No—cats are not omnivores in the usual nutritional classification. They are obligate carnivores, meaning their bodies depend on nutrients found in animal products. That does not mean every ingredient in a suitable cat food must come from an animal. What matters is that the finished food supplies cats’ essential nutrients in the right amounts and proportions for their life stage.
What does “obligate carnivore” mean for cats?
“Obligate carnivore” describes cats’ nutritional needs and metabolic adaptations, not a rule that every ingredient they eat must be meat. Cats have specific requirements for nutrients found in animal products. For example, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) notes that cats require taurine and pre-formed vitamin A—nutritional distinctions between cats and dogs. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine puts it this way: “Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they rely on nutrients found only in animal products.”

This classification does not establish that cats cannot digest plant ingredients, nor does it determine whether a particular food is adequate. The adequacy of a food depends on its full formulation, not on whether one ingredient sounds animal- or plant-based.

Start with the nutritional adequacy statement on the package—not a shortcut based on the ingredient list or front-of-bag claims. Look for food identified for cats, a “complete and balanced” claim, and the life stage it is intended to support. FDA guidance explains that a complete-and-balanced claim is supported by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing an AAFCO feeding trial. AAFCO describes “complete” as containing all required nutrients and “balanced” as providing them in the correct ratios.

Life stage matters because nutrient needs differ. AAFCO identifies food categories for growth, maintenance, gestation and lactation, and all life stages. Choose a formula whose adequacy statement matches your cat’s needs; ask your veterinarian for guidance if your cat has a medical condition or you are unsure which category applies.
When comparing guaranteed analysis figures, remember they are stated “as fed,” while nutrient profiles use a dry-matter basis. Water content can make percentages look quite different between formats. FDA says canned pet food is typically 75–78% moisture and dry pet food typically 10–12%; those are general reference figures, not specifications for every product. Its illustrative comparison gives 26% dry-matter crude protein as the AAFCO minimum for adult-cat maintenance. That example is not a recommendation to judge foods by crude protein alone.

Does being a carnivore mean cats need only meat?
No. Meat alone is not the same thing as a nutritionally complete diet. Cats require essential nutrients in specific amounts and proportions, and a meat-only or improvised homemade diet can fail to provide them. Cornell notes that homemade cat food is difficult to balance and generally recommends nutritionally balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian recommends a home-formulated recipe for a medical purpose.

Does a carnivore diet mean cats should eat raw food?
No. Cats’ nutritional classification is not a reason to feed raw meat. Cornell says evidence that raw or gently cooked diets provide health benefits is lacking, warns that raw diets can carry viable infectious agents, and does not recommend feeding them. AAHA and the American Association of Feline Practitioners also do not advocate raw or dehydrated non-sterilized foods.
For a therapeutic or home-prepared diet, consult your veterinarian; a veterinary nutritionist may be appropriate. The right feeding plan depends on the individual cat’s life stage, body condition, activity, and health.

Does dry, canned, or semi-moist food make a difference?
Once you have confirmed that a food is complete and balanced for the right life stage, choose a format that suits your cat and your household. No format is universally best. Cornell identifies differences in moisture, protein, caloric density, palatability, and digestibility, and notes that cats’ preferences vary.
