Yes. Azaleas are toxic to cats, and every part of the plant can be dangerous if chewed or swallowed. If you suspect your cat has eaten any part of an azalea, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly—even if your cat seems fine. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Why azaleas are dangerous to cats

Azalea is a common name for plants in the Rhododendron genus; poison-control listings use both “azalea” and “rhododendron.” The ASPCA identifies azalea as Rhododendron spp. and lists grayantoxin as its toxic principle. Pet Poison Helpline describes grayanotoxins in all parts of rhododendrons, including the leaves and flowers. ASPCA: Azalea; Pet Poison Helpline: Azalea

Pet Poison Helpline warns that a cat or dog may develop severe signs after consuming only a few leaves or flowers. There is no established safe amount for a cat in the cited guidance, so do not try to judge the risk by how much appears to be missing.

What symptoms can azalea poisoning cause?

Possible signs include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, and weakness. More serious effects can involve the heart and nervous system. ASPCA’s rhododendron listing also names low blood pressure, central nervous system depression, coma, cardiovascular collapse, and death; it says clinical effects typically occur within hours. These are possible outcomes, not a prediction that every exposure will cause them. ASPCA: Rhododendron

BugMD Flea and Tick Spray for Dogs - Kills & Repels on Contact
  • KILLS & REPELS ON CONTACT: Knock down an active flea and tick problem fast — this plant-powered spray kills fleas and ticks on contact and keeps repelling them on dogs, so you’re not waiting days for a pill or drop to take effect.
  • PLANT-POWERED ESSENTIAL OILS: A working blend of cedarwood, rosemary, geranium, lemongrass, and thyme oils — a plant-powered alternative to harsh chemical collars, pills, and drops when used as directed.
  • SAFE FOR PETS & FAMILY WHEN USED AS DIRECTED: Formulated without permethrin, and gentle enough for dogs, puppies, and senior dogs when diluted and used as directed. Always read the full label and spot-test a small area before full-body application.
  • TREAT THE WHOLE HOME, NOT JUST YOUR PET: Fleas live in your carpets, not only on your animal — spray it on carpets, rugs, pet beds, furniture, floors, baseboards, and kennels to treat the environment, indoors and out, when used as directed.
  • COMPLETE KIT, MAKES 32 OZ: Includes one 16 oz refillable spray bottle and two 3.7 oz concentrate bottles — just add water to make 32 oz of plant-powered flea and tick spray for dogs and home. Refill instead of rebuying, so a little goes a long way.

What to do if your cat ate an azalea

  1. Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service for case-specific instructions. If your cat is showing symptoms, seek immediate veterinary treatment.
  2. Identify the plant. Keep the plant or take a clear photo to help a professional confirm what your cat may have encountered.
  3. Describe the exposure. Be ready to explain what may have been chewed or swallowed and when it happened. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian or poison-control specialist directs you to do so.

ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435 and notes that a consultation fee may apply. Pet Poison Helpline lists (855) 764-7661 and states that an incident fee applies. Check each provider’s current page for phone availability, fees, and guidance. You can also call your own veterinarian.

How often have cats been reported in azalea exposures?

Pet Poison Helpline reported 587 azalea or rhododendron exposure calls from March 2009 through March 2019, including 155 involving cats. Gastrointestinal signs predominated. The handout also noted three reports of cardiac dysrhythmia or bradycardia, but said those signs were not reliably corroborated by the attending veterinarian or correlated with ingestion time. These are historical hotline case counts—not an estimate of how often poisoning occurs among all cats, or a way to predict the outcome for an individual cat. Pet Poison Helpline case data

How to prevent access

Keep azaleas and rhododendrons where your cat cannot reach them; ASPCA recommends avoiding these plants where pets have access. Do not rely on a deterrent or barrier as a substitute for keeping the plant inaccessible. The cited guidance does not establish a particular replacement plant as cat-safe.
