If your cat ate one, may have been bitten, or is acting unwell, contact a veterinarian for advice based on the animal, location, and symptoms. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote unless a veterinary professional directs you to.
What are the risks if a cat encounters a gecko?
The concern depends on what happened. Eating a lizard can expose a cat to illness or parasites; a bite from a particular venomous lizard is a separate and uncommon emergency pathway. The reviewed veterinary sources do not establish how often cats become ill after eating geckos, nor do they establish a universal safety claim for every gecko species.

Eating a gecko or lizard
A veterinary source describes liver-fluke infection in cats that eat anoles, which can serve as an intermediate host for the parasite. This example is specific to anoles; it does not show that geckos generally carry liver flukes. The parasite is described in the southern United States and Hawaii, as well as tropical and subtropical regions elsewhere. Geography and identification of the reptile therefore matter.
The cited veterinarian says the fluke matures over eight to 12 weeks, and signs may not appear for many months—or may never appear. Possible signs include weight loss, a swollen abdomen, fever, lethargy, hiding, vomiting, diarrhea, and jaundice. These signs have many possible causes and do not by themselves show that a gecko caused an illness.

A suspected bite
PetMD’s veterinary guidance discusses venomous bites from Gila monsters and Mexican beaded lizards. These are not geckos, and their venom should not be confused with an ordinary gecko encounter. If you suspect your cat was bitten by one of these lizards, seek veterinary care urgently. Possible venom-toxicity signs include bleeding, swelling, excessive salivation, weakness, low blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, and severe pain.
Salmonella and handling
The CDC says geckos can carry Salmonella in their droppings while appearing clean and healthy. Its guidance is about preventing human infection and does not quantify the risk to cats that catch geckos. If you handle a gecko or its droppings, wash your hands with soap and water.

What to do if your cat ate a gecko
- Call your veterinarian. Explain what happened, when it happened, where you are, and whether your cat has symptoms. Call promptly if the reptile is unidentified, the amount eaten is unclear, or your cat seems unwell.
- Share a photo if you already have one. An image may help the veterinary team identify the reptile. Do not handle an unknown animal to get a photo.
- Watch for changes and follow veterinary advice. A cat may not show signs immediately in the anole-associated liver-fluke example; a veterinarian can advise whether follow-up is appropriate for your cat’s exposure.
- Do not try home treatment. Do not induce vomiting or give an antidote unless a veterinarian or animal poison-control professional instructs you to.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent veterinary advice for a suspected bite from a known venomous lizard or if your cat develops concerning symptoms after an encounter. For a possible exposure without obvious symptoms, call your veterinarian for individualized guidance rather than assuming the cat is safe or waiting for a particular sign.

The FDA lists an emergency animal hospital or animal poison-control service as options for pet emergencies. Its listed U.S. services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and charge fees. Confirm current service terms directly with the provider.
