Yes. Corn plants (Dracaena fragrans) are toxic to cats. ASPCA identifies saponins as the toxic principle and lists vomiting, depression, loss of appetite, excessive drooling, and dilated pupils among possible signs. If your cat may have chewed or swallowed any part of one, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly for advice specific to your cat and the exposure.

How to identify a corn plant

The ASPCA lists Dracaena fragrans under the common names corn plant, cornstalk plant, Dracaena, dragon tree, and ribbon plant. If you are unsure whether the plant your cat encountered is a Dracaena, share a clear photo or the plant label with your veterinarian or poison-control specialist rather than relying on a common name alone. ASPCA’s corn plant listing provides the plant identification.

Is a corn plant poisonous to cats?

Yes. The ASPCA classifies corn plant as toxic to cats and identifies saponins as its toxic principle. Pet Poison Helpline also lists Dracaena as toxic to pets. Neither source establishes a safe amount a cat can chew or swallow, so do not treat a small-looking bite as proof that the exposure is harmless.

Pet Poison Helpline also reports a wobbly gait with Dracaena exposure. These lists are not a way to diagnose or rule out poisoning: contact a professional after suspected ingestion, whether or not signs have appeared. If your cat is showing symptoms, seek prompt veterinary advice.

Can the amount eaten affect how sick a cat becomes?

ASPCA’s general Dracaena guidance says small exposures usually cause mild vomiting or diarrhea, while larger exposures can be associated with depression, weakness, and lack of coordination. This is broad guidance, not a dose chart or a prediction for an individual cat. The sources do not provide a corn-plant-specific threshold for a dangerous amount, incidence rate, or recovery statistic; a veterinarian or poison-control specialist must assess the particular cat and suspected exposure. ASPCA’s houseplant guidance describes the general Dracaena severity range.

What to do if your cat ate a corn plant

  1. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Describe the plant, the possible time and amount of exposure, and any changes you have noticed. ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control after suspected ingestion; Pet Poison Helpline advises seeking immediate veterinary treatment or expert assistance.
  2. Have the plant information ready. If available, keep the label or take a photo so the professional can help confirm the identification.
  3. Follow the professional’s case-specific instructions. The sources do not establish an at-home treatment protocol, so do not substitute a home remedy or an estimate of the amount chewed for professional advice.

ASPCA lists Poison Control at (888) 426-4435; a consultation fee may apply. Pet Poison Helpline lists (855) 764-7661. Check each service’s current contact information and availability when you call.
