Yes—bird mites can infest cats, but it appears to be unusual. A peer-reviewed case report documented the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, in three cats. That finding does not mean cats are a normal host for bird mites, or that every mite associated with birds can live on cats. Itching or tiny specks in a cat’s coat cannot identify the mite; a veterinarian can examine and, when needed, test a sample.
What the evidence says about bird mites and cats
Common bird mites include northern fowl mites (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) and chicken mites, also called poultry red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae). They are normally associated with poultry, wild birds, and nests. University of Minnesota Extension describes them as parasites of poultry and wild birds and notes that they may be found in the environment away from a host.

The feline evidence is specific: a 2018 peer-reviewed case report documented D. gallinae infestation in three cats. Two were 40-day-old kittens with chronic blood loss. For the indoor cat in the report, the authors presumed mites had been brought by birds that regularly visited the apartment balcony. This shows that cat infestation is possible, including after indirect exposure around a home; it does not establish how often it occurs or whether other bird-mite species infest cats.

University of Minnesota Extension reports that northern fowl mites complete their life cycle on a host in 5–12 days and can persist off-host for 2–3 weeks. Those figures concern northern fowl mite biology, not how long mites remain on a cat or how long a feline infestation lasts.

How to tell whether a cat has bird mites
Itching, irritated skin, hair loss, or visible specks are clues to a skin problem, not proof of bird mites. Cats can also have other mite infestations, including feline scabies, ear mites, walking dandruff, and trombiculosis. Other skin conditions can cause similar signs.
A nearby bird nest, poultry area, or pet bird is useful exposure context, especially if signs began after birds had access to a balcony or other part of the home. But exposure history and symptoms cannot identify the parasite. Merck Veterinary Manual lists skin scraping, tape testing, and flea combing among methods that may help a veterinarian investigate feline mites; identification may require examination and laboratory work.

What to do if you suspect bird mites
- Contact your veterinarian. Describe the itching, lesions, hair loss, or moving specks, and mention nearby nests, poultry, or pet birds. Ask whether a sample should be examined before treatment.
- Do not apply household insecticide to your cat. Treatment depends on which parasite is present, and some insecticides are poisonous to cats. Get veterinary guidance before using any product on the animal.
- Inspect the coat only as a preliminary check. A fine-tooth flea comb may help collect or spot material, but it cannot confirm bird-mite species or treat an infestation.
- If bird mites are confirmed in the home, address the source. Look for bird access points or an abandoned nest. University of Minnesota Extension recommends physical removal for mites in homes, following product labels if products are used, and notes that professional pest-management help is another option. Follow local wildlife rules if a nest may contain eggs or young birds.
What a confirmed case does—and does not—mean
A confirmed D. gallinae case would show that this bird-associated mite can infest a cat; it would not make cats its usual host. The published feline evidence is a case report rather than a population study, so it cannot provide a prevalence estimate. The available sources also do not establish a cat-specific treatment approved for bird-mite exposure. A veterinarian’s identification and safety guidance are therefore important before treating the cat.
