There is no good evidence that ginger cats are inherently friendlier than cats of other colors. People often perceive orange cats as sociable, and one small survey found that owners rated orange cats highly for friendliness, calmness, and trainability. But those findings do not show that orange fur causes a particular personality. A cat’s own behavior, socialization, and environment are more useful guides than coat color.
Why do people say orange cats are friendly?
Part of the reputation may come from what people expect to see. In a 2012 study of perceptions about cat coat colors, respondents tended to rate orange cats relatively high in friendliness and low in aloofness and shyness compared with some other colors. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) also summarizes an earlier survey of 189 people in which participants consistently labeled orange cats “friendly.” These studies measured human beliefs about cats, not the cats’ behavior themselves. AAHA’s review discusses both findings.
What do owners’ ratings show?
A 2022 survey asked 211 cat owners in Mexico to rate their own cats on personality traits using a seven-point scale. Among the coat-color groups in that sample, orange cats received the highest reported ratings for trainability, friendliness, and calmness. The result is worth noting, but it is not a universal ranking: it reflects owners’ reports in one limited sample, and it cannot show that coat color caused those traits. The study in Animals describes color and personality as an area that needs further research.
Does research find orange cats are more aggressive?
One frequently cited study examined reported aggression, not general friendliness. Stelow, Bain, and Kass received responses from 1,432 cat guardians and analyzed 1,274 completed surveys. They found more frequent human-directed aggression in some settings for sex-linked orange females—tortoiseshells, calicos, and torbies—as well as for black-and-white and gray-and-white cats. They found little difference among coat colors for aggression during handling and veterinary visits. This finding concerns selected behaviors, settings, and coat patterns; it does not support a blanket claim that orange cats are aggressive or unfriendly. See the PubMed record for the study.

Does orange-cat genetics explain personality?
No personality effect has been established. Orange fur is associated with an X-linked deletion in the ARHGAP36 gene, as described in a 2025 Kyushu University research release. A male cat can be orange with the orange variant on its single X chromosome. A female generally needs the orange variant on both X chromosomes to be fully orange; inheriting one orange and one black variant can produce a tortoiseshell or calico coat. The research release describes an initial DNA comparison involving 18 cats and examination of the pattern in 49 additional cats. These genetics explain coat color, not temperament. The study’s lead author said there was not yet scientific evidence linking coat color and personality. Kyushu University’s release explains the finding.

Meet the individual cat and pay attention to how it behaves with you and in its surroundings. Coat color is not a reliable way to predict whether a cat will seek attention, enjoy handling, or settle comfortably into your home. Socialization and environment also shape personality, and studies use different color categories and questions, making their results difficult to treat as a single verdict. AAHA’s May 2026 review concludes that scientists have not settled whether coat color and personality are truly linked. Feline behavior expert Mikel Delgado advises prospective adopters to get to know the cat in front of them rather than choosing by color.
