A PerthNow report published on 11 September 2024 said a shark estimated at 3.5 metres and identified in the report as a great white was seen about three kilometres offshore from Cottesloe Beach. The reported size and species have not been independently confirmed by the official sources reviewed. This is a historical report, not a current shark alert.

What was reported at Cottesloe Beach

PerthNow reporter Kayla Sellwood’s story, published at 5:48 pm on 11 September 2024, said the sighting occurred at about 11:30 am that Wednesday. It placed the shark approximately three kilometres from shore and urged beachgoers to remain cautious. The report does not say the shark was close to swimmers. Its “lurking” headline wording should not be taken as a verified description of the animal’s behaviour. PerthNow’s report

The estimated length and great-white identification are details attributed to PerthNow, not an independently confirmed measurement or identification in the official information reviewed. No incident-specific official confirmation or quotation was found in that material.

What the monitoring outage meant

The PerthNow story also reported that the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) had advised of a partial outage affecting the Shark Monitoring Network receiver at Bickley Point. Tagged-shark detections from that receiver were offline at the time. The story said visitors to Rottnest Island were asked to take extra care and follow closures while the system was restored.

This was a contemporaneous issue reported in September 2024. It does not establish that Bickley Point’s receiver is offline now, nor does it confirm or disprove the Cottesloe sighting. The story gave Water Police at 9442 8600 as the number for reporting a shark sighting.

How to check conditions and respond to a closure

  1. Check SharkSmart WA’s current alerts and activity information, or its app, for updates. The app listing describes near-real-time shark activity information, alerts, warnings and coastal-location features; these are information tools, not a guarantee of safety. SharkSmart WA app listing
  2. Check the Town of Cottesloe’s beach information and look for local closure signs.
  3. If a beach is closed, stay out of the water and follow the directions on signs and from officials. The Town states: “When beaches are closed due to shark sighting or incident, please abide by signage and do not enter the water.”
  4. To report a sighting, SharkSmart advises contacting Water Police on 9442 8600. Follow current official instructions if they differ from information in the 2024 news report. SharkSmart WA guidance

Safety measures at Cottesloe are not a substitute for closure advice

The Town of Cottesloe describes two Spectur Shark Warning Systems, at the Cove surf break and North Cottesloe, as well as BEN signs, a protected swimming enclosure and beach patrols. Their presence provides safety context; it does not mean a beach is safe to enter during a closure. Check live official information and obey closure signage.

In a statement dated 11 September 2024, the Western Australian Government said Surf Life Saving WA helicopter crews had spent almost 1,000 patrol hours over popular Perth and South West beaches during the 2023/24 season. The statement also reported more than 179,000 SharkSmart WA app downloads and a $400,000 commitment for a replacement Cottesloe beach enclosure. That was a reported commitment, not confirmation that replacement work was complete. These statewide and beach-safety figures provide general context; they do not verify the particular sighting.
