The resemblance is visual and behavioral: both have long bodies, pointed heads, obvious teeth, and a habit of hunting other fish. It does not indicate a close taxonomic relationship. If you are considering one for an aquarium, confirm the scientific name before buying. A label that says only “barracuda,” “freshwater barracuda,” or “hujeta gar” is not enough to determine the fish’s adult size or care requirements.

Acestrorhynchus is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fishes in the family Acestrorhynchidae and the order Characiformes. These fish are also called pike characins, cachorro, and freshwater barracudas. They occur in South America, with particularly important diversity in the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the rivers of the Guianas. Representatives are also known from the Paraná, Paraguay, Uruguay, and São Francisco river systems.

FishBase’s genus listing currently recognizes 14 species of Acestrorhynchus. Its broader Acestrorhynchidae family listing contains 26 valid species because it also includes related genera such as Gilbertolus, Gnathocharax, Heterocharax, Hoplocharax, Lonchogenys, and Roestes. Those different totals are therefore a difference in scope, not necessarily a contradiction.
Freshwater barracuda versus a true barracuda
| Feature | Freshwater “barracuda” | True barracuda |
|---|---|---|
| Typical aquarium-market identity | Acestrorhynchus | Sphyraena, including Sphyraena barracuda |
| Family | Acestrorhynchidae | Sphyraenidae |
| Order | Characiformes | A different fish lineage |
| Water environment | Freshwater South American rivers and related habitats | Marine and brackish tropical or subtropical waters |
| Why the names overlap | Similar streamlined bodies, pointed jaws, prominent teeth, and predatory behavior | |
The great barracuda is a marine and brackish fish and can reach a published maximum of 200 cm total length. It is not a freshwater aquarium fish. Never rely on the word “barracuda” alone when identifying a listing; ask for the scientific name and intended water type.
Acestrorhynchus species and adult size
Species identification is essential because “freshwater barracuda” covers fish with meaningfully different adult sizes. The following published maximum lengths are useful reference points, but they are not promises that every specimen will reach that size.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Species | Common description or note | Published maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Acestrorhynchus falcatus | Often called the spotted cachorro or red-tailed freshwater barracuda | 30.0 cm total length |
| Acestrorhynchus falcirostris | A substantially larger member of the genus | 45.0 cm standard length |
| Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro | Associated with the Pantanal and surrounding South American systems | 35.2 cm total length |
| A. abbreviatus, A. altus, A. britskii, A. grandoculis, A. heterolepis, A. isalineae, A. lacustris, A. maculipinna, A. microlepis, A. minimus, and A. nasutus | Recognized species requiring individual identification and care research | |
These figures use two different measurements. Total length includes the caudal fin; standard length is measured from the snout to the base of the tail. A 45 cm standard-length fish should not be compared directly with a 30 cm total-length fish as if the measurements were identical.
Juveniles are especially deceptive in shops. A small fish may look suitable for a community aquarium while still having years of growth ahead. Plan for the identified species’ adult size—not the size at which it is offered for sale.
What do freshwater barracudas eat?
Acestrorhynchus species are active piscivores: fish make up an important part of their natural diet, and dietary research on A. falcatus and related species describes fish as the dominant food category in examined populations. Their narrow, pike-like bodies and tooth-bearing jaws are built for pursuing and catching prey.
That feeding strategy has immediate consequences in an aquarium. Small tetras, endlers, guppies, other livebearers, shrimp, juvenile fish, and similarly sized animals may be treated as food if they can fit in the predator’s mouth. A fish that is safe when the predator is a juvenile may become vulnerable as it grows.

Prepared food and feeder fish
A varied carnivorous diet is preferable to making live feeder fish the permanent default. Wild-caught specimens may need time to accept frozen or prepared foods, and individual feeding responses vary. Some fish transition readily; others require patient acclimation.
Suitable options may include appropriately sized frozen fish-based foods and carnivore-oriented prepared foods, offered according to the individual fish’s response and body condition. Do not assume that every specimen will accept pellets, and do not interpret a temporary refusal as proof that live feeder fish are the only workable diet. Avoid using feeder fish from questionable sources, since they can introduce disease and create nutritional problems; the research supports piscivory, but it does not support one universal feeding schedule for every species, age, or aquarium.
For aquarists transitioning a fish away from live prey, frozen fish food for predatory aquarium fish or carnivore pellets can be practical tools. Acceptance is individual, so introduce alternatives gradually and monitor whether the fish is actually eating.
Can Acestrorhynchus live in a home aquarium?
Yes, some species can be maintained by experienced aquarists, but they are generally a poor choice for a small or ordinary community aquarium. The main challenges are adult size, fast swimming, predation, jumping, oxygen demand associated with an active lifestyle, and the waste produced by a carnivorous fish.
Choose length before height
A long aquarium is more useful than a tall aquarium for an active, streamlined predator. One current care reference gives A. falcatus a starting tank length of approximately 150 cm and emphasizes open swimming space. Treat that as a species-specific starting point, not a universal minimum for every Acestrorhynchus.
A larger species such as A. falcirostris, a group of fish, or a mixed-species setup may require considerably more room. The aquarium must accommodate the fish’s adult length, turning space, swimming speed, filtration equipment, and a safe maintenance area. A tank volume or gallon number without the species, dimensions, and stocking plan gives a false sense of precision.
Design the aquarium around open swimming lanes
- Leave a clear lengthwise swimming corridor rather than filling the tank with dense decorations.
- Use subdued cover, plants, wood, or hardscape around the margins so the fish has security without losing its sprinting space.
- Fit a tight-fitting lid or mesh cover. Active predatory characins can jump when startled or during feeding.
- Provide moderate circulation and good dissolved oxygen, adjusting flow to the species and the fish’s behavior.
- Use filtration sized for the aquarium’s actual water volume and predatory bioload.
- Perform regular maintenance rather than assuming oversized equipment can compensate for inadequate tank volume or neglect.
A secure aquarium lid is a sensible safety item, but it must fit the aquarium precisely and leave safe openings for heaters, filters, airlines, and other equipment. “Jump-proof” is not a guarantee; inspect gaps after every equipment change.

- Wide Application: Ideal for use in water or high moisture environment like aquarium terrarium, or vivarium, suitable for different water types such as fresh water, tap water, salty water, marine water and etc.
- Easy to Read: Comes with a large LCD display that is easy to read clearly.
- Easy to Setup: Submerge probe with suction cup can easily be set in water. (Submerge probe only, do not submerge thermometer in water) Press ''PWR'' for 3 seconds to power off.

For the filtration load, a large aquarium canister filter may be an appropriate equipment category for a suitably sized predator aquarium. Filter ratings must be matched to the actual tank volume, stocking level, flow tolerance, and maintenance routine. No single filter model makes an undersized aquarium appropriate.

The dossier does not establish one universal temperature, pH, hardness range, flow rate, or water-change schedule for all species in this genus. Follow the requirements of the confirmed species and its collection history rather than applying a generic “freshwater barracuda” profile.
Because these are predatory fish with substantial meals and bioload, monitor the aquarium’s nitrogen cycle and watch for changes in appetite, breathing, swimming, and waste production. A freshwater aquarium water test kit can help track ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate during cycling and routine maintenance, but testing is useful only when paired with appropriate water changes, filtration, and stocking decisions.
Are freshwater barracudas compatible with other fish?
Compatibility is conditional, never guaranteed. Do not keep them with:
- small tetras or rasboras;
- guppies, endlers, and other small livebearers;
- shrimp and other small invertebrates;
- dwarf cichlids or juvenile fish that can be swallowed; or
- any fish whose adult size remains small compared with the predator’s mouth.
Potential tankmates must be large enough not to be swallowed, robust enough to tolerate the predator’s activity, and compatible in temperature, water chemistry, swimming level, and temperament. Large, peaceful-to-moderately assertive South American fishes may be considered in some situations, but the exact species and individual behavior matter. Even a fish that appears too large to eat can be injured, stressed, or attacked later.
Introduce no tankmate on the assumption that compatibility is permanent. Have a separation or rehoming plan before attempting a mixed aquarium, and be prepared to remove a fish immediately if chasing, repeated lunging, injuries, or feeding-related aggression develops.
Buying checklist: what to ask before purchasing
- What is the scientific name? Do not accept only “freshwater barracuda,” “barracuda,” “cachorro,” or “hujeta gar.”
- What is the verified adult size? Ask whether the source is quoting total length or standard length.
- Where was it collected? Collection locality can help resolve identification and informs responsible acclimation and care research.
- Is it captive-bred or wild-caught? Wild-caught fish may need additional acclimation and may initially resist prepared foods.
- What will it eat? Ask what the individual is currently accepting, while planning a varied diet rather than relying indefinitely on feeder fish.
- Can your aquarium provide a long, unobstructed swimming area? Measure the tank, do not judge suitability by the juvenile’s current length.
- Are your tankmates genuinely safe? Consider their adult size, not just their current size.
- Is possession and movement lawful where you live? Check your state or local wildlife agency and request lawful-source documentation from the seller.
- What is your rehoming plan? Identify a capable aquarist, public aquarium, or specialist facility before the fish outgrows your setup.
Conservation and legal considerations
Distribution and species-level biology do not automatically answer whether a fish may be possessed or transported. There is no single current U.S.-wide rule established here that covers every Acestrorhynchus species. Requirements can differ by state, locality, species, and import route.

Before purchase, verify current regulations with the relevant wildlife authority and obtain documentation showing lawful sourcing. Do not release an unwanted fish into a river, lake, canal, or storm drain. If the aquarium is no longer suitable, contact an experienced aquarist, reputable retailer, rescue organization, or public aquarium about a responsible transfer.
Bottom line
“Freshwater barracuda” usually means an Acestrorhynchus pike characin—not a true marine barracuda. These are attractive, fast, fish-eating predators that can suit an experienced aquarist with a long, covered aquarium and a carefully planned stocking strategy. They are not appropriate for a small community tank, and the correct setup cannot be chosen until the exact species and adult size are confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are freshwater barracudas actually freshwater fish?
Usually, yes. Fish sold as freshwater barracudas generally belong to the freshwater South American genus Acestrorhynchus. True barracudas, such as Sphyraena barracuda, are marine or brackish fish in the separate family Sphyraenidae.
Are freshwater barracudas related to true barracudas?
No. Acestrorhynchus and Sphyraena are different lineages. They share a streamlined shape, pointed head, teeth, and predatory behavior, which explains the common name.
Can I keep an Acestrorhynchus in a community tank?
Some species can be kept by experienced aquarists, but they are not suitable for a small or typical community aquarium. They need substantial horizontal swimming space, a secure lid, strong biological filtration, and tankmates too large to swallow.
How big do freshwater barracudas get?
That depends on the species. Published maximums include 30.0 cm total length for Acestrorhynchus falcatus, 35.2 cm total length for A. pantaneiro, and 45.0 cm standard length for A. falcirostris. These measurements are not directly interchangeable, so identify the exact species first.

What fish can live with a freshwater barracuda?
No. Small tetras, livebearers, shrimp, dwarf cichlids, and other animals that fit in the predator’s mouth may be eaten. Larger tankmates are only conditional possibilities because individual behavior and size differences matter.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Freshwater barracudas are usually Acestrorhynchus species, not true Sphyraena barracudas. Confirm the scientific name, plan for the adult size, provide a long covered aquarium, and assume that small tankmates may become prey.
