Are Marrow Bones Safe for Dogs? What One Jaw-Entrapment Case Shows

An ASPCA case report describes Dottie, whose lower jaw was trapped by a beef marrow-bone ring. Here is what happened, why bones can injure dogs and how to evaluate chew-related risks.

Marrow bones can injure dogs in more than one way. In an ASPCA case report, a three-inch beef marrow-bone ring became locked behind a three-year-old dog’s canine teeth, trapping her lower jaw until veterinarians anesthetized her and cut the ring apart. The ASPCA’s stated position in that report is that bones should generally be avoided.

The case is a warning, not a population study or a product-safety ranking. It shows how a dog can get into trouble after licking out the marrow, and why any chew should be chosen around that individual dog’s chewing style, swallowing habits and ability to break off pieces.

What happened to Dottie

Late one night in June, David B. Hernandez noticed Dottie, his three-year-old Labrador/shepherd mix, pawing at her face. A circular remnant of a beef marrow bone was caught around her lower jaw, behind her canine teeth. The ASPCA report describes the ring as about three inches across; Dottie had already licked out the marrow.

Hernandez tried to remove the bone but became concerned that forcing it could break Dottie’s teeth or worsen her distress. He took her to the ASPCA Animal Hospital in Manhattan the following morning. The account presents the size mismatch as part of what happened: he had bought the bone even though the store did not have the right size for his dog. It does not establish a universal sizing formula or a guaranteed safe dimension for every dog.

How the hospital removed the ring

ASPCA veterinarian Dr. Maren Krafchik, assisted by senior veterinary technician Michaelene Albert, anesthetized Dottie. Krafchik passed flexible Gigli wire inside the bone ring and worked it back and forth until the bone split into two pieces. The report says the procedure took less than a minute once they began.

Dottie recovered with slight bruising and swollen lips. The report does not describe a broken tooth, airway injury or intestinal perforation in her case. Her recovery should not be read as evidence that similar entrapments will be minor; the outcome depends on the dog, the object and how long the problem persists.

Why a marrow bone can be hazardous

The ring around Dottie’s jaw is an unusual-looking problem, but it illustrates several hazards the ASPCA associates with bones. Dr. Camille DeClementi, vice president of the ASPCA Animal Hospital, said, “In general, we think bones should be avoided,” and explained: “They can break teeth, get lodged in the throat and obstruct the airway, and cause digestive irritation, obstruction or perforation.”

Jaw entrapment

A dog can lick the soft marrow from the center of a ring-shaped bone and leave a hard loop. If the lower jaw passes through the opening and the ring catches behind the canine teeth, the dog may be unable to pull free. Pawing at the face, repeated attempts to dislodge the object, lip swelling or visible panic are signs that something is wrong, although they do not identify the cause by themselves.

In Dottie’s case, the ring was not removed by pulling. A veterinarian used anesthesia and a cutting technique designed to divide the bone while protecting the mouth. That is a clinical procedure, not a general home-removal method.

Broken teeth

Hard bones can exceed the strength of a dog’s teeth. A fracture may be obvious, or it may leave a painful tooth that is difficult for an owner to see. Trying to pry a tightly lodged object away can add force to already stressed teeth. The case report explains why Dottie’s owner stopped attempting removal when he feared dental damage.

Throat and airway obstruction

Bone fragments or a whole piece can lodge in the throat. A lodged object can interfere with swallowing and, if it blocks the airway, become immediately life-threatening. The ASPCA statement names airway obstruction as one of the reasons it advises against bones.

Digestive irritation, obstruction and perforation

Pieces that are swallowed can irritate the digestive tract. Larger or sharp fragments may obstruct the intestine or perforate it. DeClementi also warns that such complications can require “immediate life-saving veterinary intervention.” The report does not give an injury rate, a typical time to symptoms or a list of home treatments.

What the ASPCA advice means for chew decisions

The ASPCA report does not certify a particular replacement chew. Instead, it puts the emphasis on the dog in front of you. DeClementi advises owners to understand their dog’s chewing habits and preferences, then avoid items that the dog can consume in large pieces or too quickly.

Consumption should be controlled by the dog’s behavior

DeClementi’s concise rule is: “Consumption of chews should be slow and deliberate.” Her longer guidance is: “When selecting appropriate chews, avoid products that dogs can consume in significant pieces, or with inappropriate rapidity, which can lead to intestinal obstruction or perforation and require immediate life-saving veterinary intervention.”

That advice rules out a one-size-fits-all answer. A chew that remains intact for one dog may be shredded and swallowed by another. A product that a careful gnawer works on gradually may be consumed rapidly by a dog that bites off chunks. The source supplies behavioral criteria, not a universal material, shape or brand that is risk-free.

Questions to ask before offering any chew

  • Does this dog tend to gnaw patiently, or gulp and swallow?
  • Can the dog break off pieces large enough to create a choking or intestinal-obstruction hazard?
  • Does the item become small, sharp or loose as it is worked?
  • Will the dog guard it, panic over it or try to finish it rapidly?
  • Can an adult watch the dog continuously while it is being used?

These questions apply the ASPCA’s guidance; they are not a product test or a guarantee of safety.

What to do if a bone is stuck or your dog becomes ill

The Dottie account is not a general first-aid protocol. It does, however, show why a suspected entrapment or swallowed fragment should be treated as a veterinary problem rather than a contest of strength.

If a ring is caught around the jaw

Stop tugging if the object is tightly lodged, and avoid actions that could force it against the teeth or soft tissues. Keep the dog as calm as possible and contact a veterinary hospital promptly. If breathing is impaired, the dog is turning blue or gray, collapsing, or showing severe distress, treat it as an airway emergency and seek immediate emergency veterinary care. Do not assume that because the dog is still standing the object is harmless.

At the ASPCA hospital, Dottie’s ring was divided under anesthesia with Gigli wire. The report gives no instruction for duplicating that technique at home, and owners should not attempt to cut, pry or drill a bone around a dog’s mouth.

If pieces were swallowed

Tell the veterinarian what was swallowed, when it happened and whether the material was a whole ring, a large chunk or small fragments. Watch for vomiting, repeated retching, abdominal pain, marked lethargy, refusal to eat, difficulty passing stool or other sudden changes, and obtain veterinary advice rather than waiting for a suspected obstruction to resolve on its own. The ASPCA report identifies obstruction and perforation as complications but does not set a safe waiting period.

If breathing or swallowing is affected

Difficulty breathing, choking sounds, inability to swallow, excessive drooling or collapse requires urgent veterinary attention. Do not push food, water or another chew toward a lodged object. A veterinarian must determine whether the problem is in the mouth, throat or farther down the digestive tract.

How to supervise a chew safely

Supervision cannot remove every hazard, but it can help you notice the behaviors that DeClementi identifies as dangerous.

  1. Inspect the item first. Look for cracks, sharp edges, loose sections or an opening through which the lower jaw could pass and become trapped.
  2. Watch the first session from start to finish. Note whether your dog gnaws slowly, strips off substantial pieces or tries to swallow the item whole.
  3. Take it away if the pattern changes. Rapid consumption, repeated gulping, aggressive breaking or visible distress are reasons to stop the session and consult your veterinarian about alternatives suited to that dog.
  4. Recheck the item during use. A chew that was initially too large to swallow may become a small, irregular remnant. Remove remnants before they can be gulped.
  5. Keep chews separate from competition. Other pets, children or guarding behavior can make a dog rush, increasing the chance of swallowing pieces quickly.

This checklist is a practical application of the ASPCA’s slow-consumption and significant-piece warnings. It is not a certification that any chew is safe for every dog.

What this single case proves—and what it does not

What it demonstrates

  • A ring-shaped beef marrow bone can become trapped behind a dog’s canine teeth after the marrow is removed.
  • Veterinary removal may require anesthesia and a tool to divide the bone rather than pulling it free.
  • A dog may recover well after prompt professional treatment; Dottie had slight bruising and swollen lips after her procedure.
  • ASPCA hospital leadership links bones with dental fractures, airway obstruction and digestive injury, and recommends generally avoiding them.

What remains unknown

  • The ASPCA report, published August 24, 2017, is one incident account, not an estimate of how often jaw entrapment occurs.
  • It does not compare raw, cooked or commercially prepared marrow bones, establish a safe diameter, or rate alternative chews.
  • It does not prove that every dog offered a marrow bone will be injured, nor that another type of chew is risk-free.
  • It does not provide population statistics, controlled testing or a formal product-safety standard.

Those limits matter. The case is strong evidence that the described mechanism can happen and that the named ASPCA clinicians consider bones broadly hazardous. It cannot support a numerical probability or a blanket claim about every chew on the market.

A practical decision framework for dog owners

Before buying

Consider whether the object has a hard ring, a hollow center or a shape that could fit over the lower jaw. Match the decision to your dog’s actual behavior, not to the label or to how another dog uses the same item. If your dog is a fast, powerful or fragment-swallowing chewer, the ASPCA guidance weighs against giving a bone.

During use

Stay close enough to intervene by removing the dog from the situation and calling a veterinarian, rather than leaving the chew unattended. A dog that is suddenly pawing at its face, drooling, gagging, repeatedly dropping the chew or trying to swallow large pieces needs the session stopped and the problem assessed.

After use

Discard remnants and record any unusual behavior, vomiting, mouth pain or change in appetite. If symptoms appear after a chew, tell your veterinarian exactly what the item was and how much may have been swallowed. Do not use a previous uneventful session as proof that the next one will be safe.

The bottom line on marrow bones

Dottie’s experience turns an abstract warning into a specific mechanism: after she licked out the marrow, the remaining three-inch ring locked around her lower jaw. ASPCA clinicians freed her by anesthetizing her and breaking the ring with Gigli wire, but their broader advice is to avoid bones because they can damage teeth, obstruct the airway and injure the digestive tract. For any chew, judge the individual dog’s habits, prevent rapid swallowing and large-piece consumption, and seek veterinary help when an object is lodged or illness follows.
