Yes. Hydrangeas are toxic to dogs. The plant contains cyanogenic glycosides, compounds that can release cyanide when the plant is chewed or damaged. Most reported hydrangea exposures cause stomach upset—such as vomiting or diarrhea—rather than severe cyanide poisoning, but a large or heavily chewed ingestion can be more serious.

If your dog has eaten hydrangea, remove access to the plant and call your veterinarian or a pet poison-control service for advice. Do not wait for symptoms or try to make your dog vomit unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

Which parts of a hydrangea are poisonous?

  • Flowers and flower heads

  • Small shoots and other plant material

The color of the flowers does not make a hydrangea safer. Blue, pink, purple, and white blooms can all come from hydrangeas containing cyanide-producing compounds. Flower color mainly reflects the cultivar and growing conditions, so it should not be used to judge toxicity.

What happens if a dog eats hydrangea?

The usual signs are gastrointestinal or nonspecific illness. Watch for:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Drooling
  • Depression or unusual quietness
  • Lethargy
  • Reduced appetite

Severe cyanide poisoning is considered uncommon after typical hydrangea exposure in dogs, but it is possible. A dog that ate a substantial amount, chewed the plant thoroughly, or is small, young, elderly, or medically fragile may face greater risk.

Go to an emergency veterinary hospital immediately if your dog has difficulty breathing, gasps, becomes severely weak, collapses, trembles, has seizures, or loses consciousness. These signs are emergencies regardless of whether you are certain hydrangea was the cause.

What to do if your dog ate hydrangea

  1. Move your dog away from the plant. Check the mouth and remove accessible plant pieces without putting yourself at risk of being bitten.
  2. Identify the exposure. Note the type of hydrangea if known, which parts were eaten, how much may be missing, and when it happened.
  3. Take evidence with you. Photograph the plant or place a sample in a bag for identification. Do not delay an emergency trip to collect it.
  4. Call for professional advice promptly. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency clinic, or an animal poison-control service even if your dog looks normal.
  5. Follow the instructions you receive. The appropriate response depends on your dog’s weight, health, the amount eaten, how long ago it happened, and whether symptoms are present.

In the United States, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center can be reached 24 hours a day at (888) 426-4435; a consultation fee may apply. Pet Poison Helpline is available at (855) 764-7661. If your dog is having trouble breathing, collapsing, or seizing, go directly to an emergency veterinary hospital while calling ahead if possible.

Should you make your dog vomit?

No—not unless a veterinarian or veterinary poison-control professional specifically instructs you to. Inducing vomiting can be dangerous if your dog is already showing symptoms, has trouble swallowing or breathing, is at risk of aspiration, or has another condition that makes vomiting unsafe. It can also cause additional injury if done incorrectly.

Do not give salt, mustard, oil, syrup of ipecac, or other home remedies. Hydrogen peroxide should not be treated as an automatic solution; a professional must decide whether vomiting is appropriate for this particular dog and exposure.

How do veterinarians treat hydrangea poisoning?

There is no safe home treatment that neutralizes a potentially cyanide-producing plant. A veterinarian will assess the dog and decide whether decontamination is appropriate. Care may include:

  • Monitoring for worsening gastrointestinal or neurological signs
  • Medications to control vomiting
  • Fluids and other supportive care
  • Additional treatment for breathing problems, collapse, seizures, or suspected cyanide toxicity

Serious cyanide-related illness requires urgent veterinary management. The treatment plan depends on the actual exposure and the dog’s condition, not simply on the fact that a hydrangea was present.

How to prevent another exposure

Fence off outdoor hydrangeas or remove them from areas where your dog regularly explores. Pick up pruned stems and fallen leaves rather than leaving them in the yard. Indoors, keep cut hydrangeas and dropped flowers out of reach, and supervise dogs that chew ornamental plants.

Hydrangea poisoning: common mistakes

Claim What is safer to assume
“Hydrangeas are safe because severe poisoning is rare.” They are listed as toxic to dogs, even though many exposures result mainly in gastrointestinal upset.
“Only the leaves or flowers are dangerous.” All parts of the plant may contain cyanide-producing compounds.
“My dog has no symptoms, so nothing happened.” Call for advice because severity depends on the amount, timing, plant part, and degree of chewing.
“I should give hydrogen peroxide immediately.” Only induce vomiting when directed for this specific exposure by a veterinary professional.

Remove access to the plant, record how much was eaten and when, photograph or save a sample for identification, and call your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. Do not induce vomiting unless a professional specifically tells you to.

When is hydrangea poisoning an emergency?

Seek emergency veterinary care for difficulty breathing, gasping, severe weakness, collapse, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Contact a veterinarian promptly even for a dog that appears well, because risk depends on the amount eaten and other details of the exposure.

The Bottom Line

Hydrangeas are poisonous to dogs, although most exposures result in gastrointestinal upset rather than severe cyanide poisoning. Every part of the plant—including leaves, stems, and flowers—should be considered unsafe. If your dog eats hydrangea, call your veterinarian or pet poison control promptly, and never induce vomiting or give a home remedy without professional instructions.
