Teach Your Cat to Use a Cat Door: A Gentle Step-by-Step Plan

Begin with the flap fully open, reward calm interest, and invite your cat through. Practice both directions before lowering the flap gradually.

Start with the flap secured fully open, reward your cat for calm interest, and invite them through with a treat—never push them. Practice from both sides, then lower the flap gradually as your cat grows comfortable. Cats Protection recommends this reward-based progression; the available guidance does not establish a formal veterinary endorsement for these tips.

1. Make the first encounter easy

Secure the flap fully open so your cat can see and pass through without touching it. Let them investigate at their own pace. Reward calm, non-fearful interest near the opening with a small treat or a little of their normal food ration.

2. Invite your cat through—don’t push

Once your cat seems relaxed near the opening, stand on the other side with a reward and call them through. Give the reward after they pass. Cats Protection’s kitten guide recommends holding the door open and luring a cat near the flap with treats (Bringing a New Kitten Home). Avoid carrying or forcing your cat through; let them choose to cross.

3. Practice in both directions

Repeat the open-flap exercise until your cat walks through comfortably. Practice entering and exiting rather than assuming success in one direction means they understand both. If they hesitate on one side, focus on that direction with the flap still held open. Cats Protection’s cat-flap training advice recommends practicing until the cat is happy using the flap both ways.

4. Lower the flap a little at a time

When your cat is comfortable passing through the fully open flap, begin reducing the opening in small stages. Hold or secure it partly open, invite your cat through, and reward their progress. Gradually reduce the support until they can push the flap themselves and pass through with it closed. Cats Protection’s behaviour guide describes this gradual progression; some cats need repeated practice at each stage.

There is no universal session count or completion time in the guidance. Let your cat’s comfort set the pace. If they become worried or stop approaching, return to the last easier stage and try again later.

5. Troubleshoot reluctance in one direction

If your cat will go out but not come back in, check whether the route to the flap is easy to reach from outside. A small step may help with access, and nearby cover may make the approach feel more inviting. Also consider whether something indoors is discouraging your cat from returning. Cats Protection behaviour specialist Nicky Trevorrow suggested these checks and practicing with the flap pinned open so the cat learns to push it inward (Why Won’t My Cat Use Their Cat Flap?). These are possible adjustments, not guaranteed fixes.

6. Treat outdoor access as a separate decision

Learning to use a flap does not by itself mean a cat is ready to go outside. For kittens, Cats Protection advises waiting until they are settled, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped before outdoor access. Keep initial outings short and increase them gradually, following its kitten guidance.

Does the type of cat flap change the training?

Both a basic flap and a selective-entry flap need gradual acclimation. The difference is access control: a basic flap allows open access, while a microchip flap can be programmed to admit cats with selected microchip numbers. Cats Protection explains the selective-entry function in its microchipping advice. Consider whether you need to restrict visiting cats and check that the flap suits the installation and your cat’s route. A microchip feature does not replace training.

Before training, check that the flap can be held or secured open. Treats are optional: part of your cat’s usual food ration can also be used as a lure and reward. A clicker or special training book is not required for this gradual approach.
