No. Lumpsuckers are marine fish, not freshwater fish. Fisheries and Oceans Canada says Atlantic lumpfish are found on both sides of the Atlantic. “Lumpsucker” can also refer to other species, including the Pacific spiny lumpsucker, which lives in North Pacific ocean waters.

What does “lumpsucker” mean?

“Lumpsucker” is a common name used for fish in the lumpsucker family; it does not identify only one species. Fisheries and Oceans Canada uses the name for Atlantic lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus), while the Aquarium of the Pacific identifies the Pacific spiny lumpsucker as Eumicrotremus orbis. Both are marine fish.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s lumpfish profile describes Atlantic lumpfish as marine fish on both sides of the Atlantic. The Aquarium of the Pacific’s Pacific spiny lumpsucker profile concerns a different species found in the North Pacific.

Where does Atlantic lumpfish live?

Atlantic lumpfish prefer cold water and are commonly found near the ocean bottom, often around hard, rocky areas with vegetation, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. But “near the bottom” does not mean they remain on the seabed throughout their lives.

Habitat changes with life stage and season

COSEWIC’s 2017 assessment of Cyclopterus lumpus describes females laying eggs in inshore nests among rocks and crevices, with males guarding the eggs. Young-of-the-year fish occur near the surface, often attached to or beneath floating seaweed. Adults use both pelagic (open-water) and demersal (near-bottom) habitat; they spend more time near the bottom in winter.

These details apply to Atlantic lumpfish, not automatically to every species called a lumpsucker. The assessment describes the species’ Canadian range and life history; it does not establish a freshwater habitat for lumpsuckers.

Is the Atlantic lumpfish population declining?

COSEWIC’s 2017 assessment reported that bottom-trawl surveys over 19–20 years indicated an abundance decline of about 58% in the core Canadian range off southern Newfoundland. The same assessment said abundance appeared stable in some other parts of the Canadian range, including the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. This is a geographically limited historical finding, not a current global population estimate.

Can you keep a lumpsucker in a freshwater aquarium?

No. Because lumpsuckers are marine fish, a freshwater aquarium is not suitable. The sources cited here establish their marine habitat; they do not provide husbandry guidance or assess the requirements for keeping any species in captivity.
