Yes. Spaying does not automatically stop a cat from breastfeeding: Cats Protection’s 2024 veterinary guide says a lactating cat can be spayed and that the procedure does not prolong lactation. Whether her kittens can nurse immediately after surgery depends on her recovery, incision, and the surgeon’s instructions, so make a nursing plan with the clinic that performs the operation.

Can kittens nurse after their mother is spayed?

Often, nursing can continue, but do not assume kittens should have access to the mother as soon as she comes home. Ask the operating veterinarian when nursing may resume and how to keep kittens from pressing, licking, or catching the incision. The answer can depend on the procedure and how alert and comfortable the mother is.

VCA discusses kittens nursing after their mother is sufficiently awake following a C-section and advises contacting a veterinarian about incision concerns. A C-section is not the same as a routine spay, so this is useful context—not a universal post-spay protocol. Follow the instructions from the clinic responsible for your cat’s surgery.

When should a cat be spayed after having kittens?

There is no single deadline that fits every cat and litter. Cats Protection gives two general recommendations for different contexts:

  • HEALTHY FOUNDATION: A kitten is a kitten for 12 months, no matter their size; keeping them on this formula from 1 to 4 months (after weaning) helps set up a healthy foundation for kittenhood
Guidance Timing Context
Cats Protection veterinary guide, 2024 Usually from six weeks after kittening Timing for female cats in its care; the guide also says a queen can be spayed while lactating.
Cats Protection public after-birth advice Around eight weeks after birth, once kittens are fully weaned General owner guidance; the page’s publication date is not stated.

These are context-dependent recommendations, not contradictory rules or a universal deadline. Discuss the mother’s health and stage of lactation, kittens’ age and feeding independence, risk of another pregnancy, and the proposed surgery and recovery arrangements with your veterinarian. Cats Protection’s veterinary guide recommends neutering lactating feral queens; do not apply feral-cat return-to-site protocols to a household cat without veterinary direction.

How to protect the incision and keep kittens fed

Before surgery, agree on nursing access

  • Ask the surgeon when kittens may be allowed to nurse and how to prevent them from disturbing the incision.
  • Confirm how to handle the mother’s activity, incision care, and prescribed medicines. The operating clinic’s instructions take priority.
  • Ask what to do if the kittens cannot nurse while she recovers, or if they seem not to be getting enough milk.

After surgery, monitor the mother and litter

Keep the recovering cat in a quiet, confined area if that is what the clinic advises, and check the surgical site as instructed. ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance advises contacting the clinic for lethargy lasting more than 24 hours, vomiting, or diarrhea. Follow the operating clinic’s own thresholds and contact it promptly about incision concerns or any recovery problem.

If kittens cannot nurse or appear not to be feeding adequately, contact a veterinarian promptly. VCA notes that a veterinarian can supply commercial kitten milk replacer when needed, including when kittens cannot nurse or the mother initially has insufficient milk. This is a contingency, not something every post-spay litter needs.

What should a nursing cat eat while recovering?

VCA says a nursing cat can continue food formulated for gestation and lactation or a diet labeled for all life stages. Ask the veterinarian whether that remains appropriate for your cat during recovery and how much to offer; individual needs vary.
