Are Small Fish Omnivores? What Their Diets Depend On

Small fish may be herbivores, carnivores, detritus feeders or omnivores. Species, life stage and available food—not size alone—determine what they eat.

No. Small fish are not automatically omnivores: “small” describes size, while omnivorous describes a diet that includes both plant and animal matter. A fish’s species, life stage and available food are better clues to what it eats.

What makes a fish an omnivore?

An omnivore eats both plant and animal matter. NOAA uses that definition in its explanation of aquatic food webs. For fish, the label describes a broad feeding preference, not a guarantee that every individual eats the same foods in the same proportions.

Fish diets are commonly grouped as herbivorous, omnivorous or carnivorous; some guidance also identifies detritus feeders separately. Herbivores favor plant material, carnivores prefer animal foods, and detritus feeders mainly consume dead organic matter and organisms associated with it. Omnivores take a mixture, which may include foods such as zooplankton, bottom-dwelling animals, detritus, phytoplankton, fruits or seeds, sometimes with a preference for particular items.

Why size alone does not tell you what a fish eats

Small fish include many species with different feeding habits. A fish’s size does not reveal whether its usual diet is plant-based, animal-based, mixed or focused on detritus. Habitat and the food available there also influence what it consumes. To describe or feed a fish accurately, identify its species rather than relying on a broad label such as “small fish.”

What do baby fish eat as they grow?

Diet can change as a fish develops. Many larvae and fry begin with tiny foods that fit their small mouths. FAO describes early fry eating microscopic algae and rotifers, then moving on to larger plankton, such as cladocerans and copepods, and insect larvae as mouth size increases. Their feeding preferences gradually come to resemble those of adults.

This is a general pattern, not a feeding schedule for every species. UF/IFAS notes that many newly hatched fish need live food because their mouth parts are so small. The appropriate food and timing depend on the species and its developmental stage.

Does eating plankton make a fish an omnivore?

Not necessarily. Plankton is a broad term for organisms drifting in the water, not one uniform type of food. NOAA distinguishes phytoplankton—microscopic, plant-like organisms—from zooplankton, which are animals and can include tiny organisms and early life stages of larger animals. Small animals may eat phytoplankton, and larger animals, including fish, may eat those small animals.

A fish that eats plankton may therefore be consuming plant-like organisms, animal organisms or both. The word “plankton” alone is not enough to classify its diet.

How to choose food for a small fish in captivity

Start with the fish’s identified species and life stage, then choose food suited to its natural feeding habits and mouth size. Prepared aquarium foods are one option, but no single flake, pellet or feeding amount is established as suitable for every small fish. Many newly hatched fish may need live food because prepared food is too large or otherwise unsuitable for their small mouths.

  • Confirm the species and whether the fish is a fry, juvenile or adult.
  • Check whether its diet is primarily plant-based, animal-based, detritus-based or mixed.
  • Choose food that the fish can physically eat and that matches its needs at that life stage.

UF/IFAS discusses prepared diets for ornamental fish and notes that many successfully reared ornamental fish are omnivores. That does not mean every ornamental fish—or every fish that happens to be small—has the same dietary requirements.
