Dried Indian almond (catappa) leaves are the simplest starting choice for aquarium leaf litter when you want tannins and a natural, tea-colored look. Oak is a durable alternative if you can identify and collect it safely; beech is described as milder. There is no established universal “best” leaf: choose for your fish, water conditions and the look or function you want, then monitor the tank.

Which leaves are suitable for an aquarium?

Common choices include catappa, oak and beech, with mulberry, magnolia and guava also used. Their practical differences are described in aquarium-keeping guidance, not established by controlled comparisons of species.

Leaf Practical characteristics Best fit
Indian almond (catappa) A widely sold, dried aquarium leaf and a direct option for adding tannins. No controlled comparison establishes its tannin output against other leaves. Keepers who want a named aquarium product or a straightforward starting choice.
Oak Described by an aquarium guide as tannin-rich, tough and long-lasting. Keepers seeking durable leaf litter who can confidently identify clean, untreated oak.
Beech Described by the same guide as milder than oak. Keepers looking for a less pronounced option.
Mulberry, magnolia and guava The guide lists these as alternatives; some dense leaves are described as slower to decay and some are readily grazed. It does not provide a controlled species-by-species ranking. Keepers considering other correctly identified, uncontaminated leaves.

These are qualitative husbandry comparisons, not a safety or effectiveness ranking. No reliable head-to-head statistic ranks aquarium leaf species by benefit, safety or performance. [Aquarium guide]

How to choose for your tank

  • For tannins and tint: Catappa and oak are practical choices, but available sources do not establish which produces more tannins or a particular water color.
  • For leaf persistence: Oak is described as tough and lasting; beech as milder. These are guide-level observations, not controlled decay-rate measurements.
  • For sourcing: Packaged catappa leaves offer a named aquarium product. Locally collected oak or beech may be an option in some regions, but only if you can identify the tree and rule out spray or pollution exposure.
  • For water chemistry: Consider the requirements of your fish and invertebrates. Do not assume a leaf will shift pH by a predictable or safe amount; check pH and other relevant water parameters.

How much should you add?

Dose by the specific product’s directions and leaf size, not by treating all leaves as equivalent. sera’s product instructions call for one small leaf per 30 litres, one medium leaf per 60 litres, or one XXL leaf per 100 litres. sera says its leaves sink within 24–48 hours and release active substances over 2–3 weeks. These figures describe sera Catappa Leaves, not a universal dose or release period for loose leaves and other products. [sera Catappa Leaves]

A separate aquarium guide suggests roughly one large catappa leaf measuring 12–15 cm per 15–20 litres, or a handful of oak leaves per 50 litres. The differing advice illustrates why leaf size and product matter; add conservatively and monitor tank conditions rather than combining the rules. [Aquarium guide]

If you prefer packaged leaves to collecting and preparing your own, sera sells dried Catappa Leaves in multiple sizes. Use the directions for the particular product you buy. [sera Catappa Leaves]

How to use leaves safely

  1. Identify the species. Do not add unidentified leaves. An aquarium guide warns against conifers and names oleander, yew, cherry laurel and box as potentially harmful. It also advises against walnut and soft leaves that break down quickly. The list is not an exhaustive toxicology reference. [Aquarium guide]
  2. Check where they came from. Avoid leaves from sprayed or polluted areas. If you cannot verify the source is clean, choose a packaged aquarium product instead.
  3. Start conservatively. Follow the relevant product directions or use a small amount of a safely identified leaf, accounting for size. Observe the tank rather than assuming another leaf type’s dose applies.
  4. Monitor water quality. Check pH and other parameters that matter for your aquarium. Tea-colored water is not evidence that ammonia or nitrate is safe; test water quality directly. [Aquarium guide]
  5. Remove deteriorating material as needed. Leaves break down at different rates; do not assume every species will remain intact for the same length of time.

What leaf tannins can—and cannot—tell you

Leaf litter can add tannins and tint the water, but the color alone does not establish that the water is safe or that the aquarium’s chemistry suits its inhabitants. Measure the relevant parameters instead of judging by appearance.

sera says its catappa product has mild antibacterial and antifungal effects and supports natural behavior and spawning. Those are manufacturer claims, not proof that the leaves prevent or cure disease in a home aquarium. [sera Catappa Leaves]

SEAFDEC/AQD reports that Terminalia catappa leaves contain tannins and other compounds and discusses aquaculture findings. Results from aquaculture settings or leaf extracts do not automatically demonstrate a clinical benefit for ornamental fish in a home tank. [SEAFDEC/AQD]

A 2023 review also discusses proposed antimicrobial and fish-growth benefits, but it summarizes earlier studies. Those claims need to be judged against the original study’s species, dose, design and outcome; they are not a substitute for diagnosing illness and using appropriate treatment.
