As of the latest explicit multi-beach report retrieved, published by ABC News on 3 October 2026, City Beach, Floreat Beach and Swanbourne Beach were closed, while Cottesloe beaches were reported open. That report did not confirm that North Cottesloe Beach itself was closed. Because beach conditions can change, check the current SharkSmart alerts and obey signs and directions at the beach before entering the water.

Which beaches were reported closed?

ABC News reported on 3 October 2026 that City Beach, Floreat Beach and Swanbourne Beach were closed. The same report said Cottesloe beaches were open at that time. It did not establish that North Cottesloe Beach was among the closed locations, so do not treat the headline’s mention of North Cottesloe as confirmation of its status.

Why were beaches closed?

A whale carcass washed ashore at City Beach in late September 2026, and sharks were seen nearby. ABC News reported that the carcass could attract sharks close to shore. On 28 September, Surf Life Saving WA closed a stretch of City Beach from near the Floreat Drain car park to south of Bodmin Avenue. Later reporting listed City, Floreat and Swanbourne as closed.

The reports described individual sightings, not a current shark count or a measure of general risk. On 28 September, two white sharks were estimated at five metres and four metres and seen about ten metres offshore. Reports also described a 3.5-metre shark of unknown species and another unknown shark estimated at 2.5 metres near the carcass. These were dated observations reported by ABC News, citing SharkSmart and Surf Life Saving WA.

How to check before swimming

  1. Check SharkSmart before setting out. Use the current alerts on the SharkSmart website; the SharkSmart WA app provides near-real-time activity information and alerts. An alert may change after a news report is published.
  2. Check the beach when you arrive. Read closure signs and follow instructions from local government rangers and Surf Life Saving WA. Do not enter the water at a closed beach, even if other nearby beaches are open. The Town of Cottesloe says, “When beaches are closed due to shark sighting or incident, please abide by signage and do not enter the water.” See its beach guidance.
  3. Report a sighting. Call Water Police on 9442 8600. DPIRD says the line is staffed 24/7 and reports can prompt responses such as beach closures. Details are on SharkSmart’s reporting guidance.
