No. Goldfish (Carassius auratus) are ordinarily freshwater fish, not marine fish. Although they can tolerate some elevated salinity under certain conditions, that does not mean a saltwater aquarium is suitable for them or that they can live safely with marine fish.
What the salinity evidence says
The U.S. Geological Survey’s goldfish species profile reports that adults do well in salinities from 0 to 6 parts per thousand (ppt). It also records goldfish collected at salinities as high as 17 ppt and summarizes studies reporting that they could not withstand long exposures above 15 ppt. These are observations about tolerance and exposure—not recommended aquarium conditions.

Life stage and exposure time matter. The USGS profile notes that eggs and fry tolerate less salinity than adults. A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2025 risk-screening summary likewise describes collection at up to 17 practical salinity units (PSU) and reports experimental survival at 15 PSU for only 9–11 days. A brief or limited survival result is not evidence of long-term suitability in marine water.
In short, a fish’s ability to endure some salt is not the same as being adapted to live in a saltwater aquarium. The available figures do not provide a safe salinity target or acclimation protocol for keeping goldfish in brackish or marine water.

Can goldfish live with saltwater fish?
Do not assume they can share a tank because goldfish have been found in water with elevated salinity. The CDC advises that “Most fish live in either saltwater or freshwater, not both,” and recommends matching fish to the aquarium type and checking species compatibility. Texas A&M’s veterinary guidance also identifies adult size, water requirements, and tolerance of other fish as factors to consider when selecting tankmates.
Compatibility involves more than short-term survival in similar water. Aquarium conditions and species-specific needs must suit all the fish in the tank. The sources cited here do not establish a goldfish-specific list of suitable marine tankmates or show that salinity adjustment makes goldfish appropriate for a marine aquarium.

Goldfish are omnivores; the USGS profile says their diet can include plant material and invertebrates as well as fish eggs and fry. That is a reason to be cautious about blanket tankmate claims, not a complete compatibility guide.
Does salt-bath research mean salt should be added to a goldfish tank?
No. A 2011 controlled clinical trial examined sodium chloride baths in goldfish, a treatment context distinct from routine aquarium housing. The existence of that study does not establish that salt should be added to a tank, nor does it demonstrate that goldfish are suited to brackish or marine water. Its available record does not provide enough information here to recommend a dose or treatment duration.

If you are considering a salt treatment for a sick fish or an unusual brackish setup, ask an aquatic veterinarian or qualified fish-health professional rather than improvising a salt regimen. The CDC also recommends veterinary guidance on aquarium setup and fish care.

Start with the fish’s normal water type rather than treating a tolerance observation as a care target. For goldfish, that means choosing a freshwater aquarium and checking the needs of each species before adding tankmates. The CDC’s fish-care guidance recommends learning aquarium maintenance needs, matching aquarium type to the fish, and researching which species can share a tank. Texas A&M’s fish-selection guidance likewise emphasizes size, water requirements, and compatibility.
