Short answer: A Bourke’s parakeet can be a good first bird for a prepared owner who wants a relatively quiet, small companion and accepts that the bird may be nervous and less hands-on than a cuddly species. It is not a universally “perfect” beginner pet. Success depends on providing flight-friendly housing, daily care and enrichment, a suitable diet, and prompt access to an avian veterinarian.
Merck Veterinary Manual groups Bourke’s with grass parakeets: they are small, quiet and usually not aggressive, but tend to be nervous and generally do not talk. That combination suits a calm household with realistic expectations better than someone seeking a reliably affectionate, highly interactive bird.

What a Bourke’s parakeet is like as a first bird
Bourke’s parakeet (Neopsephotus bourkii) is an Australian grass parakeet. The Australian Museum records an adult length of 19–23 cm and a range across inland arid and semi-arid parts of Australia. In the wild, Bourke’s usually forage on the ground for grass and herb seeds, travel in pairs or small groups, and visit water most often around dawn and dusk. Those observations explain some of the species’ habits, but they are not a complete captive-care prescription.

For a first-time owner, the key point is temperament rather than appearance. A Bourke’s may be gentle and comparatively quiet without being eager to sit on a hand. Merck describes grass parakeets as generally not aggressive, while also warning that they tend to be nervous. A bird that freezes, retreats or takes time to trust people is not necessarily unhealthy or unfriendly; it may simply need slower introductions and predictable routines.

Individual personality, early socialization, previous handling and health all matter. No species label can guarantee that a particular bird will be tame, affectionate, easy to train or comfortable with frequent handling. Choose the individual and the care plan, not just the name of the species.
Who is likely to be a good match?
- An owner who can observe body language and build trust gradually.
- A household that values a smaller, quieter bird more than constant conversation or physical affection.
- Someone able to provide a large, safe enclosure, supervised out-of-cage time and daily enrichment.
- A person who can budget for routine supplies and veterinary care and locate an avian veterinarian before adoption.
Who may be disappointed?
If your priority is a bird that reliably talks, seeks cuddling or tolerates immediate handling, a Bourke’s may not meet that expectation. Merck says grass parakeets generally do not talk, and the available evidence does not support promises about cuddliness or trainability.
Noise: quiet, not silent
Bourke’s parakeets are often considered a quieter choice than many parrots. The Australian Museum describes a mellow, soft chirruping twitter during flight and a shrill double-note alarm call. The difference matters: normal contact sounds may be gentle, while fear, excitement or an alarm can be noticeably sharper.
Noise also varies between individuals and situations. A bird may vocalize at dawn, when household activity changes, when it hears another bird or when it is startled. “Quiet” should therefore mean relatively moderate vocal volume for a parrot, not silence or a guarantee that neighbors will never hear it. Spend time listening to the individual bird before committing if possible.

The lifespan and time commitment
Merck Veterinary Manual gives grass parakeets, the group that includes Bourke’s, a typical lifespan of 8–13 years (2025). This is a group-level average, not a promise for an individual bird. Genetics, nutrition, housing, accidents and access to veterinary treatment can all affect longevity.
That lifespan requires planning beyond the novelty of bringing a bird home. Consider who will provide care during holidays, moves, illness or changes in work hours. A Bourke’s still needs daily observation, fresh food and water, enclosure maintenance, social contact and opportunities to move and forage even when you are busy.
Housing: plan for movement and safety
The enclosure is the largest physical purchase and one of the most important welfare decisions. The CDC advises using a safe, sturdy enclosure and notes that a large enclosure gives birds room to fly within the cage. A species-specific care article recommends a large, preferably long, indoor flight cage for Bourke’s parakeets.

Features to evaluate when shopping
- Length and usable flight space: A long layout supports horizontal movement better than a cramped, tall cage.
- Construction: Look for sturdy, non-toxic materials, secure doors and a design that cannot be bent or opened by the bird.
- Cleanability: Removable trays and washable surfaces make daily hygiene more realistic.
- Perch arrangement: Place perches so the bird can move without having to sit over food or water, while leaving an unobstructed route for short flights.
- Location: Keep the cage away from kitchen fumes and food-preparation areas, direct drafts and hazards such as open windows, ceiling fans or accessible electrical cords.
A flight cage is a home base, not a substitute for exercise. The Bourke’s care article discusses daily out-of-cage time, attention, foraging opportunities, toys and bathing water. Any out-of-cage session must be supervised in a bird-proofed room: close doors and windows, turn off fans, remove toxic plants and keep other pets separated.
Enrichment for a cautious, active bird
Nervous birds usually do better with predictable, low-pressure interaction. Begin by sitting near the cage, speaking calmly and offering rewards without chasing or cornering the bird. Watch for relaxed posture and voluntary approach; back off when the bird leans away, pants, freezes or repeatedly flees.
Rotate safe small-parrot toys so the environment stays interesting without becoming cluttered. Foraging activities can encourage natural searching behavior: hide a small amount of the bird’s approved food in an easy-to-access paper or cardboard activity, then increase difficulty only when the bird is confident. Inspect toys frequently for frayed fibers, loose parts or chew damage.
Bathing preferences vary. The species-care article includes bathing water among enrichment options, but a bird should never be forced into water or left with a container deep enough to create a drowning risk. Provide a safe, shallow option and remove it if the bird is frightened or the water becomes dirty.

Food: use natural history as context, not a formula
In the wild, Bourke’s parakeets feed mainly on grass and herb seeds. In captivity, the species-care article discusses pellets, seeds, and fresh vegetables and fruit. Those sources do not establish one universally correct ratio for every pet, so ask an avian veterinarian to assess the bird’s current diet and recommend any transition.
Build a feeding plan with your veterinarian
- Ask what the bird is eating at the breeder, rescue or shop and obtain the exact product names where possible.
- Arrange a veterinary review before making major diet changes, especially if the bird is thin, lethargic or has abnormal droppings.
- Introduce unfamiliar foods gradually while monitoring appetite, droppings, weight and behavior.
- Provide fresh, clean drinking water and wash food and water dishes every day.
- Remove spoiled fresh produce promptly and prevent the bird from accessing household foods, fumes or surfaces contaminated with cleaning chemicals.
Do not infer that a seed-based wild diet means an all-seed captive diet is suitable. Captive energy needs, food processing and individual health differ from conditions in the Australian interior.

Merck recommends having a bird examined by a veterinarian experienced with birds before bringing it home when possible. The CDC advises identifying an avian veterinarian in advance and taking a new bird for a visit within a few days of purchase or adoption.
Before bringing the bird home
- Call the clinic and confirm that it treats pet birds, accepts new patients and can handle urgent appointments.
- Ask what records to bring, including hatch or adoption information, prior examinations and diet details.
- Set up the enclosure, food, water and a quiet settling-in area before collection day.
- Plan safe transport in a secure carrier rather than carrying the bird loose.
Birds often conceal illness. Changes in appetite, droppings, breathing, posture, balance or activity warrant a prompt call to the veterinarian rather than a wait-and-see approach. A first examination also establishes a baseline and lets you discuss weight monitoring, parasite concerns, nutrition and household hazards.

A practical first-week plan
- Prepare the room: Remove toxic fumes, open-water hazards, fans, unsafe plants and access points to other pets. Keep the cage away from food preparation areas, as CDC guidance recommends.
- Set up the enclosure: Install secure perches, dishes and enrichment while leaving room for movement. Confirm the cage design with an avian professional if measurements or bar spacing are uncertain.
- Allow a quiet arrival: Keep the first sessions calm and let the bird observe before attempting handling.
- Track normal behavior: Note eating, drinking, droppings, sleep, vocalizations and activity so changes are easier to identify.
- Schedule the check: Follow the CDC’s recommendation for a veterinary visit within a few days and bring diet and care notes.
- Build trust gradually: Use short, positive interactions. Never grab, chase or punish a frightened bird.
- Add supervised flight time: Once the room is secure and the bird is settling, introduce out-of-cage activity at a pace the bird can manage.
How Bourke’s compares with your expectations
| Decision factor | What the evidence supports | What you should plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Temperament | Usually not aggressive; tends to be nervous | Slow trust-building and careful body-language reading |
| Noise | Relatively quiet; soft chirruping flight call and sharper alarm call | Moderate parrot noise, with individual variation |
| Talking | Grass parakeets generally do not talk | Choose the species for companionship, not speech |
| Size | 19–23 cm, according to the Australian Museum | A small-parrot enclosure that still permits safe movement |
| Lifespan | 8–13 years for grass parakeets, according to Merck’s 2025 guidance | A decade-scale commitment to care and veterinary costs |
| Housing | Large, sturdy enclosure; a long flight cage is recommended by the species-care article | Verify dimensions and bar spacing with an avian professional |
| Diet | Captive-care discussion includes pellets, seeds, vegetables and fruit | Individualized feeding advice and gradual diet changes |
Merck advises prospective owners to weigh care needs, noise, size, cost, cage requirements and available time when choosing a bird. That framework is more useful than ranking one species as universally best for beginners.
Common first-owner mistakes
- Assuming quiet means easy: A quieter bird still needs daily care, enrichment, exercise and medical planning.
- Buying the smallest cage that fits the bird: Use the largest safe enclosure you can maintain and verify its design rather than relying on a generic size label.
- Forcing interaction: Chasing a nervous bird can damage trust and increase fear.
- Changing food abruptly: Sudden diet changes can reduce intake; transition with veterinary guidance.
- Skipping the avian-vet search: Finding a clinic after an emergency is harder than arranging care before adoption.
- Treating wild behavior as a captive diet prescription: Natural-history information explains what the species does in Australia but does not replace individualized nutrition advice.
Verdict: good first bird for the right beginner
A Bourke’s parakeet is a reasonable first-bird choice when “good” means relatively quiet, small and generally non-aggressive, and when the owner is comfortable with a potentially timid companion. It is a poor match for anyone who expects guaranteed talking, instant tameness or a cuddly personality.
Use the CDC’s rule as your final test: “Match a bird’s attitude, temperament, size, activity level, and life span with your lifestyle.” If you can provide a spacious safe enclosure, daily enrichment and supervised activity, an appropriate feeding plan, and an avian veterinarian, a Bourke’s may fit your household well. If those commitments are not realistic, waiting is kinder than choosing a bird on the promise that it will be “perfect.”
