Photographer and animal advocate Dolph Volker was reportedly napping beneath a tree at Cheetah Experience, a South African breeding centre, when he woke to find a cheetah named Eden beside him. Retellings say she nuzzled, licked and gently nibbled him. The encounter was reported as a close interaction with a cheetah at a centre—not evidence that a wild cheetah curled up with a stranger.
What was reported about the nap?
Accounts published by Indian Defence Review on December 19, 2024, and Belles and Gals on October 29, 2024, describe Volker falling asleep under a tree at Cheetah Experience in South Africa and waking beside Eden. Both are secondary retellings. The sources reviewed do not independently establish the exact date of the nap or verify every detail of the sequence.
That distinction matters: the story’s familiar headline wording can make the encounter sound like an unexpected meeting with a wild cheetah. The reported location was instead Cheetah Experience, a facility associated with captive-bred animals.
Was the cheetah wild?
The nap retelling does not establish that Eden was wild, and readers should not describe her that way. Africa Check traced related viral footage featuring Volker to Cheetah Experience, an endangered-animal breeding centre in Bloemfontein. Its fact-check describes the cheetahs in that footage as captive-bred and accustomed to close human contact. That finding concerns the related footage; it is not independent confirmation of every detail in the nap story.

A cheetah accustomed to people in a managed setting is not a guide to how a wild cheetah behaves. This anecdote does not show that approaching, touching or sleeping near a cheetah is safe. It is not an interaction to imitate.
What does the story tell us about cheetahs?
At most, the reported encounter offers a glimpse of a particular animal’s behavior in a human-managed setting. It cannot establish that cheetahs generally seek affection from people. A historical article by Reshareworthy attributes comments about cheetahs’ personalities to Volker, including his explicit qualification that he was referring to “the tamed ones.” That is his personal account, not a scientific generalization.

More broadly, a compelling close-up story is not a substitute for conservation context. The Cheetah Conservation Fund lists human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss and illegal pet and wildlife trade among the species’ main threats. Those pressures are more relevant to the species’ future than treating an individual encounter as proof that cheetahs make suitable companions.

The linked IUCN Red List assessment labels the cheetah Vulnerable and records a declining population trend. The assessment is dated 2014 and was published in 2015; it estimated 6,674 mature individuals, with estimates explicitly described as approximate. That figure belongs to the assessment, not to a verified 2026 census, so it should not be presented as a current population count.
