No. The mandarinfish most commonly meant in aquarium discussions, Synchiropus splendidus, is a marine reef fish—not a freshwater fish. It needs a marine aquarium environment, so it is not suitable for a freshwater tank.
Which fish does “mandarin fish” mean?
Common names can refer to different fish. This answer is about the colorful reef species Synchiropus splendidus, also called the blue or green mandarin, mandarin dragonet, striped mandarin, and mandarin goby. What kind of water does a mandarinfish live in?
Synchiropus splendidus lives in tropical Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Aquarium of the Pacific describes it as generally staying on or near the reef substrate, at depths of 1–18 m (3–59 ft); FishBase independently classifies it as marine and reef-associated. Aquarium of the Pacific lists parts of the Coral Triangle, Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef in its distribution; Georgia Aquarium describes its range in the Western Pacific from the Philippine Islands to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Aquarium of the Pacific species account, last updated May 20, 2026, reports a body length of 6–9 cm (2.4–3.5 in). It describes the fish as “Mandarin gobies are found in coral reefs, generally on the substrate at depths from 1—18 meters (3—59 feet).”

Can a mandarin fish live in a freshwater tank?
No. A freshwater tank does not provide the marine conditions of the fish’s natural reef habitat. Do not put one in freshwater or try to convert its care to a freshwater setup; the species is marine, not a freshwater-adapted fish.

Food supply is an important consideration. Aqua Group says the species eats tiny prey such as copepods and other microcrustaceans, and recommends a mature reef aquarium with abundant copepods. Its care page also notes that acceptance of prepared foods should not be assumed, even for captive-bred or well-conditioned specimens. Treat this as retailer care guidance, not a guarantee for every fish or a complete husbandry protocol.

- Confirm the fish’s identity as Synchiropus splendidus rather than relying on a common name alone.
- Plan for an appropriate marine reef environment and an adequate supply of suitable tiny prey.
- Ask a qualified marine-aquarium professional whether your established tank can meet the needs of a particular fish; food supplements alone do not make an unsuitable aquarium appropriate.
Aquarium of the Pacific notes that the species is popular in the aquarium trade, but says the long-term impact of procuring it is unknown. That does not establish a particular sourcing claim as settled.
