for another animal or product.

What is being applied to the cat?

Professional placement of a barrier sealant gel

In panel A, a veterinary professional applies barrier sealant gel to the cat’s gingival sulcus. “Barrier” describes the product’s plaque-control role: it is placed where plaque accumulates in an effort to reduce that accumulation, including subgingivally. The image is an educational depiction of placement, not a claim that the gel sterilizes the mouth or permanently seals the tooth.

Weekly home reapplication in this pictured example

The caption adds a home-care step for the cat: the owner reapplies a plaque-prevention gel weekly after the professional application. Weekly use is tied to the gel and case shown in the caption. A different product, formulation, patient, or veterinary protocol may have different directions, so owners should follow the label and the attending veterinary team rather than infer a general weekly rule from the photograph.

What is being applied to the dog?

Hydrophilic gingival dental sealant

Panel B shows a hydrophilic gingival dental sealant applied professionally to the dog’s gingival sulcus. “Hydrophilic” indicates that the material is described as compatible with a moist oral environment, an important practical consideration at the gumline. The caption does not provide a brand name, a concentration, or a comparative efficacy result.

Six-month reapplication recommendation

For the dog example, the caption recommends reapplication every six months. This is a direction for the pictured hydrophilic gingival sealant, not a universal veterinary-dentistry timetable. The veterinarian must determine whether and when a particular patient needs another application.

What veterinary antiplaque sealants are meant to do

AAHA’s dental-care guidance describes veterinary barrier sealants as a way to decrease plaque accumulation, including plaque below the gumline. Plaque is the bacterial film that continually forms on teeth. Reducing its buildup can support an overall oral-hygiene plan, but the sealant is only one component of that plan.

AAHA states: “Although the use of barrier sealants has been shown to decrease accumulation of plaque subgingivally, it does not totally prevent accumulation of subgingival plaque, the occurrence of periodontal disease, the need for home oral hygiene, or professional dental therapy.” This qualification applies to the category of barrier sealants and sets the correct expectations for interpreting the image.

Why the gingival sulcus is the focus

Applying material at the gingival sulcus targets the tooth–gum interface, where plaque can remain hidden from a quick visual inspection. Subgingival plaque is especially relevant to periodontal health because it lies below the visible crown of the tooth. A sealant placed at this margin is therefore intended as a plaque-management aid, not as a cosmetic coating over the whole tooth.

The image does not show every step of a dental procedure. It does not establish whether the animal had anesthesia, scaling, polishing, radiographs, periodontal probing, or treatment of existing disease. Those decisions depend on the patient’s examination and the veterinary practice’s protocol.

How to interpret the two schedules safely

Weekly home gel for the cat panel

  • Professional application is shown first.
  • The owner’s role is weekly reapplication of the home plaque-prevention gel described in the caption.
  • The interval should not be transferred to another gel without veterinary or label instructions.

Six-month reapplication for the dog panel

  • The dog receives professional application of a hydrophilic gingival dental sealant.
  • The caption specifies reapplication every six months for that example.
  • A six-month interval is not proof that all sealants last six months or that every dog needs the same visit schedule.

Keeping the interval attached to its product and animal prevents a common misreading of educational photographs: turning an example caption into a blanket prescription.

What the image does not prove

  • It does not identify a commercial brand or confirm that a particular product is currently available.
  • It does not provide an efficacy percentage, a clinical trial result, or evidence that one pictured material outperforms the other.
  • It does not show that sealants prevent periodontal disease completely.
  • It does not replace a dental examination, treatment of established disease, or a home-care plan.
  • It does not establish that a product can be applied safely by an untrained person.

AAHA’s guidance supports the category and its intended role, while the image caption supplies the two application examples. Product selection, timing, and technique still require veterinary judgment.

Sealants are an adjunct to home and professional dental care

Home oral hygiene remains necessary

Because plaque reforms continuously, a one-time professional application cannot provide permanent control. AAHA specifically says barrier sealants do not eliminate the need for home oral hygiene. A veterinary team may teach an owner how to perform an appropriate daily or otherwise prescribed routine, using products and techniques suited to the animal.

Professional dental therapy remains necessary

Sealants also do not eliminate professional dental therapy. Veterinary care may be needed to assess periodontal tissues, remove deposits, investigate painful or infected teeth, and treat disease that a surface barrier cannot correct. The image should be read as one tool within preventive or ongoing dental care, not as a stand-alone treatment.

Veterinarian-guided products

For broader home-care planning, AAHA points to the Veterinary Oral Health Council’s accepted-products list for products shown to retard plaque and/or calculus accumulation. That reference supports choosing veterinarian-guided home dental products by their accepted use; it is not an endorsement of a specific brand in this image.

Veterinary sealants versus human tooth sealants

The word “sealant” can cause confusion because human dentistry commonly uses tooth sealants to help prevent decay, especially in pits and fissures. AAHA distinguishes that human use from veterinary barrier sealants. In the cat-and-dog image, the stated objective is reducing plaque accumulation at the gingival sulcus, including subgingivally, rather than preventing human-style tooth decay.

When explaining the image to a client or student, use a precise phrase such as “veterinary antiplaque barrier sealant” or “hydrophilic gingival dental sealant.” Avoid saying only “tooth sealant” when that wording could suggest a human cavity-prevention procedure.

How a veterinary professional or student can read the figure

  1. Identify the species and panel. Panel A is the cat; panel B is the dog.
  2. Locate the treatment site. In both panels, the caption places the material in the gingival sulcus.
  3. Name the material exactly as described. Use “barrier sealant gel” for the cat and “hydrophilic gingival dental sealant” for the dog.
  4. Separate professional and owner tasks. The professional applies both pictured materials; the owner is assigned weekly home-gel reapplication only in the cat example.
  5. Record the interval with its case. Weekly applies to the cat’s home gel in the caption; six months applies to the dog’s hydrophilic sealant.
  6. Add the limitation. The purpose is plaque reduction, and the material does not remove the need for home hygiene or professional therapy.

This sequence keeps the visual description, clinical purpose, and limitations together without inferring details that the photograph does not show.

Questions owners should ask before agreeing to an application

  • What is the exact product category and intended purpose?
  • Is the application being used preventively, after a professional cleaning, or as part of management of existing periodontal disease?
  • What home-care action is required, and how often should it be performed?
  • When is the next professional evaluation or reapplication, and is that interval specific to this product?
  • What signs of oral pain, bleeding, difficulty eating, or worsening breath should prompt an earlier appointment?

These questions turn the image’s general educational message into a patient-specific plan. The veterinary team can also explain whether the animal needs additional diagnostics or treatment that a sealant cannot provide.

Bottom line for reading “Applying antiplaque sealants”

The AAHA image shows professional placement of veterinary plaque barriers in the gingival sulcus of a cat and a dog. The cat panel describes weekly owner-applied home gel; the dog panel describes six-month reapplication of a hydrophilic gingival sealant. Both examples concern plaque reduction. Neither supports treating sealants as a cure for periodontal disease or as a replacement for regular home oral hygiene and professional dental care.
