They sleep through much of the day, become active at dusk and night, live alone, need a secure indoor habitat with a solid exercise wheel, require a protein-focused diet, and should have access to an exotic-mammal veterinarian. Ownership may also be restricted by local law. If your household can accommodate those conditions for many years, a hedgehog may be a rewarding companion; if you want a social, daytime animal or routine care that can be handled by any general pet clinic, another species is likely a better fit.
What makes a hedgehog a good—or poor—pet match?
The most important question is not whether hedgehogs are appealing. It is whether their schedule, solitary nature and specialized care fit your home. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) describes hedgehogs as suitable pets when they are well cared for, while the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine calls them fun, friendly and inquisitive. Those positive descriptions assume an owner who can meet their needs consistently.

| Consideration | A good match looks like | A poor match looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Time of activity | You can interact in the evening or at night and do not expect much daytime activity. | You want a pet that is awake and playful during school or work hours. |
| Social expectations | You are comfortable keeping one animal by itself. | You want to keep a pair or expect a hedgehog to need another hedgehog for company. |
| Daily care | You can provide a secure habitat, exercise, suitable food, cleaning and regular observation. | You need a pet that can be left without routine care or exercise. |
| Medical support | An exotic-mammal veterinarian is accessible and affordable for your household. | The nearest clinic treats only common companion animals or is difficult to reach. |
| Rules | You have confirmed that possession is legal at every relevant level of government. | You are relying on a seller’s assurance instead of checking current law. |
| Commitment | You can plan for several years of care, including possible emergency treatment. | Your housing, schedule or finances are likely to change soon. |
These are decision criteria, not personality guarantees. Individual hedgehogs differ, and a calm animal still remains nocturnal, solitary and dependent on specialized care.
Hedgehog behavior and daily rhythm
Nocturnal activity
Hedgehogs generally sleep during the day and are most active at dusk and night. WWF specifically notes that their peak activity occurs when many people are sleeping and recommends an exercise wheel in captivity. Plan feeding, observation and handling around the animal’s waking period rather than repeatedly disturbing it during daylight.
A household can make this work by placing the enclosure where nighttime movement is acceptable. A wheel can produce noise, and an active hedgehog may rearrange bedding or explore while the rest of the home is quiet. Someone who wants daytime cuddling every day may find the schedule frustrating.
Solitary housing
Hedgehogs are solitary. WWF warns that they may fight with other hedgehogs and should be housed alone. Do not acquire two animals on the assumption that they will keep each other company, and do not combine a hedgehog with another species. Separate housing is a basic welfare requirement, not an optional preference.
Can you hold a hedgehog?
Yes, a pet hedgehog can be held, but handling should be calm, predictable and timed for when the animal is awake. Give it time to wake before lifting, use both hands to support the body, and keep the session short if it curls up or appears stressed. Quills make abrupt handling uncomfortable for people and the animal, so avoid grabbing, squeezing or waking it by force. Wash your hands after handling, because WWF identifies zoonotic and public-health risks associated with hedgehogs.
What a hedgehog needs every day
Secure indoor habitat
Use an escape-resistant indoor enclosure with a hide or other sheltered resting area. The enclosure must allow the hedgehog to move, turn around, explore and exercise without access to hazards in the room. Select construction details and dimensions with an exotic-mammal veterinarian or a reputable veterinary care guide; requirements depend on the animal, enclosure design and local conditions.
Position the habitat in a stable part of the home, away from direct hazards and from places where nighttime activity will disturb people. Inspect doors, seams and accessories regularly. A hedgehog that slips out can hide in inaccessible spaces, so enclosure security is part of daily care.
Rank #2
Exercise wheel
A solid-surface exercise wheel is a central piece of equipment. WWF recommends a wheel in captivity because hedgehogs are active at night and need an outlet for exercise. Choose a wheel without openings that can trap feet or toes, and check it often for waste or damage. A wheel is not a substitute for a safe, appropriately sized habitat, but omitting one removes an important way for the animal to move.
Food and water
Diet guidance from WWF and the University of Florida centers on high-quality, low-fat protein. Insect-based foods or a formulated hedgehog or insectivore diet may be used, with the exact plan confirmed by an exotic-mammal veterinarian. The appropriate choice depends on the product, the hedgehog’s age and condition, and what else it receives.
Do not make a sudden diet change when bringing an animal home. Ask the rescue, breeder or veterinarian what it has been eating, then transition only with professional guidance. Monitor appetite, body condition and droppings as part of routine observation. Fresh water should be available, and bowls or bottles should be kept clean and functioning.
Cleaning and observation
Cleaning is not a one-time setup task. Remove soiled material regularly, wash food and water equipment, and follow a complete-cleaning routine appropriate to the enclosure and bedding. Observe the hedgehog whenever you provide care: note whether it is eating, drinking, moving normally and using the wheel. A change from its usual pattern is a reason to contact a veterinarian rather than wait for the problem to become obvious.
Do hedgehogs smell?
There is no universal “odor-free” answer. Smell is largely a husbandry issue: waste left in the enclosure, dirty equipment or spoiled food will create odors, while consistent cleaning reduces them. A sudden or unusually strong odor from the animal or habitat should not be dismissed as normal; it can accompany a health or sanitation problem and warrants veterinary advice.
Rank #3
Because hedgehogs are active at night and may soil the area around their wheel, owners should expect to clean more than just the sleeping hide. Choose an enclosure and flooring that can be cleaned thoroughly, and keep a supply of safe cleaning materials ready before the animal arrives.

Health, disease risk and veterinary care
Hedgehogs need a veterinarian who is comfortable treating exotic mammals. The University of Florida lists routine, emergency, nutrition and dental care among the services they may require. Identify a clinic before acquisition, ask whether it accepts new hedgehog patients, and find out where after-hours emergencies are handled.
WWF warns of zoonotic or public-health risks. Wash your hands after touching the hedgehog, its bedding, food dishes or enclosure, and supervise children so that hand-washing becomes automatic. Keep cleaning supplies and animal equipment separate from food-preparation areas. Anyone who is pregnant, very young, elderly or immunocompromised should ask a health professional about additional precautions.
Do not try to diagnose a hedgehog from internet descriptions. Reduced appetite, unusual lethargy, breathing changes, difficulty moving, persistent diarrhea, bleeding, a sudden change in droppings or any other marked departure from normal behavior should prompt a call to the exotic-mammal clinic. Emergency signs need urgent care, not a wait-and-see approach.
Are hedgehogs legal where you live?
Legality varies by city, county and state, and import or transport rules may add another layer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) identifies jurisdictions where hedgehog possession is prohibited. A rule can change, and a neighboring city or county may have different requirements.
Rank #4
- Check your state’s current wildlife, agriculture or animal-control rules.
- Check city and county ordinances for ownership, permits, zoning and prohibited species.
- Ask about import, transport and documentation requirements if the animal will cross a border.
- Keep written confirmation of the rules and any permit conditions before paying a seller or arranging transport.
Do not rely on an online advertisement, an old forum post or a seller’s statement that an animal is legal. If the law is unclear, contact the relevant government office and your local animal-control authority before acquiring a hedgehog.
How long do pet hedgehogs live?
Published guidance gives different figures, so plan for a multi-year commitment rather than a precise expiration date.
| Source | Published lifespan guidance | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| World Wildlife Fund Responsible Pet Guide | About 8–10 years in captivity | Use this as a long-term planning range. |
| University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine | Approximately 6 years or more with proper care | Treat six years as a minimum-style estimate, not a guarantee. |
The difference reflects variation among published care resources and among individual animals. Genetics, diet, veterinary care and living conditions all matter, but no source can promise a particular lifespan. Make arrangements for care during moves, travel, illness or changes in household income.

No universal purchase price, monthly budget or veterinary-cost figure is established in the available guidance. Expenses vary by jurisdiction, enclosure and equipment, food, routine examinations, emergency treatment and the animal’s medical needs.
Build a budget in categories instead of focusing only on the acquisition price:
Best Value
- Secure indoor enclosure, hide, bedding and cleaning supplies.
- Solid exercise wheel and replacement parts if equipment wears out.
- High-quality, low-fat protein food or insect-based diet.
- Initial examination, routine care, dental or nutrition consultations and emergency treatment.
- Transport to an exotic-mammal clinic and any permit or licensing fees required locally.
Ask the veterinarian for a fee schedule and an emergency plan. A pet that is inexpensive to acquire can still be expensive to keep healthy.
Questions to answer before you acquire one
- Can I accommodate a nocturnal animal? Decide where the enclosure will go and whether wheel noise or nighttime activity is acceptable.
- Am I comfortable with solitary housing? Plan for one hedgehog per enclosure.
- Can I provide specialized care? Confirm that you can manage habitat cleaning, exercise, diet and regular observation.
- Do I have veterinary access? Locate an exotic-mammal clinic and an after-hours option before bringing the animal home.
- Is ownership legal? Verify city, county, state and transport rules in writing.
- Can I commit for years? Use the six-years-or-more and eight-to-ten-year guidance as planning horizons rather than promises.
- Who will care for the animal if I travel or become ill? Identify a person who understands nocturnal activity and specialized handling.
A responsible path to bringing a hedgehog home
1. Verify the legal and veterinary basics first
Complete the legal checks and call an exotic-mammal veterinarian before searching for an animal. This prevents a situation in which you acquire a hedgehog and then discover that possession is restricted or medical care is unavailable.
2. Prepare the complete habitat
Set up the enclosure, hide, wheel, food and water equipment, bedding and cleaning supplies in advance. Test the enclosure for escape points and make sure every accessory is secure and washable.

Request its current diet, activity pattern, handling history and veterinary records. Use that information to plan a gradual transition and to recognize what is normal for that individual.
4. Consider rescue and adoption
The Hedgehog Welfare Society provides rescue contacts and approved-facility resources. Adoption can connect you with an animal whose temperament and care history are already documented, although you should still complete the same legal, habitat and veterinary checks.
5. Schedule a baseline examination
Arrange an initial visit with the exotic-mammal veterinarian and bring the written diet and care history. Follow the clinic’s recommendations for routine, dental, nutrition and emergency care.
Bottom line: are hedgehogs good pets?
Hedgehogs are good pets for prepared owners who want a solitary, nocturnal companion and can provide specialized housing, exercise, protein-focused nutrition, hygiene and exotic veterinary care. They are not a good choice for households seeking a daytime, highly social animal, or for anyone who has not confirmed local legality. Make the decision only after checking the law, securing veterinary support and planning for many years of care.
