Before bringing foster kittens home, get their individual care plan and emergency contact from the shelter or rescue. Your daily work may include feeding, warmth, cleaning, weighing, observation, and socialization; the exact schedule depends on each kitten’s age and condition and on the organization’s procedures.

Start with your foster organization’s plan

Ask the foster coordinator for the kitten’s age estimate, health and medical status, feeding instructions, appointment schedule, supplies, and whom to contact after hours. Confirm whether the organization expects you to keep the kittens isolated from resident pets and what to do if a kitten misses a feed or seems unwell. Shelter procedures differ; for example, Best Friends’ Kitten Foster Manual is written for its Utah program, while San Bernardino County provides its own training and resources.

Best Friends explains that kittens can be among the most vulnerable animals in shelters because they need intensive care that shelters may not have staff or resources to provide. Fostering fills that care gap, but the organization remains your source for case-specific directions. Do not substitute another program’s timetable, formula recipe, or medical protocol for the instructions you were given.

Prepare a safe, separate space

Set up a warm, draft-free indoor room or enclosed area that is easy to clean and away from household traffic. Kitten-proof it by removing small objects that could be swallowed, securing electrical hazards, moving toxic plants, and blocking gaps where a kitten could become trapped or hide beyond your reach. Prepare a secure carrier for transport; Best Friends instructs its foster caregivers to transport kittens in a carrier.

Ask the organization what it supplies before shopping. Best Friends says its Utah program provides needed items and lists examples such as kitten food or formula and bottle, a low-sided litter box, non-clumping litter, a safe heat source, bedding, a secure sleeping area, kitten-safe toys, and a scratching post. ASPCApro also publishes sample foster-care resources and checklists for programs to adapt.

If your organization asks you to track daily weight, check whether it provides a scale. Best Friends calls for daily weighing but does not specify a scale type, precision, or brand; a digital gram scale is one possible tool, not a universal requirement.

Keep foster kittens apart from resident pets as directed

Ask the coordinator how to manage separation, shared equipment, and any introduction to resident animals. In Best Friends’ Utah program, foster kittens are kept apart from household pets with their own supplies for at least two weeks before exposure. That is the policy of that program, not a universal quarantine period. Best Friends also recommends asking a veterinarian to check resident pets’ vaccination status and says pets should not be left unsupervised with foster kittens.

Follow the assigned feeding plan

Feeding needs change with age, health, and whether kittens are nursing from their mother, bottle-fed, or beginning to eat on their own. Follow the plan supplied for your litter and ask before changing the amount, frequency, formula, or food. Best Friends’ Utah manual describes bottle feeds every two to three hours for some very young kittens and beginning weaning around four weeks; those are examples from that program, not a schedule to apply automatically to every kitten.

If you are caring for bottle-fed kittens

Use the formula preparation, storage, warming, bottle-cleaning, and feeding-position instructions taught by your foster program. Best Friends instructs its caregivers to warm formula in hot water, check the temperature, ensure a kitten is warm before feeding, and feed with the kitten belly-down—not on its back or upright. It warns against feeding a chilled kitten. San Bernardino County’s kitten-care tutorial covers sanitized supplies, formula handling, safe warming, positioning, aspiration prevention, and body temperature; it says not to warm formula in a microwave or boiling water. Do not combine separate organizations’ recipes or protocols: use the method approved by your own coordinator.

Some bottle-fed kittens need help urinating and defecating. Best Friends describes stimulation after feeds and recording elimination; San Bernardino County discusses stimulation before and after each feeding. Ask your program to demonstrate the technique and follow its directions for your kitten.

As kittens begin eating independently

Ask the coordinator when and how to introduce food, what food to use, and how to monitor the transition. Best Friends’ Utah manual describes beginning weaning at around four weeks, but age and readiness vary. Keep recording what each kitten eats and report concerns rather than making abrupt changes to the plan.

Build a repeatable daily routine

The time commitment depends on the kittens’ age and condition. Bottle-fed babies may need care around the clock; older, independently eating kittens generally have a different schedule. Get a realistic schedule from the foster coordinator before accepting a litter, especially if you have work, school, travel, or other caregiving responsibilities.

Watch for illness and know when to call

A written log helps you notice changes rather than relying on memory. Best Friends lists frequent crying, restlessness, weakness, feeling cold, diarrhea, dehydration, shallow or labored breathing, and pale or blue color among signs of illness. These signs do not diagnose a cause; contact your foster organization for guidance and do not wait for a routine check-in when a kitten appears seriously unwell.

Best Friends tells its Utah foster caregivers to notify the foster department immediately for weight loss, a kitten cold to the touch, or breathing difficulty. Follow the escalation instructions and emergency contact supplied by your own organization. If you cannot reach the listed contact and the kitten is in immediate distress, seek urgent veterinary help while continuing to notify the program.

Use reliable training resources as supplements

Resources can help you understand the tasks, but they do not replace your kitten’s assigned plan. ASPCApro’s Feline Foster Care Guide and its foster-care tools and guidelines include materials such as a bottle-feeding guide, a weight-and-age chart, and sample protocols for foster programs to customize.

San Bernardino County Animal Care’s foster parent resources include kitten-care tutorials. Kitten Lady’s Orphan Kittens booklet covers age assessment, feeding, stimulation, veterinary needs, and caregiver self-care; its current resource page says more than 500 organizations in the United States and abroad have used the booklet as a foster-parent training tool since 2016. That is the publisher’s reported reach, not an independent evaluation of outcomes.
